Book excerpt: This study explored the use of group art therapy to enhance the social skills of children with Autism and Down syndrome. This single group case study format detailed the progress of four students in a Midwest suburban public school for two semesters. Three children with various levels of Autistic Spectrum Disorders and one child with Down syndrome comprised the art therapy group. Thirty-eight bi-weekly group art therapy sessions were conducted. Qualitative pre and post art therapy measures were utilized. A behavior scale served as the quantitative measure that measured group social skills, positive peer interaction, self-esteem and negative behavior. The results of this research indicated that students with Autistic Spectrum Disorders and Down syndrome improved their socialization skills by taking part in the bi-weekly art therapy sessions.
