Book Synopsis A Gastronomic Vade Mecum by : John Warwick Montgomery
Download or read book A Gastronomic Vade Mecum written by John Warwick Montgomery and published by . This book was released on 2019-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vade-mecums are guide books you carry with you. They have been around forever and are common in Europe for all sorts of things. The Latin term literally means "go with me". Here, Dr. Montgomery invites you to go with him as he explores the literature of food and develops a theology of gastronomy. Along with being a theologian and philosopher, an attorney, a barrister, a French advocate, a teacher, a husband and many other things, Dr. Montgomery is a lover of fine dining and formally embraces its craft with care. In the age of the microwave, where food is either fast or frozen and almost always pre-prepared, he wants to introduce us to the glories of fine dining, where we can take joy in all our Father has provided to us beyond the simple requirements of sustenance. With Dr. Montgomery as your guide, you will meet great chefs, and travel across time and space with food as the focus, enjoying the views, flavors and smells (and recipes!) Everything Dr. Montgomery explores takes place in light of faith in a God who is now one of us, who made all the senses, loves variety, knows hospitality, and will culminate all of history in the best of wedding feasts to which every good meal points and of which every great meal participates.

Book Synopsis The Seeker and the Monk by : Scott Sophfronia
Download or read book The Seeker and the Monk written by Scott Sophfronia and published by Broadleaf Books. This book was released on 2021-03-16 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if we truly belong to each other? What if we are all walking around shining like the sun? Mystic, monk, and activist Thomas Merton asked those questions in the twentieth century. Writer Sophfronia Scott is asking them today. In The Seeker and the Monk, Scott mines the extensive private journals of one of the most influential contemplative thinkers of the past for guidance on how to live in these fraught times. As a Black woman who is not Catholic, Scott both learns from and pushes back against Merton, holding spirited, and intimate conversations on race, ambition, faith, activism, nature, prayer, friendship, and love. She asks: What is the connection between contemplation and action? Is there ever such a thing as a wrong answer to a spiritual question? How do we care about the brutality in the world while not becoming overwhelmed by it? By engaging in this lively discourse, readers will gain a steady sense of how to dwell more deeply within--and even to love--this despairing and radiant world.

The book first explains what Christians believe about Scripture and gives a bird's-eye survey of the whole biblical story. Chapters then introduce the story, arrangement, style, and key ideas of each division of the Old and New Testament, helping readers see how the books of the Bible make a coherent whole.

A chapter on exam technique and mnemonics makes the book also an essential companion for those revising for professional exams.
