O estudo de biologia da cultura, conduzido com plantas cultivadas em jarros e diretamente no solo, serviu de base para definicao e caracterizacao do quatro fases, compartimentadas desde a germinacao ate a formacao das espigas, aproximadamente, 70 dias apos. A definicao das fases foi guiada pela serie de eventos biologicos registrados e pelo conhecimento das possiveis especies de pragas que se assinalam na cultura. As fases ficaram assim distribuidas: 1)de 0 a 15 dias; 2)de 15 a 34 dias; 3)de 34 a 47 dias; 4)de 47 a 70 dias. As fases forma combinadas entre si, totalizando l6 situacoes, as quais constituiram os tratamentos. Usando-se um delineamento em blocos a acaso, com cinco repeticoes, projetou-se as fases, segundo as combinacoes estabelecidas, com inseticidas de comprovada eficiencia, de conformidade com as pragas visadas. Deste modo, o carboril foi empregado para controlar lagartas e ma fase de ocorrencia do pulgao aplicou-se monocrotofos. As conclusoes foram discutidas a luz dos dados de producao de graos, custos com defensivos e mao-de-obra e retornoo economico obtido para os diferentes tratamentos.

'Pitiuba', e desenvolveu no Perimetro Irrigado do DNOCS, localizado no municipio de Pentecoste (Ce), um experimento para avaliacao do ataque de pragas segundo as fases da biologia da cultura. Conjugando os resultados obtidos no estudo de biologia, e aliando-se ao conhecimentos dos danos e epocas de ocorrencia de determinadas especies de Insecta que se hospedam na cultura, foram definidas as tres seguintes fases: primeira fase - da germinacao aos 20 dias apos esta; segunda fase - dos 21 dias ao 51 dias, apos a germinacao; terceira fase - dos 51 aos 94 dias, apos a germinacao. No experimento de avaliacao do ataque de pragas, estas fases foram combinadas entre si, e protegidas do ataque das pragas com inseticidas, constituindo-se assim os tratamento. De acordo com a combinacao estabelecida, utilizou-se o inseticida carbaril na primeira fase, e nas demais, o monocrotofos. O delineamento experimental adoatado foi o de blocos ao acaso, com cinco repeticoes e oito tratamentos.
