Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nine of India’s 14 prime ministers have been elected from constituencies in Uttar Pradesh, the country’s most populous state and most complex political battleground. The road to Delhi is said to go through Lucknow. Hence, elections in UP are among the most hotly debated and closely watched political contests in the nation. With the UP Legislative Assembly elections scheduled for the first quarter of 2022, UP Elections 2022: More Than a State at Stake raises the all-important question: who will emerge winner in UP in 2022? How will this victory impact the general elections in 2024? In the 2017 Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registered a massive win in UP, bagging 312 seats in the 403-seat Assembly. The Samajwadi Party (SP) won 47 seats and its ally, the Congress, only seven. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) ended up with 19 seats, its worst tally ever. In UP Elections 2022: More Than a State at Stake, well-known journalist and political commentator Anil Maheshwari analyses the caste and religious factors that colour electoral outcomes while taking a hard look at the political alliances gearing up to wrest power back from the BJP. Teeming with insightful predictions about the future of UP, and by extension, the nation, this book is a must-read for those who are invested in Indian democracy.

Book excerpt: The book examines the influence of context in which elections in contemporary India take place. It explores the interplay of elements of democracy and governance in electioneering—a process of the conglomeration of everything related to the election, including campaigns, approach of political parties, approach of election commission, code of conduct, election manifestos, voting and—message-design of electoral communication in India. The volume: • Is founded on a variety of conceptual approaches: political economy approach, public sphere approach, community and context approach, federalism approach, institutional approach, and cultural approach. • Draws on qualitative and quantitative analysis of rigorous field data. • Underscores the contexts, contours, and cultures of elections in India; • Analyses the ‘narratives’ inherent in electoral campaigns and electoral marketing; • Studies complex, overlapping and multidimensional ways elections can be studied; • Explicates the goal of electioneering in contemporary India—whether it is an ‘institution-driven’ or an ‘actor-driven’ process. The volume will be essential reading for students, teachers and researchers of Indian politics and South Asian studies.

Book excerpt: This book examines how the BJP became the world’s largest political party. It goes beyond the usual narrative of the party’s Hindutva politics to explain how, under Narendra Modi, the party reshaped the Indian polity using its own brand of social engineering. According to the findings of this book, this reconstruction was cleverly powered by new caste coalitions, the claim of a new welfare state that focused on marginalised social groups and the making of a women-voter base. Based on data from three unique indices—the Mehta–Singh Social Index, which studies the caste composition of Indian political parties; the Narad Index, which calculates communication patterns across topics and audiences; and PollNiti, which connects and tallies hundreds of political and economic datasets—The New BJP is full of startling insights into the way both the party and the country function. Previously untapped historical records, exclusive interviews with party leaders and comprehensive reportage from across India provide a fresh understanding of the BJP’s growth areas, including the Northeast and south India. A lucid and objective study of the BJP and India today, this book will be useful to researchers, journalists, students, activists and general public alike. Print edition not for sale in South Asia (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka).

Book excerpt: This book explains why, how, and where ethnic political parties unexpectedly seek votes from non-coethnics and when voters support non-coethnic parties. It draws on case studies of three Indian states (Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan) and of Indian national elections to demonstrate how differences in party systems impact political party strategies and voter choices. It shows that multipolar party systems encourage political parties to provide physical security, representation, and economic benefits for minorities, especially Muslims, in India and as a result, foster cross-ethnic links between parties and voters. However, as political arenas become dominated by two or even one party, advocacy for the interests of marginalized groups declines, weakening cross-ethnic linkages. The book thus explains why representation and advocacy for Muslims in Uttar Pradesh and at the national level has alternated dramatically in the 21st century. Based on original fieldwork and supplemented by existing surveys and secondary sources from the 1990s to the present day, the book addresses critical themes such as inclusion and substantive representation in a democracy, caste and minority politics, ethnic violence, and inter-ethnic linkages between politicians and voters. Demonstrating why political parties support and protect the interests of marginalized ethnic groups in certain political conditions but not others, the volume also speaks to larger questions of the health of multiethnic democracies and democratic backsliding around the world.

