Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I served as an Army trauma surgeon at the 85th Evacuation Hospital, Phu Bai, Vietnam, '70-'71. Into our emergency room were intermittently deposited the wounded, some greviously others not, by the dare- devil Dust Off medieval pilots who risked imminent death with each mission. We routinely witnessed the devistation of war on body, mind and soul. The corpsmen, technicians, nurses, anesthesiologists and surgeons explored every known and out-of-the- box technique to salvage life and limb. If the wounded arrived alive at the 85th, he had a 95% chance of survival. It was and still is that 5% whose injuries were so severe or whose blood loss could not be stemmed that haunt us today. That's PTS. By storytelling for fifty years since returning to the US in late August 1971, I have avoided the (D) and mollified my demons. The intense emotions during my traumatic experience have softened greatly but, I am back in Vietnam on a daily basis. In 2015 I compiled my stories into Welcome Home From Vietnam, Finally, A Vietnam Trauma Surgeon's Memoir. It is gripping, honest, real-life and disturbing. Then we realize that the 58,000+ lives lost did not change a thing. No dominos fell and Vietnam is now our close trading partner. They have been gratious victors. I've lived, studied and researched PTS(D). I now understand that when we were "partying" with booze and weed, we were actually self-medicating to numb recognition of the demons. That process continues today as there exists an epidemic of active duty military and veteran PTS(D), substance abuse ane suicide. I address these issues in this book's appendices but have more current information on the book's web site. Our nation must shift their concentration from treating PTS(D) as a developed disorder and initiate the PREVENTIVE approach I propose PRIOR to discharge. If prevention by vaccination is the answer to Covid-19 why not apply the same principle to PTS(D)?

Book excerpt: The wry and heart-wrenching memoir of a young doctor’s year behind the frontlines in Vietnam. Assigned to the marine camp at Phu Bai, Dr. John A. Parrish confronted all manner of medical trauma, quickly shedding the naïveté of a new medical intern. With this memoir, he crafts a haunting, humane portrait of one man’s agonizing confrontation with war. With a wife and two children awaiting his return home, the young physician lives through the most turbulent and formative year of his life—and finds himself molded into a true doctor by the raw tragedy of the battlefield. His endless work is punctuated only by the arrival of the next helicopter bearing more casualties, and the stark announcements: “12 litter-borne wounded, 20 ambulatory wounded, and 5 dead.” 12, 20 & 5 is an intimate and unique look at the effects of war that Library Journal calls “an autobiographical M*A*S*H* . . . phenomenal.”

In this memoir, Clark begins by detailing his childhood growing up in the fifties and sixties in rural Michigan, where he built forts, became an Eagle Scout, and met his future wife. As the Vietnam War raged, when he turned eighteen, he eventually registered for the draft. In 1969, after his number was called, Clark details how life changed exponentially as he left his new bride behind and reported for duty amid violent protests and draft card burnings. As he narrates his experiences from basic training to his assignment to the army's medical training center and finally his service in Vietnam, Clark provides a compelling glimpse into the emotional influences of war. In this engaging memoir, a Vietnam veteran chronicles his path before, during, and after war as he accepted his fate and learned to embrace the precious gift of life.

Book excerpt: Are you concerned about how many people are saved in the war? And how were they saved? This book will answer your question. It's 1965. A young surgeon is drafted into the U.S. Navy and sent to Vietnam, where he finds himself closer than he ever imagined to the carnage of war. He performs operations while under fire and sees wounds that can barely be contemplated. Marines are dying on the operating table in front of him. The small-town moral certainties he grew up believing in may themselves succumb to the ravages he is witnessing. More than anything, he wants to make it home to marry the woman he loves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reuel Long's experiences as an MD in the emergency rooms of Flint, Michigan, prepared him for only some of what he would see in a mobile army surgical hospital. Antiwar sentiment among the doctors in basic training at Fort Sam Houston set the tone for his tour as a general medical officer. In March 1971, the 27th MASH played a critical role treating survivors of the deadliest attack on any firebase during the Vietnam War. Long's vivid memoir recalls the casualties he cared for during the war, including one he crossed paths with 44 years later--who in his own words describes his rehabilitation from the loss of his legs and his protesting the war from a wheelchair. An addendum gives an insider's account of the U.S. military's failure to remedy a fatal design flaw in the M16 rifle, which caused an unknown number of American casualties.

