Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bernard R. Gifford and Linda C. Wing Standardized testing has become a ubiquitous feature of American life. As a major source of information for reducing uncertainty in the alJocation of merit based educational, training, and employment opportunities, testing affects the life chances of individuals. Moreover, testing inOuences the way in which our societyjudgesitselfandprovides for ourcollective future. Test scores may determine a child's admission to lcindergarten and promotion to the fIrst grade. Most states award the high school diploma only ifa student has passed a minimum competency test. Major institutions of higher education typically require applicants to supplement their records of academic achievement with scores on college admissions tests. In the labor market, as a condition of employment or assignment to training programs, more and more employers are requiring workers to sit for personnel selection tests. Additionally, it has become commonplace to use test scores to calibrate our national sociopolitical condition and our capacity to compete with other countries in the global economy. In short, with increasing frequency and intensity, scores on examinations that purport to be objective and precise measures of individual knowledge, abilities, and potential are playing a critical role in the opportunity marketplace. Similarly, test scores are exercising growing influence in assessments of our social and economic institutions and in policy decisions about the relative invesunents that should be made in each. In all these instantiations, test scores are at the center of high-stakes decision making about the future of individuals and of the nation itself.

This book was released on 1960 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A battery of experimental tests was administered to the Air Force Academy class of 1962 on entry. Results of these tests and previously administered selection tests were correlated with final academic grades and Cadet Effectiveness Ratings earned in the fourth class year. The predictive validities of the tests tended to show some loss when compared with those from previous classes. Shifts in validity patterns for the same tests against the same or similar criteria were noted. Nevertheless, all criteria proved to be predictable. Prediction of mathematics and science course grades was best accomplished by the Quantitative composite of the AFOQT, while the English achievement test of the College Entrance Examination Board was the most adequate for the prediction of English grades. These findings are consistent with those from other Academy classes. Thirteen predictors had significant validity coefficients for the prediction of Cadet Effectiveness Ratings. The best single predictor of this leadership criterion was the experimental Peer Status scale of the Life Experience Inventory.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Air Force Officer Qualifying Test (AFOQT) was validated for the prediction of academic performance during Undergraduate Air Battle Manager (UABM) training. Participants were 680 men and women selected for UABM training on the basis of academic performance, aptitude test scores (i.e., AFOQT), commander's ratings, and medical and physical fitness. The criterion was the mean on several written tests taken during the 9 month UABM training course. Validities were examined for the AFOQT subtests, operational composites, and content-based composites in both observed form and after correction for range restriction. All of the subtests and composites were significantly related to academic performance during training. Results of the subtest-level and content-based composite analyses provided insights as to the development of a UABM qualification composite. Prior to implementation, additional studies are required to examine predictive validity against other performance criteria (e.g., pass/fail training, hands-on work samples). Other studies are needed to determine the effects of alternate composites on sex and racial/ethnic subgroup performance including qualification rates (i.e., adverse impact) and predictive validity (i.e., predictive bias).

Book excerpt: This study evaluates the effectiveness of procedures used to select eligible applicants for the Airman Education and Commissioning Program (AECP). Predictors used by AFIT, as well as several new potentially effective predictors were evaluated using a standard criteria-related validity paradigm. These predictor variables are: AFOQT test composite scores, completed college credits, and undergraduate grade point average. Using a sample of 802 cases, from a period of 1979 to 1984, predictor/criteria relationships were demonstrated for the AECP. Prediction models were developed using r-square and Cp analysis. These models were evaluated as to their applicability to current selection procedures. Validity information, correlation matrices, and a prediction model are presented. Keywords: Personnel selection, Prediction of success, Airman education and commissioning program, Validity.
