Book excerpt: Those well-intending workers, especially theorists, who have viewed hungrily the mixed valence problem, but have not yet made the bold leap, might be comforted to learn that the Rochester conference left the virginal state of that problem essentially intact. That is not to say that the event was prosaic. Indeed, the conferees exhibited a level of effervescence appropriate to the freshness and challenge of the problem at hand. If the meeting failed to solve major questions, it at least established several guidelines. One is that future experimental efforts, at least on a short time scale, might be spent most profitably on those substances which exhibit consistent, and hence probably intrinsic, behavior from laboratory to laboratory. A recurring message, not always subtle, to the·theorists was that piecemeal approaches to the mixed valence problem, characteristic of much of the work to date, are of limited usefulness. For at the core of the problem one has a melange of boot-strapping interac tions which must be sorted out and dealt with properly. Para phrasing Phil Anderson (see Epilogue), the mixed valence problem is in the same category of problems which are failing to be done in field theory these days.

Book excerpt: The understanding of electronic behaviour in solids when (some of) the valence electrons have both localized and band-like characteristics is one of the central problems of physics and chemistry in the second half of this century. Many advances have indeed been made using highly sophisticated techniques and concepts. Our objectives in bringing together specialists from different areas was cross-fertilization of ideas and redefinition of bottlenecks and problems. The testimony of the participants and the book which follows indicate a fair degree of success. This book is a record of discussions aimed at digestion and reassessment of some of the recent major advances in our understanding of narrow bands. Note that we expressly asked participants to give a short readable account of the major problems in their field and not to emphasize their latest results to be as "technical" as they might be in a normal scientific article. We did not ask for complete reviews of what was going on in the field and this book should not be read as such. Neither should it be approached as the sort of educational text which the NATO ASI proceedings are supposed to be. We have tried to produce a useable account of a workshop in which an attempt was made to define real problems and to distinguish them from illusory problems.

Book excerpt: Speech by Toyosaburo Taniguchi Welcome my friends to the Third International Symposium, Division on the Theory of Condensed Matter, of the Taniguchi Foundation. The need is now greater than ever for Japan to consider how to strengthen and foster international understanding between nations, peoples and societies, and how to contribute towards the establishment of peace and prosperity in the world. For more than twenty years, I have been supporting a symposium on mathe matics in which distinguished scholars from allover the world have engaged in free discussions. In this symposium, all the participants live together in community style. I have heard from members of some of these study groups that this type of setup has helped to strengthen their ties and relationships with their colleagues on a personal basis. What developed in the mathematics group led me to reorganize and strengthen the Taniguchi Foundation only a few years ago through additional funding. In order to effectively translate the objectives of the Foundation into action with the funds available, it becomes necessary to select those fields which are not necessarily in the limelight of popular interest, which means those fields which, I am afraid, are low in funding. I would rather choose from modest unimpressive academic fields than for the Foundation, projects those that stand out in gaudy, gorgeous popular acclaim.

Book excerpt: The book on Heavy-Fermion Systems is a part of the Book series "Handbook of Metal Physics", each volume of which is written to facilitate the research of Ph.D. students, faculty and other researchers in a specific area. The Heavy-Fermions (sometimes known as Heavy-Electrons) is a loosely defined collection of intermetallic compounds containing rare-earth (mostly Ce) or actinide (mostly U) elements. These unusual names were given due to the large effective mass (100-1,000 times greater than the mass of a free electron) below a critical temperature. They have a variety of ground states including superconducting, antiferromagnetic, paramagnetic or semiconducting. Some display unusual magnetic properties such as magnetic quantum critical point and metamagnetism. This book is essentially a summary as well as a critical review of the theoretical and experimental work done on Heavy Fermions. · Extensive research references. · Comprehensive review of a very rapidly growing number of theories. · Summary of all important experiments. · Comparison with other highly correlated systems such as High-Tc Superconductors. · Possible Technological applications.

