Book excerpt: The use of recycled coarse concrete aggregates (RCA) for the construction of road and other non-structural concrete has become a common practice these days. With the increasing demand of concrete, there has been an increase in the demand of natural coarse aggregate (NCA), which has sparked the research on the use of recycled coarse aggregate in structural concrete as an alternative sustainable solution. The objective of this study was to produce high strength concrete using recycled coarse aggregates. ACI 211.4R-5 (1998) suggests that concrete yielding compressive strength of over 6000 psi at 28 days of curing can be considered as high strength concrete. Therefore, various concrete mixes containing different amounts of RCA were tested to determine the optimum replacement of NCA with RCA to obtain the targeted compressive strength of 6000 psi at 28 days of curing. The study was divided into two phases. During the first phase, the effect of using recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) and pozzolan such as micro silica fume (MSF) to make high strength concrete was investigated. Due to inconsistent results from this phase of the study, the second phase of the study consisted of reinvestigating the effect of using recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) to make high strength concrete without micro silica fume by narrowly following the recommendations of ACI 211.4R-5 (1998). In addition, Part 2 of this phase consisted of evaluating the effect of the quantity of cement on the compressive strength of RCA concrete compared to the concrete mixes prepared using 100% NCA. This goal of this part of the study was to determine if there is an optimum amount of cement beyond which the strength gain is minimal. In the first phase of this study, five concrete mixes consisting of 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% replacement (by volume) of natural coarse aggregates with recycled concrete coarse aggregates were made using a targeted water to cement (w/c) ratio of 0.4. These mixes were tested after curing periods of 7, 14, and 28 days for compressive strength and after a curing period of 28 days for splitting tensile strength. Also, five additional mixes were prepared and tested using the same mix proportions but using micro silica fume to replace 25% of the portland cement. The results presented show that the addition of micro silica fume (MSF) in all the mixes increases the compressive and tensile strength of the concrete mixes. However, trends of the results from this phase of the study were inconsistent with those available in published literature.. Further scrutiny of the results revealed that the quantity of cement and water used in these mixes were not sufficient for the quantity of aggregates used in the mix designs, thereby, resulting in dry concrete mixes with low slumps causing ambiguities in the results. Therefore, the second phase of the study was initiated which also consisted of two parts. The first part (Part 1) of this phase involved studying the effects of recycled coarse aggregates in concrete, as was done in Phase 1, but the mixes were designed based on the ACI 211.4R-5 (1998) recommendation. Published literature and results from this study show that the recycled coarse aggregates have substantially higher loss of material when subjected to wearing conditions, probably due to weaker cement paste layer and sand particles loosely sticking at the surface. Therefore, during Part 2 of Phase 2 of the study, various quantities of cement i.e., 650 lbs./yd3, 675 lbs./yd3, 700 lbs./yd3 and 725 lbs./yd 3 were used in concrete mixes consisting of 100% RCA and 100% NCA in an effort to determine the optimum amount of cement beyond which there is minimal increase in the compressive strength of concrete made with 100% RCA. The results presented show that as the quantity of cement increases, the strength of the concrete made out of both, the natural and the recycled coarse aggregates increases. It is also observed that while the improvement in strength of the concrete made with 100% natural coarse aggregate increases consistently at about 6% for every additional 25 lbs/yd3 of cement, the rate of increase in the compressive strength of concrete made out of recycled coarse aggregates gradually decreases.

Book excerpt: The depleting sources of natural aggregate and disposal problem of demolished waste have prompted the researchers to take up studies on the use of Recycled Concrete Aggregate (RCA) in structural concrete. The advancement in high rise buildings and the prestressed concrete technology have given impetus for making concrete of high strength. Also, it is well-known from the literature that the use of fibers imparts ductility and high-energy absorption characteristics to concrete. The present work is aimed at determining the suitability of glass and polyester fibers for use in high strength structural Recycled Aggregate Concrete (RAC). Fresh and hardened state properties of fibrous RAC (50% RCA) with glass and polyester fibers are compared with the corresponding fibrous concrete with natural aggregates. The compressive, split tensile and flexural strengths of high strength concrete (compressive strength >50 Mpa) with 0% RCA and 50% RCA increased, as the fiber content increased with maximum values of these strengths at 0.03% of glass fibers, while the optimum polyester fiber content was found to be 0.02%. Plain concrete beams with 0% RCA and 50% RCA failed once the first crack was initiated, but the large deflections of fibrous concrete beams before failure indicated improved ductility of these beams with the addition of glass/polyester fibers.

Book excerpt: Globally, the utilization of concrete particularly high-strength concrete has been increasing day-by-day due to rapid industrialization and infrastructural developments. An enormous quantity of natural coarse aggregate is required for making concrete to meet the huge demand. The natural resources of coarse aggregate are depleting rapidly all over the world and urgently need to be conserved. On the other hand, millions of tonnes of construction and demolition (C&D) wastes are being generated from different sources. Therefore, in the present work, an experimental attempt has been made to utilize the recycled coarse aggregate from C&D waste to the maximum possible extent for producing the high-strength concrete. It obviously solves the problems associated with disposal and environmental impacts of C&D waste and will help conserve the natural resources of aggregates.

