Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This action research project studied how the regular repeated use of class and teambuilding activities affected the feeling of community within a 6th grade social studies classroom. This study developed because of teacher concerns about transition issues for students entering middle school from the self-contained classrooms of three feeder elementary schools. Initially students in this classroom were surveyed about these concerns. Following the survey, students participated in a variety of daily class and team building activities. Conclusions were drawn from daily rating comment sheets, teacher observations, student interviews, and comparisons of pare and post survey responses. Results indicate that students: found the activities to be enjoyable, became familiar with new classmates, were engaged and worked cooperatively and effectively together, and felt they were part of a positive learning community.

Book excerpt: The untold story of the root cause of America's education crisis--and the seemingly endless cycle of multigenerational poverty. It was only after years within the education reform movement that Natalie Wexler stumbled across a hidden explanation for our country's frustrating lack of progress when it comes to providing every child with a quality education. The problem wasn't one of the usual scapegoats: lazy teachers, shoddy facilities, lack of accountability. It was something no one was talking about: the elementary school curriculum's intense focus on decontextualized reading comprehension "skills" at the expense of actual knowledge. In the tradition of Dale Russakoff's The Prize and Dana Goldstein's The Teacher Wars, Wexler brings together history, research, and compelling characters to pull back the curtain on this fundamental flaw in our education system--one that fellow reformers, journalists, and policymakers have long overlooked, and of which the general public, including many parents, remains unaware. But The Knowledge Gap isn't just a story of what schools have gotten so wrong--it also follows innovative educators who are in the process of shedding their deeply ingrained habits, and describes the rewards that have come along: students who are not only excited to learn but are also acquiring the knowledge and vocabulary that will enable them to succeed. If we truly want to fix our education system and unlock the potential of our neediest children, we have no choice but to pay attention.

Book excerpt: In her new book, prominent professional developer Yvette Jackson focuses on students' strengths, rather than their weaknesses, To reinvigorate educators to inspire learning and high intellectual performance. Through the lens of educational psychology and historical reforms, Jackson responds To The faltering motivation and confidence of educators in terms of its effects on closing the achievement gap. The author seeks to "rekindle the belief in the vast capacity of underachieving urban students," and offers strategies to help educators inspire intellectual performance. Jackson proposes that a paradigm shift towards a focus on strengths will reinvigorate educators' passion for teaching and belief in their ability to raise the intellectual achievement of their students. Jackson addresses how educators can systematically support the development of motivation, reflective and cognitive skills, and high performance when standards and assessments are predisposed to non-conceptual methods. Furthermore, she examines challenges and offers strategies for dealing with cultural disconnects, The influence of new technologies, and language preferences of students.

The book is organized by quarters - starting with introductory activities and games during the start of the school year - and building to trust activities by the end of the year. Each activity is followed by a list of processing questions. These can be used to help the teacher and students get the most from the activities. There are also variations described for each activity. Activities require little or no equipment, and most can be done within the classroom. This book provides instant lesson plans that can easily be tied to today's classroom issues such as bullying, self-esteem, and diversity. These initiatives are a powerful tool for the teacher to help students work together, get to know each other, understand differences, and improve self-awareness.

How can our students achieve a higher standard-the commitment to bend the world towards justice? In a word, inquiry. Welcome to the classroom of Sara Ahmed. With Smokey Daniels as your guide you'll see exactly how Sara turns required topics into questions young adolescents can't resist investigating and units that help them become thoughtful, compassionate, and action-oriented.
