Book excerpt: This book is a unique report on the frontiers of subnuclear physics presented by world specialists in a clear, rigorous and simple way.The problem of the physical vacuum is presented in the opening lecture by T D Lee and the effective string-theoretical approach to cosmological vacua by G Veneziano. Effective theoretical approaches to light and heavy quark physics are presented by H Leutwyler and M Neubert. V N Gribov discusses the quark confinement and N Seiberg the problem of finding the effective actions in supersymmetric theories. A detailed analysis confronting electroweak theory with the high precision experimental data is presented by D Schildknecht. The great specialist in membrane theory, M Duff, presents the latest results of the 11-dimensional approach, while the finite temperature effective theories are discussed by M Shaposhnikov. The unification and the physics beyond the standard model constitute the content of the lectures by R Barbieri and D Nanopoulos. The experimental data from LEP and Hera are presented by M Pohl and G Wolf. N F Ramsey, the world specialist in the field, discusses how to explore the universe with atomic clocks. An elusive Z' is the subject of a specialised seminar by P Frampton. This volume contains the reports presented by a selected group of “new talents” on various topics in the field of subnuclear physics.

Book excerpt: UNDER THE SPELL OF THE GAUGE PRINCIPLE — by G 't Hooft The University of Bologna and its Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics and the Italian Physical Society, celebrated in 1998 the bicentenary of a great pioneer in the field of electric phenomena — Luigi Galvani, the father of macroelectricity. During these two centuries, the physics of electric phenomena has given rise first to the Maxwell equations, then to quantum electrodynamics, and finally to the synthesis of all reproducible phenomena, the “Standard Model”. A cornerstone of the Standard Model is quantum chromodynamics (QCD), which describes the interaction between quarks and gluons in the innermost part of the structure of matter. The discovery of QCD will be recalled in the future as one of the greatest achievements of mankind. Many physicists, the world over, have contributed to its creation on both the experimental and the theoretical front. Professor Antonino Zichichi has played an important role in this scientific venture, as documented by his works which are reproduced in this invaluable volume. One of the founders of European physics, Professor Victor F Weisskopf, contributes with his memories of the time when QCD had many problems. This volume owes its existence to a founding father of QCD, Professor Vladimir N Gribov, whose sudden demise prevented him from directly contributing to its final edition. Two world leaders in subnuclear theoretical physics, Professors Gerardus 't Hooft and Gabriele Veneziano, illustrate the significance of the contributions of Antonino Zichichi in QCD. Contents:Preface (O Barnabei et al.)Introduction (L N Lipatov)Three Problems Facing QCD (V F Weisskopf)The Creation of Quantum Chromodynamics (G 't Hooft)The Effective Energy and the Universality Features in QCD Processes (G Veneziano) Readership: High energy and mathematical physicists. Experimental highights from the most relevant sources of new data were presented and discussed, including the latest news on theoretical developments in quantizing the gravitational forces. This volume constitutes the proceedings of the School. It is dedicated to the memory of Victor Frederick Weisskopf, a founder — together with John Stewart Bell, Patrick Maynard Stuart Blackett and Isidor Isaac Rabi — of the “Ettore Majorana” Centre for Scientific Culture, this School being the first of its 114 Schools now in existence. This book constitutes the proceedings of that meeting. It focuses on the theoretical investigation of several basic unity issues, including: (1) the understanding of gauge theories in both their continuum and lattice versions; (2) the possible existence and relevance of large extra dimensions together with the resultant lowering of the Planck/string scale to the TeV range; (3) the origin and structure of flavour mixing in the quark and lepton (neutrino) sectors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Adriatic Meetings have traditionally been conferences on the most - vanced status of science. They are one of the very few conferences in physics aiming at a very broad participation of young and experienced researchers with di?erent backgrounds in particle physics. Particle physics has grown into a highly multi-faceted discipline over the sixty years of its existence, mainly because of two reasons: Particle physics as an experimental science is in need of large-scale laboratory set-ups, involving typically collaborations of several hundreds or even thousands of researchers and technicians with the most diverse expertise. This forces particle physics, being one of the most fundamental dis- plines of physics, to maintain a constant interchange and contact with other disciplines, notably solid-state physics and laser physics, cosmology and - trophysics, mathematical physics and mathematics. Since the expertise necessary in doing research in particle physics has become tremendously demanding in the last years, the ?eld tends to organize purely expert conferences, meetings and summer schools, such as for detector development, for astroparticle physics or for string theory. TheAdriaticMeetingthroughitsentirehistoryhasbeenaplaceforest- lishing exchange between theory and experiment. The 9th Adriatic Meeting successfully continued this tradition and even intensi?ed the cross-discipline communication by establishing new contacts between the community of c- mologists and of particle physicists. The exchange between theorists and - perimentalists was impressively intensive and will certainly have a lasting e?ect on several research projects of the European and world-wide physics community.
