Book Synopsis Grant and Lee by : Edward H. Bonekemper, III
Download or read book Grant and Lee written by Edward H. Bonekemper, III and published by Regnery Publishing. This book was released on 2012-12-10 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grant and Lee: Victorious American and Vanquished Virginian is a comprehensive, multi-theater, war-long comparison of the command skills of Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee. Written by Edward H. Bonekemper III, Grant and Lee clarifies the impact both generals had on the outcome of the Civil War—namely, the assistance that Lee provided to Grant by Lee's excessive casualties in Virginia, the consequent drain of Confederate resources from Grant's battlefronts, and Lee's refusal and delay of reinforcements to the combat areas where Grant was operating. The reader will be left astounded by the level of aggression both generals employed to secure victory for their respective causes, as Bonekemper demonstrates that Grant was a national general whose tactics were consistent with acheiving Union victory, whereas Lee's own priorities constantly undermined the Confederacy's chances of winning the war. Building on detailed accounts of both generals' major campaigns and battles, this book provides a detailed comparison of the primary military and personal traits of the two men. That analysis supports the preface discussion and the chapter-by-chapter conclusions that Grant did what the North needed to do to win the war: be aggressive, eliminate enemy armies, and do so with minimal casualties (154,000), while Lee was too offensive for the undermanned Confederacy, suffered intolerable casualties (209,000), and allowed his obsession with the Commonwealth of Virginia to obscure the broader interests of the Confederacy. In addition, readers will find interest in the 18 highly detailed and revealing battle maps, as well as in a comprehensive set of appendices that describes the casualties incurred by each army, battle by battle.

Book excerpt: The Westminster Catechism tells us "The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever". This has been Marilyn's life-long passion! Her own faith journey, filled with both disappointment and pain, adventure and joy, has informed her experiences as a mother, grandmother, counselor and friend. As a counselor she has listened to many stories of fear and helplessness, even hopelessness and despair; as a Bible teacher, she has thrilled to see the truths of scripture come alive in hearts that surrendered those feelings to God! This book is an accumulation of God-thoughts, compiled from her morning devotions. For those who already have a relationship with Jesus Christ, Creator, Messiah, Savior, these meditations will enhance their walk with God. For those who are suffering from pain and sorrow, stress and anxiety, it is Marilyn's hope that God will speak comfort and lift the spirits of those who need to know a solution can be found in Him.

Book Synopsis Romans: Three Exegetical Interpretations and the History of Reception by : Daniel Patte
Download or read book Romans: Three Exegetical Interpretations and the History of Reception written by Daniel Patte and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-07-26 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first of a three-volume work, Daniel Patte presents three very different critical exegeses of Romans 1, arguing that all are equally legitimate and hermeneutically plausible. By expanding upon and respecting the exegeses of many erudite scholars of the last two centuries, Patte concludes that three families of vastly different critical interpretations are fully justified: traditional philological and epistolary studies; rhetorical and sociocultural studies; and figurative studies of the “coherence” of Paul's teaching. Arising from a long-standing interdisciplinary investigation of many receptions of Romans in light of recent diversification of exegetical methodologies, Patte concludes that the interpretation of a scriptural text necessarily involves making a choice among equally legitimate and plausible alternatives; and second, that this choice is always contextual and ethical. When these points are denied (by failing to respect the interpretations of others and absolutizing one's interpretation), instead of being a scriptural blessing, Romans becomes a deadly weapon against others – heretics, Jews (Shoah), and many others. The result is a threefold commentary of Romans 1 that is unique in its scope and thorough-going exegesis.
Book Synopsis Magic and Divination in the Middle Ages by : Charles Burnett
Download or read book Magic and Divination in the Middle Ages written by Charles Burnett and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After discussing the terminology of talismanic magic (or necromancy) and its position in divisions of science in the Middle Ages, this book traces the history of talismanic texts from the Classical period through the Arabic world to the Latin Middle Ages. The principal authorities are Hermes and Aristotle, and the search for the ’secret knowledge’ of these ancient sages is shown to have been a catalyst for the translating activity from Arabic into Latin in 12th-century Spain. The second half of the volume is devoted to examples of the kinds of divination prevalent in Arabic and Latin-reading societies: chiromancy, onomancy, scapulimancy, geomancy and fortune-telling. The book ends with advice on when to practice alchemy and a prophetic letter of supposed Arabic provenance, warning of the coming of the Mongols. Several editions of previously unedited texts are included, with translations.
Book Synopsis And the Thunder Said DA by : Ashok Kara
Download or read book And the Thunder Said DA written by Ashok Kara and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-10 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prajapati, the Creator, had three kinds of offspring: gods, men, and demons. They lived with Prajapati as brahmacharins (celibate students) practicing austerities. At the end of their term, the gods requested him saying: "Please instruct us, Sir." Prajapati uttered the syllable Da and he asked: "Have you understood?" The gods replied: "Yes. You have said to us, control yourselves (Damyata)." Prajapati responded: "Yes, you have understood." Then men spoke to him: "Please instruct us, Sir." Prajapati uttered the syllable Da and he asked: "Have you understood?" The men replied: "We have. You have said give (Datta)." Prajapati responded: "Yes, you have understood." Then the demons spoke to him: "Please instruct us, Sir." Prajapati uttered the syllable Da and he asked: "Have you understood?" The demons replied: "Yes. You have said to us, be compassionate (Dayadhvam)." Prajapati responded: "Yes, you have understood." That very thing is repeated by the celestial voice in the form the thunder that speaks to us: "Da, Da, Da" which means, "control yourselves," "give," "be merciful." In other words, writes Kara, the instruction to comprehending the ultimate mystery begins from an ethical injunction. He who is self-controlled, charitable, and merciful is given proximity to the gods. Ethics takes precedence over epistemology and ontology.

Book Synopsis An Anthology of Philosophy in Persia, Vol. 4 by : Mehdi Aminrazavi
Download or read book An Anthology of Philosophy in Persia, Vol. 4 written by Mehdi Aminrazavi and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-12-11 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth volume of the Anthology of Philosophy in Persia deals with one of the richest and yet least known periods of philosophical life in Persia, the centuries between the seventh/thirteenth century, that saw the eclipse of the school of Khorosan, and the tenth/sixteenth century that coincided with the rise of the Safavids. The main schools dealt with in this volume are the Peripatetic (mashsha'i) School, the School of Illumination (ishraq) of Suhrawardi, and various forms of philosophical Sufism, especially the school of Ibn 'Arabi, that had its origins in the works of Ghazzali and 'Ayn al-Qudat Hamadani. This period was also notable for the philosopher-scientists such as Nasir al-Din Tusi and Qutb al-Din Shirazi.