Book excerpt: This book describes how, given the global challenge of a shortage of natural resources in the 21st century, the recycling of waste concrete is one of the most important means of implementing sustainable construction development strategies. Firstly, the book presents key findings on the micro- and meso-structure of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC), while the second part focuses on the mechanical properties of RAC: the strength, elastic modulus, Poisson’s ratio, stress-strain curve, etc. The third part of the book explores research on the durability of RAC: carbonization, chloride penetration, shrinkage and creep. It then presents key information on the mechanical behavior and seismic performance of RAC elements and structures: beams, columns, slabs, beam-column joints, and frames. Lastly, the book puts forward design guidelines for recycled aggregate concrete structures. Taken as a whole, the research results – based on a series of investigations the author has condu cted on the mechanical properties, durability and structural performance of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) over the past 10 years – demonstrate that, with proper design and construction, it is safe and feasible to utilize RAC structures in civil engineering applications. The book will greatly benefit researchers, postgraduates, and engineers in civil engineering with an interest in this field.

Book excerpt: Supplies of natural mineral aggregates are diminishing as their usage increases. Disposal problems exist because of steadily increasing accumulation of solid wastes. In light of these two situations an investigation was made to evaluate the use of crushed waste concrete as concrete aggregate. If such use is practical, it will help to alleviate both problems. A discarded concrete driveway that contained siliceous aggregates and a laboratory concrete beam that contained limestone as coarse aggregate and natural siliceous sand as fine aggregate were selected. Portions of each kind of concrete were processed into aggregate sizes. Three test mixtures and two control mixtures were made. Specimens from each round of each mixture were tested for compressive strength at different ages up to six months, for resistance to accelerated freezing and thawing, and for volume changes due to temperature changes or to moisture effects at a constant temperature. The aggregate particles produced by crushing concrete had good particle shape, high absorption, and low specific gravity by comparison with conventional natural mineral aggregates. Other results revealed that use of crushed concrete as aggregate (a) had no significant effect on mixture proportions or workability, (b) resulted in slightly lower compressive strengths, (c) had no significant effect on volume response of specimens to temperature or moisture effects, and (d) resulted in a significant increase in frost resistance when the crushed driveway concrete was used, but essentially no effect on frost resistance when the crushed beam was used.

Fung for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong January 2005 Large amounts of construction and demolition (C&D) material are being generated in Hong Kong, and disposal outlets are rapidly filling up. Recycling has been identified as a viable solution to these problems for the sustainable development of Hong Kong. There is already considerable experience in Europe and Japan in the recycling of old concrete into aggregates for use in new concrete. Based on the Rilem Specification (1994) and the German Guidelines (1998), the HKSAR Government has developed a specification for the use of recycled aggregates in concrete construction, with a maximum content of recycled coarse aggregates of 20% and the strength grade of concrete capped at C 35. Since the pilot recycling plant at Tuen Mun Area 38 commenced operation in July 2002, it has been producing high quality recycled aggregates with water absorption of between 3 and 7% and particle density between 2300 and 2600 kg/m3. Hence there is a case to revisit the existing specification, originally designed for recycled aggregates of lower quality. This study addresses the two main issues in Hong Kong. It considers whether the content of recycled aggregates can be raised without affecting the properties of the new concrete, and whether the requirement to thoroughly wet the recycled aggregates before use can be waived. While strength tests had been carried out to substantiate existing specifications, the durability aspects of the recycled concrete have not been systematically studied. In this study, concrete specimens containing 0%, 20%, 40% and 60% recycled coarse aggregates were prepared and tested for strength, retention of workability, elastic modulus, shrinkage, resistance to chloride penetration, initial surface absorption and carbonation. It was found that the properties of concretes containing different percentages of recycled aggregates did not differ much from those of the control mixes, provided that the effective water/cement ratio was kept constant. Another series of tests was carried out with recycled aggregates of lower quality. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that the maximum content of recycled coarse aggregates be raised to 50% for Grade 30 concrete and below, and to 30% for Grade 35 to Grade 45. Lower replacement levels are suggested for recycled aggregates of lower quality. For workability control, it is recommended that allowance for water absorption should be made in determining the amount of mixing water and that retarders and plasticisers should be used, subject to satisfactory trials. The study also addresses the economic and environmental aspects of recycling. At present, recycled aggregates cannot compete with natural aggregates, but this will change when the disposal charging scheme becomes effective in mid 2005. Confidence in the effectiveness of recycled aggregates remains a problem, however, and will only be overcome by more demonstration projects. Book excerpt: Environmental and economic factors are increasingly encouraging higher value utilization of demolition debris. While the use of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) is confined mainly to low-grade application, it would be more beneficial if high strength concrete (HSC) can be produced with demolished concrete for new concrete construction. Hence, an experimental study was undertaken to explore the feasibility and potential of using field-demolished concrete as full replacement of natural aggregates to produce HSC, as reported in this paper. The workability of fresh concrete and mechanical properties of hardened concrete made with RCAs were investigated. The preliminary results indicated that HSC with up to 80 MPa of 28-day compressive strength made with field-demolished concrete as coarse aggregate and natural sand as fine aggregate can be obtained with the facilitation of a modified mixing method and the addition of silica fume. By providing a general basis for evaluating demolished concrete as aggregates for HSC, the investigation reported herein should contribute significantly to the understanding of recycled aggregate concrete as a viable option in the HSC construction industry.
