Book Synopsis Variational Methods in Nonlinear Elasticity by : Pablo Pedregal
Download or read book Variational Methods in Nonlinear Elasticity written by Pablo Pedregal and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In less than 100 pages, this book covers the main vector variational methods developed to solve nonlinear elasticity problems. Presenting a general framework with a tight focus, the author provides a comprehensive exposition of a technically difficult, yet rapidly developing area of modern applied mathematics. The book includes the classical existence theory as well as a brief incursion into problems where nonexistence is fundamental. It also provides self-contained, concise accounts of quasi convexity, polyconvexity, and rank-one convexity, which are used in nonlinear elasticity. Pedregal introduces the reader to Young measures as an important tool in solving vector variational techniques. Readers are encouraged to pursue nonlinear elasticity as one of the best means to apply these techniques. Although there are other books devoted to nonlinear elasticity or variational methods, none are concerned with Young measures as a tool for proving existence results in nonlinear elasticity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scientists of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, led by Jas. Bernoulli and Euler, created a coherent theory of the mechanics of strings and rods undergoing planar deformations. They introduced the basic con cepts of strain, both extensional and flexural, of contact force with its com ponents of tension and shear force, and of contact couple. They extended Newton's Law of Motion for a mass point to a law valid for any deformable body. Euler formulated its independent and much subtler complement, the Angular Momentum Principle. (Euler also gave effective variational characterizations of the governing equations. ) These scientists breathed life into the theory by proposing, formulating, and solving the problems of the suspension bridge, the catenary, the velaria, the elastica, and the small transverse vibrations of an elastic string. (The level of difficulty of some of these problems is such that even today their descriptions are sel dom vouchsafed to undergraduates. The realization that such profound and beautiful results could be deduced by mathematical reasoning from fundamental physical principles furnished a significant contribution to the intellectual climate of the Age of Reason. ) At first, those who solved these problems did not distinguish between linear and nonlinear equations, and so were not intimidated by the latter. By the middle of the nineteenth century, Cauchy had constructed the basic framework of three-dimensional continuum mechanics on the founda tions built by his eighteenth-century predecessors.

Download or read book Variational Methods in the Mechanics of Solids written by S. Nemat-Nasser and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-01-31 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Variational Methods in the Mechanics of Solids contains the proceedings of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics Symposium on Variational Methods in the Mechanics of Solids, held at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, on September 11-13, 1978. The papers focus on advances in the application of variational methods to a variety of mathematically and technically significant problems in solid mechanics. The discussions are organized around three themes: thermomechanical behavior of composites, elastic and inelastic boundary value problems, and elastic and inelastic dynamic problems. This book is comprised of 58 chapters and opens by addressing some questions of asymptotic expansions connected with composite and with perforated materials. The following chapters explore mathematical and computational methods in plasticity; variational irreversible thermodynamics of open physical-chemical continua; macroscopic behavior of elastic material with periodically spaced rigid inclusions; and application of the Lanczos method to structural vibration. Finite deformation of elastic beams and complementary theorems of solid mechanics are also considered, along with numerical contact elastostatics; periodic solutions in plasticity and viscoplasticity; and the convergence of the mixed finite element method in linear elasticity. This monograph will appeal to practitioners of mathematicians as well as theoretical and applied mechanics.

