This history entitled Linebackers of the Sea covers American destroyers that fought in WWII and their heroic crewmen, including many who died in battle. The ships covered in this book generally duplicate those included in Robert Sinclair Parkin's 1995 history entitled Blood on the Sea: American Destroyers Lost in World War II. However, Lubeski does not clarify the exact scope of his book, since some destroyers lost in WWII (e.g., Hull (DD-350), Brownson (DD-518)) do not get included, and other destroyers that fought but did not sink (e.g., Hazelwood (DD-531), Murphy (DD-603)) are included. Most of the 75 destroyers and three other ships in this book have a separate chapter that covers each ship's history. The first half of the book has ships that saw action in the Atlantic, and the last half tells stories of ships in the Pacific. The author writes that he obtained most destroyer histories from Wikipedia with supplements for some ships based on interviews of survivors or their relatives. These firsthand accounts greatly enhance the histories, but only about a third of the destroyers included in the book have personal stories, and a few of these are quite short such as the following one from a survivor of USS Pringle (DD-477), which sank after being hit by a kamikaze aircraft carrying a bomb on April 16, 1945 (p. 151). In Waging War, Planning Peace, Aaron Rapport investigates how U.S. presidents and their senior advisers have managed vital noncombat activities while the nation is in the midst of fighting or preparing to fight major wars. He argues that research from psychology—specifically, construal level theory—can help explain how individuals reason about the costs of postconflict noncombat operations that they perceive as lying in the distant future.In addition to preparations for "Phase IV" in the lead-up to the Iraq War, Rapport looks at the occupation of Germany after World War II, the planned occupation of North Korea in 1950, and noncombat operations in Vietnam in 1964 and 1965. Applying his insights to these cases, he finds that civilian and military planners tend to think about near-term tasks in concrete terms, seriously assessing the feasibility of the means they plan to employ to secure valued ends. Book excerpt: Over 3 million U.S. military personnel were sent to Southeast Asia to fight in the Vietnam War. Since the end of the Vietnam War, veterans have reported numerous health effects. Herbicides used in Vietnam, in particular Agent Orange have been associated with a variety of cancers and other long term health problems from Parkinson's disease and type 2 diabetes to heart disease. Prior to 1997 laws safeguarded all service men and women deployed to Vietnam including members of the Blue Navy. Since then, the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) has established that Vietnam veterans are automatically eligible for disability benefits should they develop any disease associated with Agent Orange exposure, however, veterans who served on deep sea vessels in Vietnam are not included. These "Blue Water Navy" veterans must prove they were exposed to Agent Orange before they can claim benefits. At the request of the VA, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) examined whether Blue Water Navy veterans had similar exposures to Agent Orange as other Vietnam veterans. Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans and Agent Orange Exposure comprehensively examines whether Vietnam veterans in the Blue Water Navy experienced exposures to herbicides and their contaminants by reviewing historical reports, relevant legislation, key personnel insights, and chemical analysis to resolve current debate on this issue.

Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV) said that the war was being won, and that Communist strength in South Vietnam was declining. Then came the Tet Offensive of 1968. In its broadest and simplest outline, the conventional wisdom about the offensive—that it was a military defeat for the Communists but a political victory for them, because it undermined support for the war in the United States—is correct. But much that has been written about the Tet Offensive has been misleading. Edwin Moïse shows that the Communist campaign shocked the American public not because the American media exaggerated its success, but because it was a bigger campaign—larger in scale, much longer in duration, and resulting in more American casualties—than most authors have acknowledged. MACV, led by General William Westmoreland, issued regular estimates of enemy strength in South Vietnam. During 1967, intelligence officers at MACV were increasingly required to issue low estimates to show that the war was being won. Their underestimation of enemy strength was most extreme in January 1968, just before the Tet Offensive. The weak Communist force depicted in MACV estimates would not have been capable of sustaining heavy combat month after month like they did in 1968. Moïse also explores the errors of the Communists, using Vietnamese sources. The first wave of Communist attacks, at the end of January 1968, showed gross failures of coordination. Communist policy throughout 1968 and into 1969 was wildly overoptimistic, setting impossible goals for their forces. While acknowledging the journalists and historians who have correctly reported various parts of the story, Moïse points out widespread misunderstandings in regard to the strength of Communist forces in Vietnam, the disputes among American intelligence agencies over estimates of enemy strength, the actual pattern of combat in 1968, the effects of Tet on American policy, and the American media’s coverage of all these issues.

His journal starts when the Wisconsin departed the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. After transiting the Panama Canal, the Wisconsin steamed to Pearl Harbor and beyond into some of the most important naval engagements of the war. CPO Sullivan saw his ship attacked by Japanese aircraft, including Kamikazes. The Wisconsin bombarded Formosa, Luzon, Okinawa, and the Japanese mainland. Sullivan was there the whole time - 105,831 miles worth and 1,562 sixteen-inch shells fired - from the day the Wisconsin was commissioned until the day she dropped anchor in Tokyo Bay at war's end.
