Book Synopsis Retooling for an Aging America by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Retooling for an Aging America written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-09-27 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the first of the nation's 78 million baby boomers begin reaching age 65 in 2011, they will face a health care workforce that is too small and woefully unprepared to meet their specific health needs. Retooling for an Aging America calls for bold initiatives starting immediately to train all health care providers in the basics of geriatric care and to prepare family members and other informal caregivers, who currently receive little or no training in how to tend to their aging loved ones. The book also recommends that Medicare, Medicaid, and other health plans pay higher rates to boost recruitment and retention of geriatric specialists and care aides. Educators and health professional groups can use Retooling for an Aging America to institute or increase formal education and training in geriatrics. Consumer groups can use the book to advocate for improving the care for older adults. Health care professional and occupational groups can use it to improve the quality of health care jobs.
Book Synopsis Exploring Child Welfare by : Cynthia Crosson-Tower
Download or read book Exploring Child Welfare written by Cynthia Crosson-Tower and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new edition of Exploring Child Welfare reflects the author's strong practice perspective and incorporates new developments in welfare reform and child welfare services. The text provides a practical and thorough introduction to child welfare and welfare services. The author's strength is her ability to connect the underlying theories and systems of child welfare with real-life practice experience, stemming from over thirty years' experience in working with children and families. This edition was revised in response to feedback from both students and instructors, and includes a new focus on attachment theory and its utilization in child welfare services. The chapter on child abuse and neglect is presented earlier in the text, since it is often the basis of the need for children's services. Material in all chapters has been revised and updated to reflect recent thought and research in the field.

Book Synopsis Managed Care Services by : Nancy W. Veeder
Download or read book Managed Care Services written by Nancy W. Veeder and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2000-12-07 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Managed Care Services explores the complexities of managed health and behavioral health care systems in relation to policy, program, and research issues. It focuses on the dramatic consequences of the transformation of health care delivery from an essential social good to a commodity totally dependent on the marketplace. The book begins with a foreword by James J. Callahan Jr., a leading authority in the field, and includes an interdisciplinary group of authors who address multiple fields of practice. A common theme throughout the book is the inadequacy of service for such high-risk groups as children, the elderly, the mentally ill, the disabled, the chronically ill, substance abusers, and minorities of color. These at-risk groups include, but are not limited to, the vast numbers of un- and underinsured people in the United States. Specific topics covered in the book include cost of access to care; parity of behavioral health care services reimbursement; health services utilization patterns; education of health care professionals and professional autonomy; care management; and ethical issues arising from the structure of managed care administrative and organizational systems. The importance of research, especially program outcome assessments, is also emphasized. Managed Care Services provide a broad overview of "macro" managed care issues and is an invaluable resource for students and professionals interested in the intersection of social work and health care.

Book Synopsis From Child Abuse to Foster Care by : Richard P. Barth
Download or read book From Child Abuse to Foster Care written by Richard P. Barth and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "More than two million child abuse reports are filed annually on behalf of children in the United States. Each of the reported children becomes a concern, at least temporarily, of the professional who files the report, and each family is assessed by additional professionals. A substantial number of children in these families will subsequently enter foster care. Until now, the relationships between the performance of our child welfare system and the growth and outcomes of foster care have not been understood. In an effort to clarify them, Barth and his colleagues have synthesized the results of their longitudinal study in California of the paths taken by children after the initial abuse report: foster care, a return to their homes, or placement for adoption. Because of the outcomes of child welfare services in California have national significance, this is far more than a regional study. It provides a comprehensive picture of children's experiences in the child welfare system and a gauge of the effectiveness of that system. The policy implications of the California study have bearing on major federal and state initiatives to prevent child abuse and reduce unnecessary foster and group home care."--Provided by publisher.
