Book excerpt: Groundwater discharge into estuaries and the coastal ocean is an important mechanism for the transport of dissolved chemical species to coastal waters. Because many dissolved species are present in groundwater in concentrations that are orders of magnitude higher than typical river concentrations, groundwater-borne nutrients and pollutants can have a substantial impact on the chemistry and biology of estuaries and the coastal ocean. However, direct fluxes of groundwater into the coastal ocean (submarine groundwater discharge, or SGD) can be difficult to quantify. Geochemical tracers of groundwater discharge can reflect the cumulative SGD flux from numerous small, widely dispersed, and perhaps ephemeral sources such as springs, seeps, and diffuse discharge. The natural radiocarbon content (DELTA 14C) of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) was developed as a tracer of fresh, terrestrially driven fluxes from confined aquifers. This DELTA 14C method was tested during five sampling periods from November 1999 to April 2002 in two small estuaries in southeastern North Carolina. In coastal North Carolina, fresh water artesian discharge is characterized by a low DELTA 14C signature acquired from the carbonate aquifer rock. Mixing models were used to evaluate the inputs from potential sources of DIC-DELTA 14C to each estuary, including seawater, springs, fresh water stream inputs, and salt marsh respiration DIC additions. These calculations showed that artesian discharge dominated the total fresh water input to these estuaries during nearly all sampling periods. These new DELTA 14C-based SGD estimates were compared with groundwater flux estimates derived from radium isotopes and from radon-222. It is clear that these tracers reflect different components of the total SGD. This multi-tracer approach provides a comprehensive assessment of the various components contributing to the total SGD.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Quantifying the freshwater component of submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) is critical in the analysis of terrestrial influences on marine ecosystems and in assessing the water budget of coastal aquifers. In semi-arid to arid settings, this quantification is difficult because low SGD rates translate into low concentrations of groundwater solutes in coastal waters. In this study, fresh SGD (FSGD) was quantified for Toyon Bay on Catalina Island, California, for wet and dry seasons using a combination of radon and salinity mass balance models, and the results were compared to the watershed-specific groundwater recharge rates obtained from a soil water balance (SWB) model. Calculated FSGD rates vary with season (high in spring, low in fall) and fall short of the modeled recharge rates by a factor of up to 7. While sensitivity analyses revealed FSGD estimates to be significantly influenced by uncertainties in geochemical variability of the groundwater end-member and fluctuations of water depth, the results of this study do not support the SWB model-based recharge rates. The findings of this study highlight the utility of the radon and salinity mass balance-based FSGD estimates as groundwater recharge calibration targets, which may aid in the establishment of more refined sustainable groundwater yields.

Book excerpt: Abstract.--We constructed a survey system of radon/methane/nitrate/salinity to find sites of submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) and groundwater nitrate input. We deployed the system in Waquoit Bay and Boston Harbor, MA where we derived SGD rates using a mass balance of radon with methane serving as a fine resolution qualitative indicator of groundwater. In Waquoit Bay we identified several locations of enhanced groundwater discharge, out of which two (Childs and Quashnet Rivers) were studied in more detail. The Childs River was characterized by high nitrate input via groundwater discharge, while the Quashnet River SGD was notable but not a significant source of nitrate. Our radon survey of Boston Harbor revealed several sites with significant SGD, out of these Inner Harbor and parts of Dorchester Bay and Quincy Bay had groundwater fluxes accompanied by significant water column nitrogen concentrations. The survey system has proven effective in revealing areas of SGD and non-point source pollution.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled ESTIMATION OF SUBMARINE GROUNDWATER DISCHARGE INTO TOLO HARBOUR Submitted by KIU CHUNG TSE for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in August 2006 The ecological impact of algal blooms in Tolo Harbour has received much attention. Nutrients such as N, P and Si are consented to be the limiting factors for algal blooms. This study aims to quantify the submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) flux discharging to Tolo Harbour and ultimately, to assess the ecological consequence of nutrient input through this underground route. SGD is assessed by radium isotopes and radon in this study. In 2005, seawater samples were collected for radium isotopic analysis in March and October, while a site in Plover Cove was selected for radon analysis in July 222 during the neap tide and spring tide periods. Temporal distributions of Rn 224 and Ra show an inverse relationship with the tidal height, which are 224 believed to reflect the tidal effects on SGD. Spatial distribution of Ra shows a prominent decreasing trend with distance offshore except for a site in Sha Tin Hoi, where SGD as the form of submarine groundwater spring is 224 suspected to exist at the bifurcation of two faults. Enrichment of Ra nearshore was speculated to be attributed to rivers and SGD. Based on the 224 Ra data, the residence time of radium in Tolo Harbour was estimated to be 46 days. Direct measurement by seepage meter in Plover Cove gives an average value of 0.08 m/day, which is very consistent with the SGD flux estimated by 222 Rn with SGD fluid represented by groundwater sample from Chim Uk private well (0.06 m/day). For a seepage area of 200 m x 3000 m in Plover 4 3 Cove, the volumetric SGD would be 3.6-4.8 x 10 m /day. In the Ra isotopes 4 3 approach, the volumetric SGD were estimated to be 6.87 x 10 m /day for 5 3 March and 1.53 x 10 m /day for October. Approximate estimate from water balance calculation places the value of terrestrial groundwater discharge to be 4 3 3.56 x 10 m /day. Nutrients in groundwater around Tolo Harbour were measured. Estimates of nutrient loading through the pathway of SGD ranged from 0 to 29.1 kg/day for nitrite, 32 to 2326 kg/day for nitrate and 0 to 71.9 kg/day for phosphate. 