Book excerpt: For ten days at the end of September, 1987, a group of about 75 scientists from 21 different countries gathered in a restored monastery on a 750 meter high piece of rock jutting out of the Mediterranean Sea to discuss the simulation of the transport of electrons and photons using Monte Carlo techniques. When we first had the idea for this meeting, Ralph Nelson, who had organized a previous course at the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture, suggested that Erice would be the ideal place for such a meeting. Nahum, Nelson and Rogers became Co-Directors of the Course, with the help of Alessandro Rindi, the Director of the School of Radiation Damage and Protection, and Professor Antonino Zichichi, Director of the "Ettore Majorana" Centre. The course was an outstanding success, both scientifically and socially, and those at the meeting will carry the marks of having attended, both intellectually and on a personal level where many friendships were made. The scientific content of the course was at a very high caliber, both because of the hard work done by all the lecturers in preparing their lectures (e. g. , complete copies of each lecture were available at the beginning of the course) and because of the high quality of the "students", many of whom were accomplished experts in the field. The outstanding facilities of the Centre contributed greatly to the success. This volume contains the formal record of the course lectures.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Three-dimensional Monte Carlo coupled electron-photon-positron transport calculations are often performed to determine characteristics such as energy or charge deposition in a wide range of systems exposed to radiation field such as electronic circuitry in a space-environment, tissues exposed to radiotherapy linear accelerator beams, or radiation detectors. Modeling these systems constitute a challenging problem for the available computational methods and resources because they can involve; i) very large attenuation, ii) large number of secondary particles due to the electron-photon-positron cascade, and iii) large and highly forward-peaked scattering. This work presents a new automated variance reduction technique, referred to as ADEIS (Angular adjoint-Driven Electron-photon-positron Importance Sampling), that takes advantage of the capability of deterministic methods to rapidly provide approximate information about the complete phase-space in order to automatically evaluate variance reduction parameters. More specifically, this work focuses on the use of discrete ordinates importance functions to evaluate angular transport and collision biasing parameters, and use them through a modified implementation of the weight-window technique. The application of this new method to complex Monte Carlo simulations has resulted in speedups as high as five orders of magnitude.

Book excerpt: "The MC model was also used to calculate dose distributions with the fast MC code XVMC in CT images of phantoms of clinical interest. These dose distributions were compared to dose calculations performed by the pencil-beam algorithm-based treatment planning system CadPlan and verified against measurements. Good agreement between calculations and measurements was achieved with both systems for phantoms containing 1-dimensional heterogeneities, provided a minimal quality of the CT images. In phantoms with 3-dimensional heterogeneities however, CadPlan appeared unable to predict the dose accurately, whereas MC provided with a more satisfactory dose distribution, despite some local discrepancies." --

Book excerpt: Monte Carlo calculations were performed to determine the two-dimensional dose distribution in a metal/oxide/silicon substrate structure irradiated by the electron beam from a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The objective was to investigate energy deposition in transistors neighboring an MOS capacitor test pattern irradiated by a SEM electron beam. The principal conclusion is that no damage to neighboring transistors is predicted - the dose in the oxide layer 2 microns from the boundary of the test pattern is four orders of magnitude smaller than the soe dose in the test pattern oxide for a 20 keV beam. Plots and tables of depth dose distribution, radial dose distribution, dose distribution near a rectangular target pattern, charge deposition distribution, and radial distribution of reflected charge are presented. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two Monte Carlo systems, EGSnrc and Geant4, were used to calculate dose distributions in large electron fields used in radiotherapy. Source and geometry parameters were adjusted to match calculated results with measurement. Both codes were capable of accurately reproducing the measured dose distributions of the 6 electron beams available on the accelerator. Depth penetration was matched to 0.1 cm. Depth dose curves generally agreed to 2% in the build-up region, although there is an additional 2-3% experimental uncertainty in this region. Dose profiles matched to 2% at the depth of maximum dose in the central region of the beam, out to the point of the profile where the dose begins to fall rapidly. A 3%/3mm match was obtained outside the central region except for the 6 MeV beam, where dose differences reached 5%. The discrepancy observed in the bremsstrahlung tail in published results that used EGS4 is no longer evident. The different systems required different source energies, incident beam angles, thicknesses of the exit window and primary foils, and distance between the primary and secondary foil. These results underscore the requirement for an experimental benchmark of electron scatter for beam energies and foils relevant to radiotherapy.

Book excerpt: The SANDYL electron-photon coupled Monte Carlo code has been compared with previously published experimental bremsstrahlung data at 20.9 MeV electron energy. The code was then used to calculate forward-directed spectra, angular distributions and dose-reduction factors for three practical configurations. These are: 20 MeV electrons incident on 1 mm of W + 59 mm of Be, 45 MeV electrons of 1 mm of W and 45 MeV electrons on 1 mm of W + 147 mm of Be. The application of these results to flash radiography is discussed. 7 references, 12 figures, 1 table.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiation dose distribution measurements have been carried out by the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) using 200 and 391 MeV electron beams completely penetrating layers of Aluminum, Lead and Aluminum, Polymethyl Melthacrylate (PMMA), and PMMA sandwiching an air gap. For the case of 391 MeV electrons, the results have been compared previously to the corresponding distributions predicted by the Monte Carlo simulation codes EGS3 and ACCEPT (Ref. 1). Those measurements/predictions for 391 MeV are here compared to predictions by the CYLTRAN electron/photon transport code, and the 200 MeV measurements done by NSWC are compared to CYLTRAN calculations. The CYLTRAN code predictions agree well with measurements at 391 MeV. Comparison of CYLTRAN calculations with the NSWC results for 200 MeV indicates possible saturation of the detectors used to take the measurements. The distribution of energy dose within the target has a large dependence on the location of the air gap. The variation in dose distribution is caused by the change in target geometry resulting from insertion of the air gap.