A gift from a heroine who was killed at twenty-seven but whose voice has survived to remind us of the humanity and decency that endure amid—and despite—the horror and chaos of war.” —Francine Prose, O, The Oprah Magazine Brutally honest and rich in detail, this posthumously published diary of a twenty-seven-year-old Vietcong woman doctor, saved from destruction by an American soldier, gives us fresh insight into the lives of those fighting on the other side of the Vietnam War. It is a story of the struggle for one’s ideals amid the despair and grief of war, but most of all, it is a story of hope in the most dire circumstances. “As much a drama of feelings as a drama of war.” —Seth Mydans, New York Times “A book to be read by and included in any course on the literature of the war. . . . A major contribution.” —Chicago Tribune “An illuminating picture of what life was like among the enemy guerrillas, especially in the medical community.” —The VVA Veteran, official publication of Vietnam Veterans of America

Book excerpt: In August of 1962, civilian medical doctor Jay Hoyland became an active-duty captain and medical officer in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during the Vietnam War. For the next twelve months, Hoyland provided medical support as a flight surgeon to the Ninety-Third Helicopter Companythe Soc Trang Tigers. It was a year that would prove to be pivotal for Vietnam, the United States, and Hoyland himself. Through the Eyes of a Tiger is the story of one mans tour of duty in the Mekong Delta from November of 1962 through November of 1963. With the help of Hoylands wartime journals and letters sent home to his family, he recreates an unvarnished account of his life during this tumultuous time. Whether it is a heartbreaking visit to a Catholic orphanage, the adrenaline of combat, the unique relationship between brothers-in-arms, or the horrors of the hospital ward, Hoylands vivid imagery and thoughtful prose paint a realistic portrait of war. Set against the broader historical context of the Vietnam War, Through the Eyes of a Tiger is a worthy addition to the scholarship available on the Vietnam War. But more importantly, it reveals the dramatic impact of war, both present and future, on the soldier himself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The young American who became a living legend to the world tells how as a navy doctor he helped half a million Vietnamese refugees escape from communist terror... This is the true, first-hand narrative of a twenty-seven-year-old Navy Doctor who found himself suddenly ordered to Indo-China, just after the tragic fall of Dien Bien Phu. In a small international compound within the totally Communist-consumed North Viet Nam, he built huge refugee camps to care for the hundreds of thousands of escapees seeking passage to freedom. Through his own ingenuity and that of his shipmates, and with touching humor, he managed to feed, clothe, and treat these leftovers of an eight-year war. Dr. Dooley “processed” over 600,000 refugees down the river and out to sea on small craft, where they were transferred to U.S. Navy ships to be carried to the free areas of Saigon. The “Bac Sy My,” as they called the American doctor, explains how he conquered the barriers of custom, language and hate to become, as the President of Viet Nam said of him, “Beloved by a whole nation.”

Book excerpt: As a New York City bachelor about to complete his medical training, the last place Paul Brief thought he'd end up was Vietnam. The year was 1969, and Brief, an ambitious if irreverent orthopedic surgeon, was too busy enjoying the fruits of the sexual revolution to consider the possibility of being drafted. In Hootch 8, Brief details his sudden arrival at a naval hospital outside Danang, along with dozens of his fellow soldier-doctors, following a grueling stint in boot camp, where they're taught not only how to heal, but how to fight. Through Brief's eyes, we witness the brutal realities of wartime medicine, with its endless stench of blood and steady stream of double amputees. Along the way, we're introduced to the cast of characters who become the key to his survival in Nam. Shot through with humor and compassion, Hootch 8 is a surprisingly moving account of one man's transformative encounter with the tragedies and absurdities of war.