226 228 Limitations of this study mainly come from Ra and Ra data in which standards were not available for calibration. In radon analysis, there are two 222 abnormal Rn values which remain unexplainable. Also, the technique to install the seepage meter is still subject to improve. On the other hand, groundwater data are too sparse to represent the SGD fluid reasonably. Despite of the limitations, nutrient loading on Tolo Harbour through the pathway of SGD is doubtless significant. Unfortunately groundwater quality has been overlooked by the government in the management of red tides in Hong Kong. Based on the result from this study, the current practice for the management of red tides in Hong Kong has to be reviewed and the control measures of groundwater contamination are obviously required. Book excerpt: The book provides a review of experimental methods and presents the worldwide newest literature regarding chemical substances fluxes via submarine groundwater discharge (SGD). Thus, the book characterizes both the distribution of chemicals in groundwater impacted areas in the Baltic Sea and their fluxes via SGD to the Baltic Sea. This book presents the state of art regarding the SGD and detailed studies on SGD characterization in the Baltic Sea. The Baltic Sea is an example of a region highly influenced by a variety of human activities that affect the ecosystem. It is shown that SGD has been proven to be one of the important sources introducing dissolved substances into the Baltic Sea. The loads of chemical substances delivered to the Baltic sea with SGD have not been quantified so far.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent studies have provided evidence that submarine groundwater discharge is a signifi cant source of water and dissolved nutrients to the coastal ocean. The chemical implications of these studies are especially important because, relative to surface water, groundwater is typically enriched in many compounds including nitrogen bearing nutrients. Therefore by affecting the supply and relative proportions of essential nutrients, direct groundwater discharge has the potential to influence phytoplankton populations and estuarine ecosystems as a whole. Another potential submarine discharge that may occur in the shallow restricted waters of the Texas coast is leakage of oil-field brine. Such leakage also has important ecological implications similar in some ways to groundwater discharge. The studies in this dissertation concern improving the methods and techniques used in measuring submarine discharges. Using the Texas Coastal Bend as a study area I have: 1) conducted a detailed evaluation of submarine discharges to Nueces Bay and 2) compared indications of submarine discharge between Nueces, Baffin, and Copano Bays. These investigations use a combination of geochemical and geophysical techniques. The geochemical methods are based primarily on measurements of naturally-occurring dissolved Ra isotopes in samples of bay, river, ocean, and groundwater. The geophysical methods employ electrical resistivity profiling to look for evidence of groundwater movement within the bay bottom sediments. Results show that dissolved radium concentrations within Nueces Bay are among the highest observed in coastal estuaries. Geochemical analysis and geophysical surveys indicate that both groundwater and leakage of oil-field brine are potential submarine inputs. Samples from Nueces, Copano, and Baffin Bays show that the seasonal increase in dissolved 226Ra activity for Nueces Bay is substantially larger than that of the other two bays. This increase is not readily explained by either evaporation or riverine supply. These results clearly suggest that the Ra supply to Nueces Bay is unusually large. For Nueces Bay, the most relevant differences between the three bays that might account for this are 1) the proportionally larger salt marsh and 2) the higher density of petroleum wells and pipelines. Though submarine groundwater discharge is not to be ruled out, leakage of oil-field brine is strongly indicated.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The difference in activities of these two end members should make 222Rn a good tracer for surface-ground water mixing in karst areas. Activities of 222Rn were measured to depths of 8 and 10 m at two sinkholes (Vinzants Landing and River Rise) and indicated that 222Rn is heterogeneous in the sinkholes. Water samples were collected from the River Sink, River Rise, and karst windows between the Sink and Rise from May 2002 to April 2003. These samples encompass drought, base flow, and flood stages. As the river stage rises to flood conditions (approx. 11.51 masl) the excess 222Rn activities decrease from approximately approx. 100 dpm/L to less than 25 dpm/L, indicating that no matrix water enters the conduit; and that the conduit is filled with 222Rn-poor surface water from the Santa Fe River.