Book excerpt: In the annals of India’s history, a monumental uprising unfolded in 2020, echoing the resilience and coming together of large sections of its agrarian base. Instigated by the contentious farm laws of 2020, the Farmers’ Movement burgeoned into a year-long saga of protest and perseverance, ending only in December 2021 after the passing of the Farm Laws Repeal Bill, 2021 by the Indian Parliament. From the initial demand for law repeal to the multifaceted growth of the movement, the book traces the journey of the Farmers’ Movement, as each essay dissects the socio-political dynamics, cultural nuances, and mass solidarity that underpinned the protests, including focused analyses from Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and the Sikh diaspora in the United Kingdom. This anthology chronicles the ebb and flow of a nation’s spirit, encapsulating the symbiotic relationship between theory and praxis, between change and continuity. It serves as a testament to the power of collective resistance and a roadmap for future struggles, ensuring that the legacy of the Farmers’ Movement endures beyond the pages of history. This volume is an interdisciplinary project and will be of interest to scholars from diverse fields such as economics, sociology, public policy, political science, history, political geography, gender studies, cultural studies, international studies, architecture, media studies, psychology, and ethnomusicology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Opposition’s 26-party Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) aims to pose a serious challenge to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the 2024 Lok Sabha election. Despite the coalition leaders’ ideological differences and regional rivalries, their overwhelming intent is to prevent Narendra Modi from becoming the first Indian since Jawaharlal Nehru to win three successive five-year prime ministerial terms. The 2024 Lok Sabha election could prove historic. If Narendra Modi wins a third successive five-year prime ministerial term, he will be the first Indian leader to do so since Jawaharlal Nehru. In this sweeping account of events leading up to the 2024 General Election, Minhaz Merchant analyses how Modi has shaped Indian politics, economics and culture during his decade as prime minister. The book examines whether the Opposition’s strategy to present a united front can derail the BJP’s juggernaut. For example, can Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and regional satraps in Opposition-ruled states put aside their differences? Minhaz Merchant has met and interviewed Modi several times since 2012. The author analyses Modi’s policies across key domains: geopolitics, economics, technology and social reform. Broken up into ten broad sections and thirty-one chapters, the book decodes Modi’s evolution over the past decade from a regional leader to a global statesman.

It focuses on the historical continuity of Dalit social justice movements and organizational politics from pre- to post-colonial India and its subsequent institutionalization as a political force with the rise of the BSP in the state since the 1980s. The volume discusses the new age Dalit–Bahujan politics and its ethnicization of caste groups to create a bahujan samaj. The book analyzes the focused political leadership of Kanshiram and Mayawati, the strong party organization, and how they evolved an empowered Dalit ideology and identity by grassroots mobilization and championing Dalit icons and history. The author also explores the party’s strategies, slogans and alliances with other political parties and communities and its political manoeuvrings to retain its influence over the electorate. The book also effectively identifies the reasons for the political marginalization of the BSP in present times in the context of the phenomenal rise of the BJP in the state. The book will be of great interest to researchers and scholars of political science, sociology, Dalit and subaltern studies, exclusion studies and those working on the intersectionality of caste and class. It will also be useful for policy makers, think tanks and NGOs working in the domain of caste, marginality, social exclusion and identity politics.

Book excerpt: The People' and 'New India' are terms that are being invoked freely to both understand and govern India as she enters her 75th year of post-colonial nationhood. Yet, there is little clarity on who these people of India really are, what they do, their desires, histories and attachments to India. Similarly, the phrase 'New India' is used far too loosely to explain away a dangerously confounding politics. In this book, some of the most respected scholars of South Asia come together to write about a person or a concept that holds particular sway in the politics of contemporary India. In doing so, they collectively open up an original understanding of what the politics at the heart of New India are-and how best we might come to analyse them. This brilliant collection put together by Ravinder Kaur and Nayanika Mathur includes original and accessible essays by leading social science and humanities scholars of South Asia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dynamics of Indian politics is reflected in the flexible and fluctuating relations between the centre and the states as well as in the equations within the multiparty political system. This book is one of the first to explore the participation of women in state politics in India and how women navigate the dynamic spaces and hierarchies of the Indian political system. With the help of in-depth studies of 16 states in India, it analyses the gender profile of political parties and legislative bodies in these states; the question of women’s representation which is miniscule in legislative assemblies and women voters and their voting choices. It also explores the roadblocks and barriers they face, along with a study of women’s participation in informal politics. The chapters in this book underline the need for women’s active participation both inside and outside the party system to make democracy more robust and meaningful. Topical, rich in empirical data, this book will be an essential read for scholars and researchers of Indian politics, gender studies, political science, sociology, public administration, and South Asia studies.
