To analyze these algal blooms, standard multispectral techniques (such as band ratio, spectral curvature and principal component analysis) were used on the airborne data. Book excerpt: Remote sensing instruments are powerful tools for discriminating between color producing agents (CPAs) that comprise the complex optical signal of Lake Erie. The western basin of Lake Erie (WBLE) is affected by annually recurring cyanobacteria and harmful algal blooms (CyanoHABs), which impact water quality, industry and tourism. In addition to cyanobacteria and algae, sediment and colored dissolved organic material contribute to the optical reflectance signal of Lake Erie waters. CyanoHABs are driven by nutrient input from the Maumee River, and grow in size from spring to fall. Due to the potential of cyanobacteria to produce toxins detrimental to humans and wildlife, identification of the constituents in the CyanoHABs is vital. Both airborne and satellite-based remote sensing instruments provide detailed spectral and spatial information at different scales, and are effective tools for assessing CyanoHABs in Lake Erie.Four images acquired in July of the 2015 CyanoHAB by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), onboard the NASA Aqua satellite, are analyzed using the Kent State Varimax-rotated principal component analysis (VPCA) spectral decomposition method. MODIS provides basin-wide imagery with a 1 km2 pixel resolution. Four primary signals were extracted, identifying the CyanoHAB signal, a clay sediment and chlorophyll degradation product signal, a hematite and chlorophyll a signal, and a cryptophya signal. The results of the VPCA spectral decomposition of the MODIS showed good agreement with both in situ measured chlorophyll a values in the WBLE, and with the VPCA spectral decomposition results of the reflectance spectra of field samples measured in the lab.The HyperSpectral Imager v2 (HSI2) is an airborne instrument operated by a research team at NASA Glenn, and flown during the 2016 CyanoHAB season. Four images collected on 21 June 2016 and three images collected on 13 September 2016 were analyzed. These two sets of images are of near shore waters in the WBLE, Sandusky Bay, and the Maumee River mouth, and allow comparison of early, pre-bloom, conditions with late bloom conditions. The HSI2 sensor images have a pixel resolution of ~3 m2. This spatial resolution, coupled with hyperspectral band resolution provides detailed results of the spatial distribution of CPAs. A component associated with illite and diatoms was identified, and primarily visible in the images from 21 June 2016, while a component associated with the CyanoHAB signal was primarily visible in the images from 13 September 2016.The 2015 MODIS imagery analysis highlighted a clay sediment and chl- degradation product signal located in the discharge plumes of WBLE tributaries, but was very small in the Maumee River discharge area. The chl-degradation product is associated with colored-dissolved organic matter (CDOM). Wetlands produce and export high amounts of CDOM. An analysis of watershed land use/land cover characteristics was conducted to assess the connections between area of wetlands and the area of CDOM identified by the VPCA spectral decomposition results. This preliminary investigation indicates that the location of the wetland in relation to the watershed outlet plays a role in CDOM presence in the WBLE.

While some of the rapid and simpler techniques can be used instead of more involved techniques, sometimes use of several techniques together is beneficial for managing aquatic ecosystems and protecting human health. Algorithms were developed to quantify chlorophyll a using five remote sensing sensors including three currently operational satellite sensors and two popular sensors onboard the Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs). Book excerpt: Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) are natural phenomena that can have negative impacts on marine ecosystems on which human health and the economy of some Gulf States depends. Many of the HABs in the GOM are dominated by the toxic dinoflagellate Karenia brevis. Non-toxic phytoplankton taxa such as Scrippsiella sp. also form intense blooms off the Mexican coast that result in massive fish mortality and economic losses, particularly as they may lead to anoxia. The main objectives of this dissertation were to (1) evaluate and improve the techniques developed for detection of Karenia spp. blooms on the West Florida Shelf (WFS) using satellite remote sensing methods, (2) test the use of these methods for waters in the GOM, and (3) use the output of these techniques to better understand the dynamics and evolution of Karenia spp. blooms in the WFS and off Mexico. The first chapter of this dissertation examines the performance of several Karenia HABs detection techniques using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite images and historical ground truth observations collected on the WFS from August 2002 to December 2011. A total of 2323 in situ samples collected by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute to test for Karenia spp. matched pixels with valid ocean color satellite observations over this period. This dataset was used to systematically optimize variables and coefficients used in five published HAB detection methods. Each technique was tested using a set of metrics that included the F-Measure (FM). Before optimization, the average FM for all techniques was 0.47. After optimization, the average FM increased to 0.59, and false positives decreased ~50%. The addition of a Fluorescence Line Height (FLH) criterion improved the performance of every method. A new practical method was developed using a combination of FLH and Remote Sensing Reflectance at 555 nm (Rrs555-FLH).