Book excerpt: During the Koln meeting (August 28-31, 1984), Irdia was chosen as the venue for the next International Conference on Valence Fluctuations. lhis was in recognition ard appreciation of the work done, both experimental ard theoretical, by the Irdian scientists in this area during the last decade. We decided to hold this Conference in the month of January, 1987 at Bangalore. lhe subject of Valence Fluctuations has kept itself alive ard active as it has provided many shocks ard suprises particularly among the Ce- ard U-based intermetallies. lhe richness of many interesting physical phenomena occurring in mixed valent materials, the flexibility of modifying their physical properties (by alloying, for example) ard the possibility of synthesizing a wide variety of new such materials seem to be the key factors in this regard. Barely six months before this Conference, an International Conference on Anomalous Rare Earths and Actinides (ICAREA) had been held at Grenoble (July, 1986) which also focussed on mixed valence ard heavy fermion phenomena. In spite of this, the response to this' Conference was very enthusiastic and encouraging. Many interesting ard important results were presented at this Conference which have been included in this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of moment formation in metallic systems lies at the interface of localized and itinerant magnetism. The phenomena observed correspond to destruction rather than to formation of spin-correlations. They give rise to the progression from local ized ground states through Kondo and mixed-valence behaviour to itinerant magnetic or non-magnetic systems. Somewhere in the pro gression superconductivity can occur in the presence of f-moments. To bring together the disparate ideas and methods, previously the subject of intense debate only at a number of topical confer ences, a two-week Advanced Study Institute was held August 21 - September 02, 1983, at Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific, Vancouver Island. In the stimulating environment provided by the pines and fiord at the site of this remote United World College on the Canadian West Coast, scientists and students from around the globe gathered to hear lectures by experts. The Study Institute involved seventy-six people and followed in the tradition . of pre vious "Banff" summer schools organized by the Canadian Association of Physicists. It was made possible by grants from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the Natural Sciences & Engineering Research Council of Canada and Atomic Energy of Canada. The grants permitted many young scientists from Nato and non-Nato countries to learn the fundamentals as well as the latest results in the field.

Book excerpt: Synthesis, Crystal Growth and Characterization presents the proceedings of the International School on Synthesis, Crystal Growth and Characterization of Materials for Energy Conversion and Storage, held on October 12-23, 1981, at the National Physical Laboratory in New Delhi, India. The book consists of lectures by distinguished scientists from around the world who tackle different aspects of synthesis, crystal growth, characterization of materials, energy conversion, and energy storage. Organized into four parts encompassing 26 chapters, the book begins with an overview of the synthesis of materials at high temperatures and pressures before turning to a discussion of how macrocrystalline and amorphous silicon is prepared. It then looks at fundamental principles underlying the process of crystal growth, both from the vapor phase and from melt, and methodically introduces the reader to the different techniques used to characterize materials, including neutron scattering and electron transport. The next chapters focus on point defects and aggregates that influence the critical electronic properties of semiconducting materials, X-ray diffraction studies of strains and stresses in thin films used in solid-state devices, and electron spectroscopic studies of solid surfaces. The book also considers the role of physics in microelectronics and vice versa, fast ion transport in solids, and the concept of Syadvada in relation to modern physics. This volume is a valuable resource for participants of the International School on Synthesis, Crystal Growth and Characterization of Materials for Energy Conversion and Storage, as well as active researchers working in areas related to the field.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Eighth Taniguchi Interna tional Symposium on the Theory of Condensed Matter, which was held at Shima Kanko Hotel in Shima, Japan, 10-13 April 1985. The topic of the Symposium was Valence Fluctuation and Heavy Fermion Systems, one of the most fundamental problems in present-day condensed matter physics. The dilute Kondo problem, which is one of the most typical and unique many-body problems in condensed matter physics, developed recently into the dense Kondo and the coherent Kondo lattice problems in the 4f elec tron systems. It is accepted now that a large degeneracy in f-electron systems makes this latter situation possible by enhancing the single-site Kondo state relative to the inter-site magnetic interactions. Now, anoma lous behavior in f-electron systems show rich variety and are called valence fluctuation phenomena as a whole. They have, however, a common fea ture. In the lowest temperature region, they show either heavy Fermion like character or a narrow gap formation at the Fermi energy. Discovery of superconductivity in the heavy Fermion systems is attracting more in terest. Anyway, the valence fluctuating states are thought to be of fun damental importance to bridge the gap between the localized magnetic states and the delocalized nownagnetic states.
