Book excerpt: This study was conducted in order to determine if there are any progress monitoring probes through Curriculum Based Measurement that are predictors of reading achievement on the Development Reading Assessment. The reading probes include; Letter Naming Fluency (LNF), Letter Sound Fluency (LSF), Phoneme Segmentation Fluency (PSF), Nonsense Word Fluency (NWF), and Reading Fluency (RCBM). The data was retrieved from a rural school district in Missouri. It consisted of four first grade classrooms of about 100 students total. Though no studies have been identified that measure reading probes as predictors for reading achievement, some current literature and research indicates that word reading and reading fluency has a strong relationship to overall reading ability. The Results of a Regression Analysis performed with the group of first graders indicates that the Reading Fluency (RCBM) probe is both very strong and accurate, with high relative value, making it a significant predictor of reading achievement. The other probes consisting of Letter Naming Fluency (LNF), Letter Sound Fluency (LSF), Phoneme Segmentation Fluency (PSF), and Nonsense Word Fluency (NWF) also showed to be predictors of reading achievement with less significance.

Information gleaned from the early assessment could be used to guide instruction and assist with the monitoring of student progress prior to the first year of state high-stakes testing. Too often students in need of extra reading supports are identified too late for interventions to have a maximal impact (Reynolds & Shaywitz, 2009). The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between early assessments given prior to Missouri's state high-stakes test, the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP), in a school district located in the southeast of Missouri. The researcher examined scores of early literacy tests utilized by the district from the same year of the first MAP administration. Curriculum based measurements in reading (R-CBM) and cloze task word selection (maze), Developmental Reading Assessments (DRA), and district summative common assessments and compared them to scale scores on the Communication Arts portion of MAP. The dependability of each district utilized assessment (R-CBM, maze, DRA, and district summative common assessments) in predicting MAP scores should assist with the improvement of instruction within reading. If the R-CBM, maze, DRA, and/or summative common assessments do not accurately measure the performance of students on the MAP, schools utilizing one or a combination of these assessments will either be devoting resources, time, and/or money to students that do not need additional help. Furthermore, schools could be ignoring students who were in need of interventions and modified instruction. Additionally, local assessments are used to inform and adjust instruction in order to maximized student learning (Stiggins & DuFour, 2009). If the local assessments do not accurately reflect the state test, invalid decisions could be made that lead to poor teaching or gaps in the delivered curriculum.

Specifically, reading performance on the Ohio Achievement Test and curriculum-based measurement oral reading fluency scores were evaluated. Relationships were examined to determine possible predictors of future state achievement test performance. Trimester benchmarks in oral reading fluency were utilized in evaluating the reading performance of 575 students from a suburban Southwestern Ohio school district. The results indicated that curriculum-based measurements of oral reading fluency and Ohio Achievement Test reading have a strong predictive relationship. A model, utilizing the most recently administered Ohio Achievement Test and oral reading fluency scores demonstrated the strongest predictive relationship with future successful state test performance. Given the federal and state objectives focused on increasing student achievement, these findings provide schools and educators with practical methods of monitoring and predicting student success.