Book excerpt: In the last few decades, harmful algal blooms (HABs, also known as “red tides”) have become one of the most detrimental natural phenomena all around the world especially in Florida’s coastal areas due to local environmental factors and global warming in a larger scale. Karenia brevis produces toxins that have harmful effects on humans, fisheries, and ecosystems. In this study, I developed and compared the efficiency of state-of-the-art machine learning models (e.g., XGBoost, Random Forest, and Support Vector Machine) in predicting the occurrence of HABs. In the proposed models, the K. brevis abundance is used as the target, and 10 level-02 ocean color products extracted from daily archival MODIS satellite data such as Euphotic Depth (m)and Secchi disk depth, Chlorophyll-a (mg/m3), Diffuse attenuation coefficient (Kd_490;m−1), Sea surface temperature (C°) , Fluorescence line-height, ... are used as controlling factors. The adopted approach addresses two main shortcomings of earlier models: (1) the paucity of satellite data due to cloudy scenes and (2) the lag time between the period at which a variable reaches its highest correlation with the target and the time the bloom occurs. Eleven spatio-temporal models were generated, each from three consecutive day satellite datasets, with a forecasting span from one to 11 days. The 3-day models addressed the potential variations in lag time for some of the temporal variables. One or more of the generated 11 models could be used to predict HAB occurrences depending on availability of the cloud-free consecutive days. Findings indicate that XGBoost outperformed the other methods, and the forecasting models of 5–9 days achieved the best results. The most reliable model can forecast eight days ahead of time with balanced overall accuracy, Kappa coefficient, F-Score, and AUC of 96%, 0.93, 0.97, and 0.98 respectively. The euphotic depth, sea surface temperature, and chlorophyll-a are always among the most significant controlling factors. The proposed models could potentially be used to develop an “early warning system” for HABs in southwest Florida.

In 2014, this resulted in the plant having to shut down its intake after toxic cyanotoxins were found in source water. Such occurrences are becoming more common across the globe. U.S. EPA has established regulations for microcystin, the most common form of cyanotoxin. Climate change is predicted to increase the occurrence of other types of cyanotoxins, such as saxitoxins, which are not regulated by the U.S. EPA. Hence, the removal and monitoring of cyanotoxins, produced by harmful algae blooms, in water is of utmost importance to protect public health.The efficacy of oxidation varies greatly for each of the cyanotoxins due to their different chemical structures. There is presently no oxidation process that a water treatment plant can implement that is proven to simultaneously remove all the cyanotoxins (microcystin, saxitoxin, cylindrospermopsin, and anatoxin) from drinking water. Thus, water treatment plants that are currently designed to remove microcystins are not protected against all forms of cyanotoxins. The investigation of the removal of these cyanotoxins using innovative treatment technologies requires a detection method that is sensitive and capable of detecting all the variants of cyanotoxins. The detection of saxitoxin is particularly challenging as compared to other cyanotoxins due to its low molecular mass and highly polar nature. Hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (HILIC-MS) has the ability to provide specific detection through mass differentiation, which makes it an ideal tool for the quantitative analysis of saxitoxin and its variants. Hence, a method was developed to extract and detect saxitoxin from water using HILIC-MS in conjunction with weak cation exchange solid phase extraction (SPE), to provide a sensitive and reliable quantification of saxitoxins. However, the application of LC/MS for the detection of cyanotoxins in treatment studies is not cost effective as the cost of instrumentation is high, its operation requires high skill, and cyanotoxin standards have limited access and are expensive. Hence, a screening technique has been developed which uses methylene blue to identify the reaction kinetics of persulfate and peroxide oxidation in the presence of ferrous chloride and to optimize parameters, which can be helpful in predicting the degradation of cyanotoxins under similar conditions. Catalyst activated persulfate and peroxide oxidation produce sulfate and hydroxyl radicals, which can degrade a wide range of recalcitrant chemicals and hence are preferred in water and wastewater treatment. The screening technique was validated by investigating the degradation of microcystin-LR. The notable advantages of developing this screening technique are: (i) reduced cost of analysis as methylene blue can be detected in real time by measuring its absorbance, and (ii) can perform multiple trials in short time due to ease of analysis. This screening technique was also applied to iron oxide coated ceramic membranes in combination with persulfate oxidation to understand the degradation kinetics.

Book excerpt: The study of harmful algal blooms is a well-established field with several conventional approaches such as processing samples, field observations, and examining weather and environmental effects that could change how the algae develop. However, with the frequency and severity of these blooms increasing worldwide, it has become progressively tougher to properly and efficiently assess their development and spread with the limited resources available. Therefore, assessment of the severity of algal blooms through remote sensing is helpful, especially since data from satellite imagery is already widely available for public use. Subjective judgments of existing data could yield additional human expertise that could be used in conjunction with the existing biology of bloom development to provide a more efficient framework to base future studies from. What is introduced in this dissertation is the development of a deductive technique based on a combination of fuzzy fault tree analysis and artificial neural network image recognition, utilizing readily available data from already well-established remote sensing equipment. The main advantage of this is that it could provide results that are just as accurate and yet could accept far more flexible inputs not as dependent on strict boundaries regarding lake conditions to compensate for limitations in gathering a priori knowledge. At the same time, the process is highly customizable and user-oriented, so that an assessor utilizing the interface need not necessarily have a comprehensive understanding of the underlying logic to interpret the results accordingly. Testing the interface and procedure on actual data arising from in situ sampling and satellite imagery through the fuzzy fault tree and convolutional neural network proved to give rise to accurate and logically consistent results, with the assessment of conditions arising from the fault tree consistent with the initial factors; the neural network also achieved a high degree of accuracy, able to deduce the state of a satellite image based on specific factors with an 80 – 100% validation rate. To this end, this process is a new way of approaching the problem of assessing harmful algal blooms, a foundation upon which newer techniques that could supplement and validate more conventional approaches could be based upon.
