Book excerpt: Discover heart-racing intrigue in this Thriller Short of romantic suspense. Originally published in LOVE IS MURDER (2013), edited by #1 New York Times bestselling author Sandra Brown. In this chilling Thriller Short, USA TODAY bestseller author Jon Land and Jeff Ayers write about the incongruity between a dying town in Middle America and the golden dreams its inhabitants once possessed. Molly Wagner once lived a life out of the all-American scrapbook. Loving husband, cherished son, bouncy dog. But like an old photo, the happiness and love are fading. She’s lost her job, the bank is foreclosing on her house and her husband’s passion and physique are growing flaccid. From there, matters inexorably spiral downward. First the dog dies, then even worse calamities befall her. If only time could be turned back, if only life were like an episode of The Twilight Zone. Then fate gives her one a last shot. But will it be desolation or wonder that triumphs? Book excerpt: THE STORY BEHIND THE DOCUMENTARY MY NAME IS PAULI MURRAY A prophetic memoir by the activist who “articulated the intellectual foundations” (The New Yorker) of the civil rights and women’s rights movements. First published posthumously in 1987, Pauli Murray’s Song in a Weary Throat was critically lauded, winning the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award and the Lillian Smith Book Award among other distinctions. Yet Murray’s name and extraordinary influence receded from view in the intervening years; now they are once again entering the public discourse. At last, with the republication of this “beautifully crafted” memoir, Song in a Weary Throat takes its rightful place among the great civil rights autobiographies of the twentieth century. In a voice that is energetic, wry, and direct, Murray tells of a childhood dramatically altered by the sudden loss of her spirited, hard-working parents. Orphaned at age four, she was sent from Baltimore to segregated Durham, North Carolina, to live with her unflappable Aunt Pauline, who, while strict, was liberal-minded in accepting the tomboy Pauli as “my little boy-girl.” In fact, throughout her life, Murray would struggle with feelings of sexual “in-betweenness”—she tried unsuccessfully to get her doctors to give her testosterone—that today we would recognize as a transgendered identity. We then follow Murray north at the age of seventeen to New York City’s Hunter College, to her embrace of Gandhi’s Satyagraha—nonviolent resistance—and south again, where she experienced Jim Crow firsthand. An early Freedom Rider, she was arrested in 1940, fifteen years before Rosa Parks’ disobedience, for sitting in the whites-only section of a Virginia bus. Murray’s activism led to relationships with Thurgood Marshall and Eleanor Roosevelt—who respectfully referred to Murray as a “firebrand”—and propelled her to a Howard University law degree and a lifelong fight against "Jane Crow" sexism. We also read Betty Friedan’s enthusiastic response to Murray’s call for an NAACP for Women—the origins of NOW. Murray sets these thrilling high-water marks against the backdrop of uncertain finances, chronic fatigue, and tragic losses both private and public, as Patricia Bell-Scott’s engaging introduction brings to life. Now, more than thirty years after her death in 1985, Murray—poet, memoirist, lawyer, activist, and Episcopal priest—gains long-deserved recognition through a rediscovered memoir that serves as a “powerful witness” (Brittney Cooper) to a pivotal era in the American twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A legendary beauty, hailed as one of the greatest singing actors of her time, Jarmila Novotná (1907–1994) was an internationally known opera soprano from the former Czechoslovakia. Best known for her performances in Der Rosenkavalier, The Marriage of Figaro, and La Traviata, she was a celebrated performer at the Metropolitan Opera and other theaters across Europe and the United States. A "natural screen actress," Novotná also appeared in Hollywood hits such as The Search (1948) with Montgomery Clift (with whom she shared an enduring friendship) and The Great Caruso (1951) with Mario Lanza. She was also considered a pioneering "crossover" star who performed on Broadway, and worked in radio and television with Bing Crosby and Abbott and Costello. This gifted artist captivated audiences worldwide, and while she was still a young woman, the Czech government treated her as a national heroine and its cultural ambassador. In Jarmila Novotná: My Life in Song, editor William V. Madison brings Novotná's own English-language version of her best-selling memoir to readers for the first time. The memoir details how, following her debut in 1925 at the National Theater in Prague, her fame quickly evolved into a tremendous musical career at a time of unprecedented political upheaval. Novotná provides eyewitness accounts of the Nazi takeovers of Germany and Austria, the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia, and the aftermath of the Velvet Revolution in 1989, as well as her extensive travels in the United States during and after World War II. Throughout the memoir, lavishly illustrated with photos from her personal collection, Novotná shares entertaining stories about her time in Hollywood, an "unending stream of parties"— including those hosted by Louis B. Mayer, co-founder of MGM Studios—alongside such stars as Jimmy Stewart and Elizabeth Taylor. Novotná also offers revealing profiles of many notable artistic figures of the time, including director Max Reinhardt, composer Cole Porter, and conductor Arturo Toscanini, and dignitaries such as Dwight Eisenhower and Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, the first president of Czechoslovakia. This fascinating self-portrait offers a window on history and the reflections of a captivating and supremely talented figure who left an indelible mark on the performing arts.

Perhaps it was a mistake to return to the same small town. On his last visit, the streets of Crestwood lay buried in snow. This time, blazing heat overwhelms the sleepy resort community. In the cool of evening, locals and summer visitors gather for a church supper. Afterward, one guest fails to return to the hotel, but East refuses to take an interest, reasoning that an attractive young woman might have any number of more interesting prospects. But everyone insists that it's not like Mary Cassidy to suddenly disappear, citing her pleasant ladylike behavior and her kindness to a motherless child. As East's host, Sheriff Perley Wilcox, uncovers further details about the missing woman, the detective gradually becomes more and more drawn into the case until his concern is captured by a grotesque discovery in the town's well. The suspense builds as East investigates Mary's background and learns that the retiring gentlewoman wasn't at all what she seemed to be — and that time is running out for the next victim!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new book A Leap of Faith: The Call to Art, Horovitz examines the diverse and convergent roles of the therapist as artist, writer, mother, teacher, and clinician. This new book questions what is essential in art therapy and engages authentic positioning in and out of the therapeutic office. This return to art, or the "call to art," changed the author’s identity and efficacy as a therapist. Artwork, fiction, and clinical work transform as insight occurs. The casework throughout the book provides models for integrating the assessment and intuitive features of art therapy educator and clinician. Horovitz' own work and that of her clients is shared without guile. In this book, the myth of clinician neutrality is broken and instead the author's focus is on bringing one's conscious self to work in order to become more authentic with oneself and one’s clients. This state of "elemental play" perpetuates that connection with the patient as another human being on the trajectory towards wellness. The fundamental process of art making that guides personal and professional life is described as "elemental play." Play is seen as the intrinsic element of the art making process that offers directions for resolution of conflicts, the evolution of personal growth, and ultimately 'soulution.' This concept of an artistic "soulution" offers the necessary elements of healing and transformation. For any reader, whether trained in art therapy or not, A Leap of Faith: The Call to Art validates the transcendent aspects of art creativity, and play.
