The authors first look, from the perspective of educationalists and policy makers, at values within contemporary education; in particular, moral, spiritual, democratic and environmental values together with arts and health education. Secondly, they focus on the values of pupils and schools, examining school aims and mission statements, the formal curriculum, school ethos and assessment of children's development.; Insights are provided with guidance on how values may be most effectively incorporated into the activities of the schools. This book is intended to be of use as a practical and informative guide to all those involved in primary and secondary education and those interested in values education generally.

Book excerpt: Based upon an empirical study involving training and practising teachers from seven countries, this book investigates the various attitudes and practices towards the teaching of values and their place in the curriculum. Countries covered include: Australia, Eire, Israel, Slovenia, Switzerland, UK and USA. The findings of each of the countries are compared and contrasted in the light of the diverse cultural conditions which are apparent. This book brings together various approaches currently taken in values education and also suggests a theoretical foundation for decision making. The book culminates in practical examples, drawn from the evidence of the research project, which teachers can adapt for use with their own pupils. This book provides a challenging and imaginative perspective on values in education and comes at a time when educators face a new era which demands dynamic, transformative and reflective approaches.

In fifteen wholly new chapters, the authors, outstanding educators, writers and leaders in their particular fields, focus on questions which have a highly current relevance for students of education in 2001 and beyond. Future teachers for our twenty-first century will read chapters which deal with such key issues as education for active citizenship, democracy and education, social identity, conflict and education for peace, social class in children's lives, reconciliation and multiculturalism, Asian values and human rights, minority school settings, marketing schools, gender and ethnicity and achievement, Information Technology, education and new literacies and issues arising from emerging technology-society relations in cyberspace and information technology dependence. The new edition of Education and Society (third edition) complements the excellent selection of chapters in Education and Society and can be used in conjunction with the earlier edition, in order to offer students a wide and stimulating introduction and overview to the major issues in the debate over the relationship between the school and the social and economic and political institutions which surround it. inc.

What is morality, and should schools teach it? In a secular society, how should schools treat the links between morality and religion? How should values enter into professional education and educational leadership? This book, an updated edition of Teaching about Values, will help the reader to think about these questions and many others concerning values in education. Drawing on philosophy without assuming knowledge of the subject, it is for teachers, students of education and anyone who recognises the importance of values in education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Values in Higher Education Teaching explores the way in which teaching, research, learning and higher education are a values enterprise and that an exploration of values is necessary to work out the full purposes of a higher education to guide practices and help academics understand academic work. Values inform thinking and actions and although this is well recognized, values are seldom brought to the forefront of inquiries as practices in higher education are developed. This book argues that by putting values firmly on the agenda of those who teach, work and learn in higher education the academic profession can open up new spaces for value conversations and potentially transform the way in which they practice. Values in Higher Education Teaching is key reading for university lecturers, those with responsibility for leadership and management of higher education and postgraduates studying for higher degrees in higher education. There are few books that directly address the broad and complex question of values in teaching in higher education yet at the same time values are widely recognised as permeating all our practices. In this sense an accepted part of academic life remains in the realm of ‘taken for granted’ rather than being consciously and explicitly explored and practiced. The book deals with the idea of values in both a philosophical and practical manner. It is based on original research and uses both empirical data and theory to address teaching values in higher education and the current values of the higher education system. It explores what academics have valued historically in teaching and also addresses the major reforms of the last 20 years. Reforms have essentially changed the nature of western higher education but have made little real difference to the outcomes for student learning and society whereas teaching with values in all subjects has the potential to radically alter student experiences.

Book excerpt: Some revision of public schooling history is necessary to challenge the dominant mythology that public schools were established on the grounds of values-neutrality. In fact, those responsible for the foundations of public education in Australia were sufficiently pragmatic to know that its success relied on its charter being in accord with public sentiment. Part of the pragmatism was in convincing those whose main experience of education had been through some form of church-based education that state-based education was capable of meeting the same ends. Hence, the documents of the 1870s and 1880s that contained the charters of the various state and territory systems witness to a breadth of vision about the scope of education. Beyond the standard goals of literacy and numeracy, education was said to be capable of assuring personal morality for each individual and a suitable citizenry for the soon-to-be new nation. As an instance, the NSW Public Instr- tion Act of 1880 (cf. NSW, 1912), under the rubric of “religious teaching”, stressed the need for students to be inculcated into the values of their society, including understanding the role that religious values had played in forming that society’s legal codes and social ethics. The notion, therefore, that public education is part of a deep and ancient heritage around values neutrality is mistaken and in need of se- ous revision. The evidence suggests that public education’s initial conception was of being the complete educator, not only of young people’s minds but of their inner character as well.

Book excerpt: In this study of the main conceptual and normative issues to which the education of the adult gives rise, the author demonstrates that these issues can be understood and resolved only by coming to grips with some of the central and most contentious questions in epistemology, philosophy of mind, ethics, and social philosophy. A salient feature of the book is its searching examination of the different types of value judgement by which all educational discourse is permeated. The analysis of the nature and justification of educational judgements forms the basis of an overall philosophy of adult education which should provide a much needed axiological framework for the guidance of practitioners in this growing area of educational concern.

Book excerpt: “This book presents a comprehensive, well-structured and enlightening survey of the problem of indoctrination as manifested in scientific, moral, religious and social fields within the context of an intellectual milieu that prides itself in being liberal and democratic. In the craft of intellectual midwifery which she masters, Professor Tan has but one prescription: constant reflection, but not of the solipsistic or sterile kind. Rather, she advocates fearless questioning within the bounds of a community of learning, which is what schools should ideally be, wherein we all recognise ourselves to be at once students and teachers.” - Professor Alejo José G. Sison, Rafael Escolà Chair of Professional Ethics, University of Navarra, Pamplona, Spain

Book excerpt: In recent decades the life circumstances of most people around the world have changed enormously. We are again expecting scarcity and economic crisis, the danger of war, terrorism and environmental destruction. However, people’s tendencies toward selfishness and the misuse of freedom, uprooting, dissoluteness and crime are also increasingly being seen as threats to society and individual citizens. The decline of support-giving religious, worldview and moral traditions has given rise to great uncertainty about values. Citizens increasingly experience this as a burden, and are becoming more receptive to a reassessment. More of us are seeking a new orientation. Those responsible for children or youth require this with special urgency, because uncertainty in value orientations also creates uncertainty in education. Are there ways to escape this dilemma? How can we achieve new clarity on the worldview and moral foundations of education? To what ends should we direct education? With what difficulties should we reckon? What tasks must parents fulfil and which should be assigned to teachers? These are the topics dealt with in this book. It provides answers to the questions of parents, teachers and other educators, as well as to those of politicians, economic leaders and spiritual counsellors. It will serve to stimulate thought and contribute to achieving agreement on the central educational tasks of our time.
