Book excerpt: The first step in selecting the optimal rehabilitation strategy for any pavement is to identify the cause of the existing defects. In recent years nondestructive technologies such as Falling Weight Deflectometers and Ground Penetrating Radar have been used to evaluate subsurface conditions. However when used independently these technologies are not always adequate for identifying the cause of pavement deterioration. This paper will present the argument for developing an integrated approach to pavement evaluation wherein the high speed GPR survey results can be used to identify homogenous sections, locate potential subsurface defects and estimate layer thicknesses. The GPR then provides critical inputs to both the processing of the FWD data and the interpretation of the results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the fourth year of Project 0-6005, construction of the Total Pavement Acceptance Device (TPAD) was completed. The TPAD is a multi-function pavement evaluation device used to profile continuously along pavements at speeds in the range of 2 to 5 mph. The test functions include those associated with a Rolling Dynamic Deflectometer (RDD), ground penetrating radar (GPR), Distance Measurement Instrument (DMI), high-precision differential Global Positioning System (GPS), surface temperature and digital video imaging of the pavement, and right-of-way conditions. The towing frame system used to position and pull the RDD rolling sensors was developed and installed on the TPAD. The towing frame system minimizes the transmission of vibrations from the TPAD mobile platform and loading system to the rolling sensors, and allows for the incorporation of three rolling sensors (front, center, and rear) on the TPAD. The front and rear rolling sensors have 12.5-in. diameter wheels and a 90-lb hold-down weight while the center rolling sensor has 9.5-in. diameter wheels and a 40-lb hold-down weight. Initial deflection measurements using the new towing frame/sensor cart arrangement were performed at the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Flight Services Facility (FSF).

This book was released on 1986 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of a jointed, reinforced concrete pavement with groundpenetrating radar indicated that the equipment provides a nondestructive inspection technique that can be used at a minimum rate of 5 lane miles of pavement per hour and with only minimal interference with traffic. The coring of some slabs and subsequent use of a devised water test revealed that the radar was very effective in detecting voids deeper than 1/8 in but considerably less .effective in spotting shallow voids. The overall accuracy was approximately 68%, which indicates that the sensitivity of the equipment needs to be improved. The location component used with the radar unit showed insufficient accuracy. A regression analysis of the recorded quantities of grout used daily in subsealing portions of the pavement versus the total linear feet of vbids detected underneath the slabs grouted each day yielded only a 51% correlation. However, the regression was found to be significant at a 95% probability level. It is believed that if the width and depth of each void can be conveniently estimated so that the extent of voids can be expressed in terms of volume instead of length only, an even more successful method of estimating grout quantities would be available. It has been shown that information derived from a radar survey can be very useful in developing a sound and cost-effective slab stabilization operation through the proper placement of grout holes.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to summarize existing nondestructive test methods that have the potential to be used to detect materials-related distress (MRD) in concrete pavements. The various nondestructive test methods were then subjected to selection criteria that helped to reduce the size of the list so that specific techniques could be investigated in more detail. The main test methods that were determined to be applicable to this study included two stress-wave propagation techniques (impact-echo and spectral analysis of surface waves techniques), infrared thermography, ground penetrating radar (GPR), and visual inspection. The GPR technique was selected for a preliminary round of "proof of concept" trials. GPR surveys were carried out over a variety of portland cement concrete pavements for this study using two different systems. One of the systems was a state-of-the-art GPR system that allowed data to be collected at highway speeds. The other system was a less sophisticated system that was commercially available. Surveys conducted with both sets of equipment have produced test results capable of identifying subsurface distress in two of the three sites that exhibited internal cracking due to MRD. Both systems failed to detect distress in a single pavement that exhibited extensive cracking. Both systems correctly indicated that the control pavement exhibited negligible evidence of distress. The initial positive results presented here indicate that a more thorough study (incorporating refinements to the system, data collection, and analysis) is needed. Improvements in the results will be dependent upon defining the optimum number and arrangement of GPR antennas to detect the most common problems in Iowa pavements. In addition, refining high frequency antenna response characteristics will be a crucial step toward providing an optimum GPR system for detecting materials related distress.

Book excerpt: The research project objective was to develop an implementation strategy for the use of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) technology to address pavement systems and underground utilities. The project was divided into three tasks. Task 1 dealt with a review in the state-of-the-art in technology, relevant applications, and regulations in the use of GPR. Task 2 discussed the effort and results of GPR survey projects on pavements systems and underground utilities that were performed as part of this project in selected locations. Task 3 developed an implementation strategy for NYSDOT for defining and procuring GPR services in addressing problems in pavement systems and mapping & locating underground utilities.

The TPAD will be a multi-function device that will be used to profile continuously along pavements at speeds in the range of 5 to 10 mph. The test functions will include those associated with Rolling Dynamics Deflectometer (RDD), ground penetrating radar (GPR), Distance Measurement Instrument (DMI) and high-precision differential Global Positioning System (GPS), and surface temperature measurements, as well as digital video imaging of the pavement and right-of-way conditions. The specifications, bid documents, bid acceptances, and purchase of the TPAD mobile platform and the TPAD transportation equipment (tractor and trailer) were completed by the University of Texas Center for Transportation Research team. Construction of the TPAD is well underway and the acceptance testing will be done in early Year 3. Progress was also made in developing (1) improved rolling sensors and associated data analysis methods commensurate with the target testing speeds and (2) a second generation integrated data acquisition and display system which records all test functions on the same time and distance baselines.

The new feature in this analysis is that point-specific layer thickness estimates from the GPR can be used within the layer backcalculation process. Most of the features of the existing COLORMAP and MODULUS programs have been incorporated into PAVECHECK. This report provides a user's manual for the new program.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents the research performed on evaluation of equipment for measuring voids under portland cement concrete pavements. The following equipment was evaluated based on field tests conducted by several State DOT's: proof roller, the Benkelman Beam, Dynaflect, falling weight deflectometer (FWD), ground-penetrating radar (GPR) equipment developed by Gulf Applied Radar and Donohue & Associates Inc., and transient dynamic response (TDR) equipment. The devices were evaluated through information obtained from a literature search, synthesis of field test data provided by the States and additional telephone contacts conducted for this study. The field tests were performed on PCC pavements in these States during undersealing projects. Records of grout quantity were the prime source to verify voids. Cores and, in some cases, lifting of the entire PCC slabs provided further evidence of the presence of voids.
