This book was released on 2015-11-30 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can peace be brokered between warring sides in conflicts over self-determination and what roles do external third parties play? This book is the first of its kind to thoroughly explore the effectiveness of aid conditionality and other external tools that third parties — from states and regional organizations to NGOs — bring to the table in peace negotiations. Surveying the existing academic debate on incentives and peace conditionality, the author first identifies the gaps between theory and the needs of third party mediators and facilitators. Analysing in depth the negotiation processes in Sri Lanka (Eelam), Indonesia (Aceh), and the Philippines (Mindanao) as case studies, policy tools likely to be most effective are then identified and policy recommendations developed. This book is an invaluable resource for students, scholars, and practitioners alike.

Offering unique reflections on the new frameworks set out by the UN, they look at the challenges and opportunities of third-party involvement. With its policy focus and real-world examples from across the globe, this is essential reading for researchers of peace and conflict studies, and a go-to reference point for advisors involved in peace processes.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author investigates the extend to which one can ethically apply the principle of «prevention» to conflicts as reflected in the pastoral letter «Gerechter Friede» of the German Episcopal Conference. He critically analyses the text of the second part of the pastoral letter, examines the outstanding controversies on it, reflects on the ethical meaning of «conflict» and «prevention» and finally attempts to apply his conclusions to the African paradigm of Church as Family. The investigation leads the author to the conclusion that conflicts are daily human experiences and may not always necessarily lead to violence. Besides, it is difficult to specify with certainty the point at which a particular conflict turns violent. Preventing them arbitrarily could be contra-productive. However, he agrees with «Gerechter Friede» that violence, especially war, can be better combated through undermining the logic of violence and counter violence rather than by its own instruments.

Book excerpt: This volume addresses the need to understand both the in-depth reality of each particular conflict site -- Sri Lanka, the Phillipines, Japan, Ireland, Yogoslavia, South Africa, the Indian subcontinent -- and also the experiences of women peace-workers across these different sites in a comparative perspective. While discussing the diverse strategies used by peace-workers and their relative success or failure, it also underlines the importance of women`s participation in forging partnerships for lasting peace.

Book excerpt: The end of the Cold War has changed the shape of organized violence in the world and the ways in which governments and others try to set its limits. Even the concept of international conflict is broadening to include ethnic conflicts and other kinds of violence within national borders that may affect international peace and security. What is not yet clear is whether or how these changes alter the way actors on the world scene should deal with conflict: Do the old methods still work? Are there new tools that could work better? How do old and new methods relate to each other? International Conflict Resolution After the Cold War critically examines evidence on the effectiveness of a dozen approaches to managing or resolving conflict in the world to develop insights for conflict resolution practitioners. It considers recent applications of familiar conflict management strategies, such as the use of threats of force, economic sanctions, and negotiation. It presents the first systematic assessments of the usefulness of some less familiar approaches to conflict resolution, including truth commissions, "engineered" electoral systems, autonomy arrangements, and regional organizations. It also opens up analysis of emerging issues, such as the dilemmas facing humanitarian organizations in complex emergencies. This book offers numerous practical insights and raises key questions for research on conflict resolution in a transforming world system.
