Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of a State: A School History of Utah In the prospectus of this work the author announced his intention to prepare a History of Utah suitable for use in the grammar grades of the public schools. A text book for children, it was to be plain, simple, and direct in diction, a story briefly and tersely told, dealing fairly and impartially with all classes and persons concerned. In fulfillment of that promise, this little volume is sent forth. Of necessity, the historical narrative is very much abridged, yet care has been taken to include all essential facts and features, especially those of a permanent character, educative and elevating in their influence, and closely connected with the founding and development of the State. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular History of Utah It has fallen to my lot to prepare for publication three histories of Utah. The earliest and largest, consisting of four volumes, published in elegant and expensive style, had of necessity but a limited circulation. Nevertheless it may be found in many homes throughout the State, and upon the shelves of leading libraries in various parts of the land. The second history was written at the request of local educators, for use in the grammar grades of the public schools. Prepared in haste to meet an urgent demand, "The Making of a State" did not aim to give a complete presentation of the subject, though all salient points, social, political and industrial, were touched upon in its pages. Controversial matters were purposely omitted, for the sake of good feeling between "Mormon" and "Gentile" children attending those schools. The work now issued represents the realization of a desire to produce a history of Utah complete in a single volume, one that could be sold at such a figure as to place it within the reach of all. Moreover, it was my wish to make clearer certain points imperfectly presented in my first production. The period during which it was compiled - that of the anti-polygamy crusade - was one of strife and turmoil; books and documents had been confiscated or were scattered; and sources of information were not accessible nor so plentiful as they are at the present time. Consequently I labored at a great disadvantage. The difficulty of writing contemporaneous history, amid the heat and stress of happenings involved in the narrative, is one recognized by all intelligent minds. That I have experienced this difficulty, I admit. Never at any time, however, have I purposely misrepresented anybody or anything. I write from the "Mormon" viewpoint, but not as an Anti-"Gentile." I have none but friendly feelings toward all the people of Utah, regardless of sect, party, color, or creed. This is the story of my native State - a record of the facts as I behold them; and "with malice toward none," and "with charity for all," I send it forth upon its mission. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chief Episodes in the History of Utah This little book is a collection of pen pictures of some of the important events in the history of Utah. They are writ ten as they have been told to the children of the schools and to my own little girls who have sat and wondered at the trials and sorrows of their grandfathers and grandmothers. My hope is that they will inspire a love for history in the hearts of the children of this state. Being a grandnephew of the great Mormon leader, Brig ham Young, I have had access to the most important mate rial concerning the Mormon people. I feel a great desire to make use of this material in putting before the world a de tailed study of the Mormons and their work. If the public enjoys these little sketches, I shall feel encouraged to tell at greater length the dramatic story of my people. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Early Utah The glaringly false statements in Whitney's History of Utah respecting the nature and effect of certain occurrences which have in great part gone to make up the history of the State, together with his malignment of the motives of myself and other Gentiles who in the past Opposed the peculiar theocratic and anti-american system established and maintained in Utah while it was a Terri tory by the high priesthood of the Mormon church, are the reasons for the writing of these Reminiscences of my connection with the conflict waged for many years between Mormons and Gentiles. I can vouch for the accuracy of the statements of the facts here given; but whether my observations of the significance of these facts are warranted, the unbiased reader himself must judge. After a careful scrutiny of Whitney's history, I deemed it due the men, many of whom were federal officials and few of whom are yet living, and who have been so wantonly besmirched by him, to correct, at least, some of his erroneous assertions and covert insinuations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Founding of Utah Seventy-five years ago this spring, 1923, the colonists of Utah were clearing the land in the Salt Lake Valley and planting wheat, rye, corn, potatoes, buckwheat, beans, and squash. They had experienced a hard winter, for food was scarce and their clothing hardly enough to keep them warm. But the springtime brought sunshine, hope, and cheer. Everybody went on to the land and worked. Hundreds of immigrants were expected in the summer and autumn, and they would be in need of food. The work of colonizing the Great Basin by the Mormon pioneers had begun. They be gan the conquest of the soil, and, as they conquered, they loved the land more and more. The following account of the founding of Utah is intended to serve as an introduction to the later history of the State. The book, therefore, deals mainly with origins. It is a series of stories headed as chapters which give the principal eco nomic and social factors of our State's early history. The field of Western history has hardly been touched; and the same may be said of Utah history. Our State has passed through all the stages of economic and social life that are common to American civilization. The story of the develop ment of Utah is a story of the conquest of the soil andthe establishing of the institutions of American civilization in this part of the great West. Book excerpt: Excerpt from By Order of the Prophet a Tale of Utah In the fertile valley of Utah, lying in the heart of the Rockies, there is material for a score of books. Some day its full history shall have been written, and with its writing must come a revelation of con ditions that have been well concealed during the three quarters of a century, in which Mormonism has been developing. This book deals with but one phase of that life - it is true in every essential feature, and is in strict accord with established facts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Utah, Its Resources and Attractions, 1901 Strangers to the real wonders of Utah Often find it difficult to accept the most truthful descriptions of them. For instance, many people find it hard to believe that the human body will not sink in the Great Salt Lake, although that fact is demonstrated every day in the summer season at Garfield Beach. Ordinarily it is easy to tell the truth, but when the truth is stranger than fiction, it is sometimes difficult to tell it in a way to carry conviction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Visit to Salt Lake: Being a Journey Across the Plains, and a Residence in the Mormon Settlements at Utah A narrative merely personal, whatever its excesses or defects, hardly stands in need of a preface. It is enough, therefore, as regards the first part of this volume, to say that in it is attempted a picture of the journey across the Plains westward, as made by the emigrant and the cattle-driver. The second part is of a different character, and, from the nature of its subject, may, perhaps, be read with suspicion, or even charged with untruthfulness.