This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reflects a significant part of authors' research activity dur ing the last ten years. The present monograph is constructed on the results obtained by the authors through their direct cooperation or due to the authors separately or in cooperation with other mathematicians. All these results fit in a unitary scheme giving the structure of this work. The book is mainly addressed to researchers and scholars in Pure and Applied Mathematics, Mechanics, Physics and Engineering. We are greatly indebted to Viorica Venera Motreanu for the careful reading of the manuscript and helpful comments on important issues. We are also grateful to our Editors of Kluwer Academic Publishers for their professional assistance. Our deepest thanks go to our numerous scientific collaborators and friends, whose work was so important for us. D. Motreanu and V. Radulescu IX Introduction The present monograph is based on original results obtained by the authors in the last decade. This book provides a comprehensive expo sition of some modern topics in nonlinear analysis with applications to the study of several classes of boundary value problems. Our framework includes multivalued elliptic problems with discontinuities, variational inequalities, hemivariational inequalities and evolution problems. The treatment relies on variational methods, monotonicity principles, topo logical arguments and optimization techniques. Excepting Sections 1 and 3 in Chapter 1 and Sections 1 and 3 in Chapter 2, the material is new in comparison with any other book, representing research topics where the authors contributed. The outline of our work is the following.
Book Synopsis Contact Problems in Elasticity by : N. Kikuchi
Download or read book Contact Problems in Elasticity written by N. Kikuchi and published by SIAM. This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contact of one deformable body with another lies at the heart of almost every mechanical structure. Here, in a comprehensive treatment, two of the field's leading researchers present a systematic approach to contact problems. Using variational formulations, Kikuchi and Oden derive a multitude of new results, both for classical problems and for nonlinear problems involving large deflections and buckling of thin plates with unilateral supports, dry friction with nonclassical laws, large elastic and elastoplastic deformations with frictional contact, dynamic contacts with dynamic frictional effects, and rolling contacts. This method exposes properties of solutions obscured by classical methods, and it provides a basis for the development of powerful numerical schemes. Among the novel results presented here are algorithms for contact problems with nonlinear and nonlocal friction, and very effective algorithms for solving problems involving the large elastic deformation of hyperelastic bodies with general contact conditions. Includes detailed discussion of numerical methods for nonlinear materials with unilateral contact and friction, with examples of metalforming simulations. Also presents algorithms for the finite deformation rolling contact problem, along with a discussion of numerical examples.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Variational Methods for Nonlinear Geometric Data by : Philipp Grohs
Download or read book Handbook of Variational Methods for Nonlinear Geometric Data written by Philipp Grohs and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-03 with total page 701 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers different, current research directions in the context of variational methods for non-linear geometric data. Each chapter is authored by leading experts in the respective discipline and provides an introduction, an overview and a description of the current state of the art. Non-linear geometric data arises in various applications in science and engineering. Examples of nonlinear data spaces are diverse and include, for instance, nonlinear spaces of matrices, spaces of curves, shapes as well as manifolds of probability measures. Applications can be found in biology, medicine, product engineering, geography and computer vision for instance. Variational methods on the other hand have evolved to being amongst the most powerful tools for applied mathematics. They involve techniques from various branches of mathematics such as statistics, modeling, optimization, numerical mathematics and analysis. The vast majority of research on variational methods, however, is focused on data in linear spaces. Variational methods for non-linear data is currently an emerging research topic. As a result, and since such methods involve various branches of mathematics, there is a plethora of different, recent approaches dealing with different aspects of variational methods for nonlinear geometric data. Research results are rather scattered and appear in journals of different mathematical communities. The main purpose of the book is to account for that by providing, for the first time, a comprehensive collection of different research directions and existing approaches in this context. It is organized in a way that leading researchers from the different fields provide an introductory overview of recent research directions in their respective discipline. As such, the book is a unique reference work for both newcomers in the field of variational methods for non-linear geometric data, as well as for established experts that aim at to exploit new research directions or collaborations. Chapter 9 of this book is available open access under a CC BY 4.0 license at link.springer.com.

Download or read book Solid Mechanics written by Clive L. Dym and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-05 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid Mechanics: A Variational Approach, Augmented Edition presents a lucid and thoroughly developed approach to solid mechanics for students engaged in the study of elastic structures not seen in other texts currently on the market. This work offers a clear and carefully prepared exposition of variational techniques as they are applied to solid mechanics. Unlike other books in this field, Dym and Shames treat all the necessary theory needed for the study of solid mechanics and include extensive applications. Of particular note is the variational approach used in developing consistent structural theories and in obtaining exact and approximate solutions for many problems. Based on both semester and year-long courses taught to undergraduate seniors and graduate students, this text is geared for programs in aeronautical, civil, and mechanical engineering, and in engineering science. The authors’ objective is two-fold: first, to introduce the student to the theory of structures (one- and two-dimensional) as developed from the three-dimensional theory of elasticity; and second, to introduce the student to the strength and utility of variational principles and methods, including briefly making the connection to finite element methods. A complete set of homework problems is included.

