Spatial variations - The rms differences between densities at locations 50, 100, and 200 nmi apart are provided in Tables 4, 8 and 11 for low- and middle- latitude stations at altitudes from 20 through 60 km. These rms values are estimates of the day-to-day variability around the mean density gradients given in Table 5 for low latitudes and Tables 9 and 12 for middle latitudes. Time variations - The rms variability of density for time periods from 1 to 12 hr in tropical regions is given in Table 13 for altitudes up to 60 km. Estimates were derived using autocorrelation theory and an analysis of the diurnal variation of density, which is the dominant periodic cycle at low latitudes. Analyses of available density observations at several midlatitude locations for altitudes between 30 and 60 km provide reasonable estimates of the magnitude (and changes with season and latitude) of the variability of density with time for periods up to 72 hr. Variations of density at these latitudes are relatively small during summer and do not increase significantly with time. Rms variations remain between 1-1/2 and 4 percent for all periods up to 72 hr.

It is now weil established that smaller-scale motions-in particular gravity waves and turbulence-are of fundamental importance in the general circulation of the mesosphere; they seem to be similarly, if less spectacularly, significant in the troposphere, and probably also in the stratosphere. Our understanding of these motions, their effects on the mean circulation and their mutual interactions is progressing rapidly, as is weil illustrated by the papers in this issue; there are reports of observational studies, especially with new instruments such as the Japanese MV radar, reviews of the state of theory, a laboratory study and an analysis of gravity waves and their effects in the high resolution "SKYHI" general circulation model. There are good reasons to suspect that gravity waves may be of crucial significance in making the stratospheric circulation the way it is (modeling experience being one suggestive piece of evidence for this). Direct observational proof has thus far been prevented by the difficulty of making observations of such scales of motion in this region; in one study reported here, falling sphere observations are used to obtain information on the structure and intensity of waves in the upper stratosphere.

V. 2008 Keywords Aeronomy The term “aeronomy” has been used widely for many decades, but its origin has mostly been lost over the years. It was introduced by Sydney Chapman in a Letter to the Editor, entitled “Some Thoughts on Nomenclature”, in Nature in 1946 (Chapman 1946). In that letter he suggested that aeronomy should replace meteorology, writing that the word “meteor is now irrelevant and misleading”. This proposal was apparently not received with much support so in a short note in Weather in 1953 Chapman (1953)wrote: “If, despite its obvious convenience of brevity in itself and its derivatives, it does not commend itself to aeronomers, I think there is a case for modifying my proposal so that instead of the word being used to signify the study of the atmosphere in general, it should be adopted with the restricted sense of the science of the upper atmosphere, for which there is no convenient short word. ” In a chapter, he wrote in a 1960 book (Chapman 1960), he give his nal and de nitive de nition, by stating that “Aeronomy is the science of the upper region of the atmosphere, where dissociation and ionization are important”. The Workshop on “Comparative Aeronomy” was held at ISSI during the week of June 25–29, 2007.

Book excerpt: Analysis of neutral density data has made it possible to extend curves of mean density as a function of latitude and season from 90 to 120 km. There is an approximate isopycnic point at 91 km. Above this point the density variations are reversed from what they are at 80 km. In other words, at 120 km the density in summer and at the tropics is lower than that in CIRA 1965 and in winter the density is higher. The density curves have been idealized near 120 km to join at one of three points. These correspond to typical summer and tropical conditions, winter conditions, and spring/autumn conditions. The summer density is 20 percent below that of the U.S. Standard, the winter density is 50 percent above the Standard and the spring/autumn density is 1 percent above the Standard. By application of appropriate theory the corresponding variations in temperature and mean molecular weight have been calculated. An unexpected result of the theory is the prediction of a seasonal variation of the mean molecular weight. Some of the data presented in the paper have been analyzed since the models were derived. These data have been found to be acceptably close to the models. (Author).
