Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interactive classrooms for distance teaching and learning are part of a new revolution in education. They allow teachers, students and institutions to be linked together in a powerful network so that information can be transmitted rapidly to where it is needed, thereby maimising the use of teaching resources. Importantly, they also offer remote students a 'telepresence' - the feeling of being present in a classroom with a teacher and other students for intellectual and social interaction during the teaching and learning process. This handbook provides a step by step guide to setting up a classroom for telepresence learning. Its comprehensivecoverage includes chapters on testing it works, guidelines for the full range of users, together with troubleshooting and reference sections. There are also detailed case studies of the five distinctive learning scenarios developed by the handbook's pan-European authors, which include sites for teaching remote learners, remote and local learners, group presentation and interaction, a single learner, and a learning centre group. The handbook is a BLUEPRINT, to be read cover to cover, or dipped into for specific information as you strive to set up or fine tune your own version of an interactive classroom for distance teaching and learning.

Subcommittee on Technology and National Security and published by Washington : Superintentent of Documents, Congressional Sales Office. This book was released on 1992 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this hearing was to provide insight into the role of the Federal Government in supporting the development and implementation of the educational technology structure that is needed by elementary and secondary schools. It is argued that what is needed is a broad-based policy agreement about the role that educational technology can play in enhancing student achievement and curriculum development, changing the face of instruction in the classroom, and addressing the challenges of education in the 90s. A brief opening statement by Jeff Bingaman, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Technology and National Security, is followed by statements and, in some cases, submissions for the record, by the following witnesses: (1) Shelly Weinstein, President EDSAT Institute; (2) Jack D. Foster, Cabinet Secretary for Education and the Humanities, Kentucky (statement and report, "Analysis of a Proposal for an Education Satellite"); (3) Donald Ledwig, Corporation for Public Broadcasting (statement and report, "1991 Study of School Uses of Television Video"); (4) Henry J. Cauthen, America's Public Television Stations and South Carolina Educational Television Network; (5) Dennis D. Gooler, North Central Regional Educational Laboratory; (6) Daniel Schultz, Michigan Department of Education (statement and article, "An Inquiry-Centered Classroom of the Future"); (7) Cecilia Lenk, Massachusetts Corporation for Educational Telecommunications (statement and report "Reach for the Stars"); (8) Sally M. Johnstone, Western Cooperative for Educational Telecommunications (statement and article, "Research on Telecommunicated Learning: Past, Present and Future"); (9) Gregory J. Liptak, Mind Extension University; and (10) Gary N. Vance, Satellite Educational Resources Consortium (SERC) on Technology in the Classroom. An opening statement by Strom Thurmond, member of the Subcommittee on Education, Arts, and Humanities, is also included. (DB)

It begins with a brief technical history of some of the different systems, making distinctions between remote sensing, telecommunications and amateur radio satellites. It then examines the uses of satellite technology in the teaching of geography and environmental studies, languages, science and information technology. The book goes on to look at the response of different sectors, including schools and teacher education and higher education establishments, and concludes with a discussion of legal issues and an analysis of the resources needed to realize the impact of satellites on education.

Book excerpt: Space-based observations have transformed our understanding of Earth, its environment, the solar system and the universe at large. During past decades, driven by increasingly advanced science questions, space observatories have become more sophisticated and more complex, with costs often growing to billions of dollars. Although these kinds of ever-more-sophisticated missions will continue into the future, small satellites, ranging in mass between 500 kg to 0.1 kg, are gaining momentum as an additional means to address targeted science questions in a rapid, and possibly more affordable, manner. Within the category of small satellites, CubeSats have emerged as a space-platform defined in terms of (10 cm x 10 cm x 10 cm)- sized cubic units of approximately 1.3 kg each called "U's." Historically, CubeSats were developed as training projects to expose students to the challenges of real-world engineering practices and system design. Yet, their use has rapidly spread within academia, industry, and government agencies both nationally and internationally. In particular, CubeSats have caught the attention of parts of the U.S. space science community, which sees this platform, despite its inherent constraints, as a way to affordably access space and perform unique measurements of scientific value. The first science results from such CubeSats have only recently become available; however, questions remain regarding the scientific potential and technological promise of CubeSats in the future. Achieving Science with CubeSats reviews the current state of the scientific potential and technological promise of CubeSats. This report focuses on the platform's promise to obtain high- priority science data, as defined in recent decadal surveys in astronomy and astrophysics, Earth science and applications from space, planetary science, and solar and space physics (heliophysics); the science priorities identified in the 2014 NASA Science Plan; and the potential for CubeSats to advance biology and microgravity research. It provides a list of sample science goals for CubeSats, many of which address targeted science, often in coordination with other spacecraft, or use "sacrificial," or high-risk, orbits that lead to the demise of the satellite after critical data have been collected. Other goals relate to the use of CubeSats as constellations or swarms deploying tens to hundreds of CubeSats that function as one distributed array of measurements.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this text is to further flesh out some of the factors--specific dimensions of our n-dimensional hyperspace--important to inquiry in the classroom. As such, some of the of the factors have already been introduced, others will be new to the conversation. In our discussions that lead to the preparation of this manuscript, it became clear that each of us was interested in classroom inquiry, and so we each wanted to situate our analysis in these classrooms. For that purpose, our discussions are organized into sections. Each section begins with one (or more) vignette--snippets of science classrooms--that the authors then discuss how this vignette demonstrates some aspect of the specific dimension that they are charged with discussing. Because inquiry is so multifaceted and its portrayals are often complex and nuanced, the discussion of the dimension is broken into separate essays--each of which addresses the focal dimension in different ways. Following the essay, a broader discussion across the essays is offered to support your sense making. As we began this effort, we selected what we understood to be the most influential dimensions of inquiry in the classroom. But certainly there are others that can and should have been included, (i.e., the role of curriculum in supporting (or confining) the enactment of inquiry, the manner in which inquiry can shape students' knowledge, the role systemic efforts can have in enabling inquiry). But given the confines of one text, we've chosen what we understood to be the central components, and these have been arranged into 6 sections. Our vision is that each of these sections can be self-supporting, so their appearance in the text doesn't represent the order in which they must be read. Ideally, the reader would engage in the introduction, then select the section that addresses the dimension influencing classroom inquiry that is of greatest importance. The only exception to this is section 6, which is a specific form of enactment of classroom inquiry; engagement with this section may be best augmented after reading the sections that interest you.

Technology-based Inquiry offers fresh approaches that you and your students can use to explore physical science, Earth and space science, life science, and more. It covers the necessary skills to get hands-on experience with graphing calculators, calculator-based labs (CBL), personal digital assistants (PDA), global positioning systems (GPS), graphical information systems (GIS), and other emerging technologies. Each chapter provides a list of online resources including where to purchase these devices, where to download programs (often at no cost), and where students can go to conduct further research. But never fear, you won't need a PhD to use this book. The articles are written in a non-threatening style and translate technology-based instructional processes into simple classroom applictaions. The practical tone makes this collection beneficial to in-service science teachers as well as pre-professionals taking methods courses. Inquiry-Based Inquiry will give you the confidence that comes with deeper understanding of how to use the latest technology to increase science learning.
