Book excerpt: Using hermeneutic and heuristic inquiry, this thesis asked the question: Can the benefits of dance therapy be transferred and utilized as a catalyst to encourage healthy goals and aspirations in Mexican American youth? Areas of literature explored included self-esteem, dance therapy, somatic therapy, Mexican American culture and trauma, and neuroscience. In the findings, depth psychology was used as the guiding principle to discuss the author's experience of transformation through dance/movement therapy and its application to other populations. Clinical applications of dance/movement therapy were based on neuroscientific investigations of the mind-body connection, the organic benefits of dance, and the role of dance in transformation, and this form of therapy was suggested as an add-on tool for therapists. The use of dance/movement therapy as a form of mind-body connection therapy was supported for physical and emotional healing, and additional research was suggested.

In so doing, the traumatic experience becomes repressed, perhaps in an effort to cover up the pain that is suffered. One of the traumas that unfortunately exist is child sexual abuse. A child is suddenly ripped of his self-esteem and feeling of well-being. During my experience as a dance/movement therapist, it has been revealed through movement, that more than half my clients were victims of child sexual abuse. Since the sexual abuse took place on a bodily level, it was therefore contacted and acknowledged on the same level-through movement, even when the client was unable to verbalize or even recall the experience. The purpose of this study is to discover the impact that movement, more specifically, Dance/Movement Therapy has on the adolescent and how it helps him/her to regain the self-esteem that was lost as a result of being a victim of child sexual abuse.

The objective of this study was to determine if Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) with females struggling with relational issues with their paternal figure contributed to improved self esteem, body image, and communication skills. The literature review describes dance movement therapy, aspects of self-esteem, body image, dance movement therapy used with specific populations, fundamentals of group work, and movement therapy techniques used with adolescents. Methods of the study were presented with the use of eight movement therapy interventions. The instrument and participants were also described. The results were evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively through pre and post test results and observations. Results indicated that DMT was an effective therapeutic technique in a school setting. The discussion also describes areas for additional research and implications for future research.