Book Synopsis Mechanical Behaviour of Materials by : Dominique François
Download or read book Mechanical Behaviour of Materials written by Dominique François and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-14 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in technology are demanding ever-increasing mastery over the materials being used: the challenge is to gain a better understanding of their behaviour, and more particularly of the relations between their microstructure and their macroscopic properties. This work, of which this is the first volume, aims to provide the means by which this challenge may be met. Starting from the mechanics of deformation, it develops the laws governing macroscopic behaviour – expressed as the constitutive equations – always taking account of the physical phenomena which underlie rheological behaviour. The most recent developments are presented, in particular those concerning heterogeneous materials such as metallic alloys, polymers and composites. Each chapter is devoted to one of the major classes of material behaviour. As the subtitles indicate, Volume 1 deals with micro- and macroscopic constitutive behaviour and Volume 2 with damage and fracture mechanics. A third volume will be devoted to exercises and their full solutions complementing the content of these two first volumes. Most of the chapters end with a set of exercises, to many of which either the full solution or hints on how to obtain this are given; each volume is profusely illustrated with explanatory diagrams and with electron-microscope photographs. This book, now in its second edition, has been rigorously re-written, updated and modernised for a new generation. The authors improved the existing material, in particular in modifying the organisation, and added new up-to-date content. Understanding the subject matter requires a good knowledge of solid mechanics and materials science; the main elements of these fields are given in a set of annexes at the end of the first volume. The authors also thought it interesting for the readers to give as footnotes some information about the many scientists whose names are attached to theories and formulae and whose memories must be celebrated. Whilst the present book, as well as Volume 2, is addressed primarily to graduate students, part of it can be used in undergraduate courses; and it is hoped that practising engineers and scientists will find the information it conveys useful. It is the authors’ hope also that English-speaking readers will want to learn about the aspects of French culture, and more particularly of the French school of micromechanics of materials, which this treatment undoubtedly displays.
Book Synopsis Biomedical Image Registration by : Bernd Fischer
Download or read book Biomedical Image Registration written by Bernd Fischer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-07-05 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to the proceedings of the 4th Workshop on Biomedical Image R- istration (WBIR). Previous WBIRs took place in Bled, Slovenia (1999), at the UniversityofPennsylvania,USA(2003)andinUtrecht,TheNetherlands(2006). This year, WBIR was hosted by the Institute Mathematics and Image Proce- ing and the Fraunhofer Project Group on Image Registration and it was held in Lub ̈ eck, Germany. It provided the opportunity to bring together researchers from all over the world to discuss some of the most recent advances in image registration and its applications. We had an excellent collection of papers that were reviewed by at least three reviewers each from a 35-member Program Committee assembled from a wor- wide community of registration experts. This year 17 papers were accepted for oral presentation, while another 7 papers were accepted as poster papers. We believe all of the conference papers were of excellent quality. Registration is a fundamental task in image processing used to match two or more pictures taken, for example, at di?erent times, from di?erent sensors, or from di?erent viewpoints. Establishing the correspondence of structures within medical images is fundamental to diagnosis, treatment planning, and surgical guidance. The conference papers address state-of-the-art techniques for prov- ing reliable and e?cient registration techniques, thereby imposing relationships between speci?c application areas and appropriate registration schemes. We are grateful to all those who contributed to the success of WBIR 2010.

Book Synopsis Variational Methods for Discontinuous Structures by : Gianni Dal Maso
Download or read book Variational Methods for Discontinuous Structures written by Gianni Dal Maso and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the Proceedings of the International Workshop Variational Methods For Discontinuous Structures, which was jointly organized by the Dipar timento di Matematica Francesco Brioschi of Milano Politecnico and the Interna tional School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) of Trieste. The Conference took place at Villa Erba Antica (Cernobbio) on the Lago di Como on July 4- 6, 2001. In past years the calculus of variations faced mainly the study of continuous structures, say particularly problems with smooth solutions. One of the deepest and more delicate problems was the regularity of weak solutions. More recently, new sophisticated tools have been introduced in order to study discontinuities: in many variational problems solutions develop singularities, and sometimes the most interesting part of a solution is the singularity itself. The conference intended to focus on recent developments in this direction. Some of the talks were devoted to differential or variational modelling of image segmentation, occlusion and textures synthesizing in image analysis, varia tional description of micro-magnetic materials, dimension reduction and structured deformations in elasticity and plasticity, phase transitions, irrigation and drainage, evolution of crystalline shapes; in most cases theoretical and numerical analysis of these models were provided. viii Preface Other talks were dedicated to specific problems of the calculus of variations: variational theory of weak or lower-dimensional structures, optimal transport prob lems with free Dirichlet regions, higher order variational problems, symmetrization in the BV framework.
