Book excerpt: The purpose of this correlational study was to examine Georgia's Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) scores of 8th grade students and End of Course Test (EOCT) scores of the same students as 9th graders in the areas of language arts and mathematics to test the theory that a relationship exists between the two tests. The study also examined the 8th grade CRCT scores as being predictors of the 9th grade EOCT scores. Three cycles, or classes, of 8th grade CRCT scores and corresponding EOCT scores were used. The study used data from a small semi-rural school district in northeast Georgia. The findings indicate that there is a strong relationship between the 8th grade CRCTs and the 9th grade EOCTs. Further, the CRCTs may be used as a predictor for the EOCT.

This book was released on 2024-05-10 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most students who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) struggle with acquiring literacy skills, some as a direct result of their hearing loss, some because they are receiving insufficient modifications to access the general education curriculum, and some because they have additional learning challenges necessitating significant program modifications. This second edition of Literacy Instruction for Students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing updates previous findings and describes current, evidence-based practices in teaching literacy to DHH learners. Beal, Dostal, and Easterbrooks provide educators and parents with a process for determining which literacy and language assessments are appropriate for individual DHH learners and whether an instructional practice is supported by evidence or causal factors. They describe the literacy process with an overview of related learning theories, language and literacy assessments, and evidence-based instructional strategies across the National Reading Panel's five areas of literacy instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The volume includes evidence-based writing strategies and case vignettes that highlight application of assessments and instructional strategies within each of these literacy areas. Crucially, it reviews the remaining challenges related to literacy instruction for DHH learners. Educators and parents who provide literacy instruction to DHH learners will benefit from the breadth and depth of literacy content provided in this concise literacy textbook.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Guide to Choosing Your Children's Schools & Monitoring Their School Experiences is a must read for all current and prospective parents, ideally before their children reach school age. It will help them plan ahead to ensure successful educational experience for their children. The first part of the book draws attention to various factors parents should, but do not always, consider that affect their children's education. For example, what school is best for my child: Public or private; Charter, County or City school? Where you buy a home may take these choices out of your hands! The book challenges parents to use readily available information in print and on the internet, regarding school academic history, location, resources, curriculum and extra-curricular offerings, to plan ahead. It encourages parents to make deliberate choices that would position their children in the neighborhoods that would place them in the best schools. The second part of the book argues for, and illustrates, why parents should closely monitor their children's experiences from pre-school through high school, even in the best of schools. The book concludes with suggestions on various ways parents can forge effective partnerships with the school/teacher to facilitate a successful experience for their children/ward.
