Jahrhundert, zu regen Diskussionen führte. In den Überlappungszonen der europäischen Vielvölkerreiche traten im 18. Jahrhundert massiv in den neueroberten Gebieten der Habsburgermonarchie Vorfälle mit „Vampiren“ auf, die zu einer ganz Europa erfassenden Vampirismusdebatte führten. Als Grund für das Auftreten der „Vampire“ wird z. B. die geänderten Bestattungsformen - weg von der Feuerbestattung hin zur Beerdigung in einem Grab - als Grund angeführt, da man sich nun nicht mehr sicher sein konnte, dass ein Toter auch wirklich tot war. Aber auch die Rückständigkeit und der Aberglaube der Menschen in den südosteuropäischen Ländern bzw. der orthodoxe Glaube diente als Erklärungsmuster. Durchaus kann es aber auch gewesen sein, dass ältere mythische Vorstellungen hierbei eine Rolle gespielt haben und diese durch eine epidemische Krankheit, die in den entlegenen Dörfern Südosteuropas aufgetreten ist, wieder ans Tageslicht gefunden haben. In der Arbeit soll kurz die Situation der Habsburgermonarchie in Verbindung mit dem osmanischen Reich Anfang des 18. Jahrhunderts dargelegt werden. Danach wird ein kleiner Einblick in die Etymologie des Vampirbegriffes gegeben. Nach der Darstellung der wichtigsten Vampirismusvorfälle werden die militärischen Berichte und die daraus folgenden Diskurse aufgezeigt, deren fast jähes Ende (zumindest für das Habsburgerreich) mit der Gesetzgebung Maria Theresias zu sehen ist.

Metamorphoses of the Vampire explains why representations of vampirism began in the eighteenth century, flourished in the nineteenth, and came to eclipse nearly all other forms of monstrosity in the early twentieth century. Even before its entrance into the realm of arts and letters in the early nineteenth century, the vampire was a feared creature of Eastern European folklore and legend, rising from the grave at night to consume its living loved ones and neighbors, often converting them at the same time into fellow vampires. A major question exists within vampire scholarship: to what extent is this creature a product of European cultural forms, or is the vampire indeed a universal, perhaps even archetypal figure? In this collection of sixteen original essays, the contributors shed light on this question. One essay traces the origins of the legend to the early medieval Norse draugr, an “undead” creature who reflects the underpinnings of Dracula, the latter first appearing as a vampire in Anglo-Irish Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel, Dracula.
