Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To play the flute with a clear and convincing sound depends on the understanding of the physical concepts required to make the instrument sound without using undue force and applying just the right amount of physical help where needed. Edmund Raas has explored and taught these fine-points for over 60 years. Born in Switzerland, he has been influenced by the teachings of Emil Niosi (pupil of the great Georges Barrre), Hugo Haldemann, Jean-Pierre Rampal and Aurle Nicolet. Besides teaching, he had the opportunity to play solo concerti and act in many chamber music groups including Renaissance and Baroque music on period instruments. From 1977 to 2005 he also acted as first flutist in the Municipal Symphony Orchestra of So Paulo, Brazil. Since his retirement from this orchestra he is pursuing a career as composer.

Book excerpt: Vade-mecums are guide books you carry with you. They have been around forever and are common in Europe for all sorts of things. The Latin term literally means "go with me". Here, Dr. Montgomery invites you to go with him as he explores the literature of food and develops a theology of gastronomy. Along with being a theologian and philosopher, an attorney, a barrister, a French advocate, a teacher, a husband and many other things, Dr. Montgomery is a lover of fine dining and formally embraces its craft with care. In the age of the microwave, where food is either fast or frozen and almost always pre-prepared, he wants to introduce us to the glories of fine dining, where we can take joy in all our Father has provided to us beyond the simple requirements of sustenance. With Dr. Montgomery as your guide, you will meet great chefs, and travel across time and space with food as the focus, enjoying the views, flavors and smells (and recipes!) Everything Dr. Montgomery explores takes place in light of faith in a God who is now one of us, who made all the senses, loves variety, knows hospitality, and will culminate all of history in the best of wedding feasts to which every good meal points and of which every great meal participates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if we truly belong to each other? What if we are all walking around shining like the sun? Mystic, monk, and activist Thomas Merton asked those questions in the twentieth century. Writer Sophfronia Scott is asking them today. In The Seeker and the Monk, Scott mines the extensive private journals of one of the most influential contemplative thinkers of the past for guidance on how to live in these fraught times. As a Black woman who is not Catholic, Scott both learns from and pushes back against Merton, holding spirited, and intimate conversations on race, ambition, faith, activism, nature, prayer, friendship, and love. She asks: What is the connection between contemplation and action? Is there ever such a thing as a wrong answer to a spiritual question? How do we care about the brutality in the world while not becoming overwhelmed by it? By engaging in this lively discourse, readers will gain a steady sense of how to dwell more deeply within--and even to love--this despairing and radiant world.

Book excerpt: This compact, one-semester introduction to the Bible prepares students to begin reading the biblical text as Christian Scripture, focusing on the meaning of Scripture for the church. The editors and contributors--experienced teachers with expertise in different parts of the Bible--orient students to the whole of Scripture so that they may read the biblical text for themselves. The book first explains what Christians believe about Scripture and gives a bird's-eye survey of the whole biblical story. Chapters then introduce the story, arrangement, style, and key ideas of each division of the Old and New Testament, helping readers see how the books of the Bible make a coherent whole.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook is designed to help jobbing histopathologists jog their memory and get through more workload in any working day. Rapid access is facilitated by a bullet-point, tabular and diagrammatic style, as well as by handy anatomical diagrams, guidance on the ‘Cut-Up’ with emphasis on core ‘datasets’ and by a special index for frozen section advice, grading systems and scoring systems. The book provides, where useful, differential diagnosis lists and presents diagnostically helpful molecular and immunohistochemical findings. Information is kept up-to-date on a dedicated website www.pathbook.com. The Diagnostic Criteria Handbook in Histopathology is not designed to be an “exam cram” and neither will it serve as a basic text for beginners. Trainees, however, will still benefit from the sheer breadth of topics covered in this one small volume: from lab management and lab methods, to autopsy practice, cytology and all sub-specialties in surgical pathology. A chapter on exam technique and mnemonics makes the book also an essential companion for those revising for professional exams. So why clutter your precious desk space with multiple sets of heavy two-volume reference works? Give this handy Vade Mecum a place next to your microscope and see how much time you could save!
