Book excerpt: The CSU system (23 Campuses), number of students seeking mental health services on campus increased about 15% over the past two years, while enrollment went up less than 1%. To my knowledge, no previous studies have evaluated the utilization of mental health screenings through the CSUSM Cougar Application(APP) by college students. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to investigate CSUSM students' utilization of mental health screenings through Application (APP)/website technology. This study will set out to investigate the following research questions. To discover a change in students' knowledge of the free mental health screenings. Ho: Students' knowledge of the free mental health did not change.H1: Students' knowledge of the free mental health screenings was improved with the use of the APP. To discover a change in students' utilization and access to free mental health screenings. Ho: Students did not use the App for free mental health screenings. H1: Students did utilize the App for free mental health screenings. To determine if free mental health screenings changed their self-mental health awareness. Ho: The free mental health screenings did not change mental health awareness by using the website. H1: The free mental health screenings improved mental health awareness by using the website. This study collected primary data from de-identified voluntary student participants. A cross-sectional study design was used to assess the utilization of mental health screenings available to CSUSM students. After looking at the results, the study found that CSUSM students are not utilizing mental health screenings. This is mostly due to a lack of adequately marketed health promotion advertisements throughout the university. 57% of non-users learned about the mental health screenings from my questionnaire. Only 84% of 131 users and 0.8% non-users have used mental health screening through the APP. Another relevant and exciting result is that while non-users (99%) have not utilized the mental health screenings in the APP or website, only 17% of non-users have utilized the Student Health and Counseling Services. The university (CSUSM) design and implement a future Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) approach with the student community, specifically including at-risk populations, while factoring in possible COVID-19 specific conditions. The university also should initiate more research/surveys after mental health care is used. After students utilize the Health and Counseling Services and or the APP, students should complete a post-care survey. This data collection could be maintained and evaluated by the ever-growing Masters in Public Health students at CSUSM.

Book excerpt: Mental health issues continue to be a prevalent public health concern amongst the college student population. The lasting effects are often recognizable in the years that follow. It is imperative that researchers gather data during a pandemic and in the aftermath of a pandemic. Doing so ensures that properly informed decisions are made accordingly to address the issues occurring so that a permanent diminution in impact is possible. This paper aims to acknowledge the impact COVID-19 has had on the mental health of college students globally. We examine the numerous impacts that result from COVID-19 on college students. Our findings from the literature highlight the strengths, challenges, and recommended strategies for coping with mental illness during the pandemic. Four domains/themes that were produced based on the literature and its findings were (1) virtual resources, (2) active collaboration, (3) self care, and (4) intervention. We intend to accentuate the existing data so that the urgency for interventions to be implemented develops, diminishing the current impact. Based on the existing data, we have provided a guide to designing a health program that addresses the issues by providing resources, coping strategies, lesson plan interventions, and program marketing. Our curricula emphasize the importance of utilizing data to determine the necessary and fundamental resources and coping mechanisms that could improve and benefit the mental health of college students.

This book was released on 1988 with total page 982 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1982 statistics on the use of family planning and infertility services presented in this report are preliminary results from Cycle III of the National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG), conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics. Data were collected through personal interviews with a multistage area probability sample of 7969 women aged 15-44. A detailed series of questions was asked to obtain relatively complete estimates of the extent and type of family planning services received. Statistics on family planning services are limited to women who were able to conceive 3 years before the interview date. Overall, 79% of currently mrried nonsterile women reported using some type of family planning service during the previous 3 years. There were no statistically significant differences between white (79%), black (75%) or Hispanic (77%) wives, or between the 2 income groups. The 1982 survey questions were more comprehensive than those of earlier cycles of the survey. The annual rate of visits for family planning services in 1982 was 1077 visits /1000 women. Teenagers had the highest annual visit rate (1581/1000) of any age group for all sources of family planning services combined. Visit rates declined sharply with age from 1447 at ages 15-24 to 479 at ages 35-44. Similar declines with age also were found in the visit rates for white and black women separately. Nevertheless, the annual visit rate for black women (1334/1000) was significantly higher than that for white women (1033). The highest overall visit rate was for black women 15-19 years of age (1867/1000). Nearly 2/3 of all family planning visits were to private medical sources. Teenagers of all races had higher family planning service visit rates to clinics than to private medical sources, as did black women age 15-24. White women age 20 and older had higher visit rates to private medical services than to clinics. Never married women had higher visit rates to clinics than currently or formerly married women. Data were also collected in 1982 on use of medical services for infertility by women who had difficulty in conceiving or carrying a pregnancy to term. About 1 million ever married women had 1 or more infertility visits in the 12 months before the interview. During the 3 years before interview, about 1.9 million women had infertility visits. For all ever married women, as well as for white and black women separately, infertility services were more likely to be secured from private medical sources than from clinics. The survey design, reliability of the estimates and the terms used are explained in the technical notes.

Book excerpt: Although numerous studies have focused on understanding the utility of the Behavior Assessment System for Children (BASC; Reynolds & Kamphaus, 2015) across multiple populations, many of the studies that focus on the use of this measure with the college population have used the previous edition (BASC-2). Given the rising rates of anxiety and depression in the college population (Center for Collegiate Mental Health [CCMH], 2020) and the resulting increased risk for negative outcomes such as academic failure, dropout, self-harm, and suicidality (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2013; Bakken, 2021; BlackDeer, 2021), ordinal and binomial logistic regression analyses were used to examine the BASC-3 College Self-Report form (SRP-COL) in predicting mental health and academic outcomes for a sample of full-time college students (N = 136) enrolled in a large university. The Internalizing Problems Composite, specifically the Anxiety subscale, significantly predicted self-reported diagnosis of anxiety and/or depression; however, gender and age were the only statistically significant predictors of college GPA. Practical implications regarding the use of the BASC-3 SRP COL in predicting academic and mental health outcomes for college students, as well as limitations and directions for future research, also are discussed.
