The river self-heals as the growth of native riparian vegetation accelerates the meandering process. Not all stream channel types are appropriate for Induced Meandering, yet the Induced Meandering philosophy of "going with the flow" can inform all stream restoration projects. Induced meandering strives to understand rivers as timeless entities governed by immutable rules serving their watersheds, setting their own timetables, and coping with their own realities as they carry mountains grain by grain to the sea. Book excerpt: The Clean Water Act (CWA) requires that wetlands be protected from degradation because of their important ecological functions including maintenance of high water quality and provision of fish and wildlife habitat. However, this protection generally does not encompass riparian areasâ€"the lands bordering rivers and lakesâ€"even though they often provide the same functions as wetlands. Growing recognition of the similarities in wetland and riparian area functioning and the differences in their legal protection led the NRC in 1999 to undertake a study of riparian areas, which has culminated in Riparian Areas: Functioning and Strategies for Management. The report is intended to heighten awareness of riparian areas commensurate with their ecological and societal values. The primary conclusion is that, because riparian areas perform a disproportionate number of biological and physical functions on a unit area basis, restoration of riparian functions along America's waterbodies should be a national goal.

Book excerpt: The limited spatial extent of riparian systems in Nevada belies their importance to the production of ecosystem services by the landscape as a whole. Management of these systems is complicated by legacy effects of historic management, contrasting and often conflicting perspectives among stakeholders, and differing philosophies and mandates among the various land management agencies charged with their care. Recently, there has been interest in increased collaboration in the management of riparian areas to mitigate these challenges. In widespread use in Nevada for up to 15 years, Proper Functioning Condition (PFC) assessment is a qualitative method for rapid riparian assessment. We investigated the effectiveness of the teaching of PFC, its utility in the field, and current use in management through a survey of class participants, field users, and land managers. The results indicate that PFC is widely supported by those who use it. The technical aspects of performing PFC seem to be slightly better understood than its more nuanced use in building cooperation and trust among stakeholders and developing appropriate, adaptive, and collaborative management for riparian areas and their adjoining uplands. High quality water is understood to be a product of functional ecosystems. If PFC is helping managers steer riparian areas toward higher functionality, there should be improvements in physical, chemical, and biological water quality. Through statistical analysis of a variety of available data, we looked for evidence of such a relationship. While we were not able to show a connection between PFC-driven management and water quality, the attempt to do so provided insight into some challenges of using water quality standards and monitoring as a basis for riparian management and suggested some appropriate directions for future study.

It provides a consistent framework for implementing the effectiveness monitoring of aquatic and riparian resources within the range of the Pacific Anadromous Fish Strategy (PACFISH) and the Inland Fish Strategy (INFISH). The primary objective is to evaluate the effect of land management activities on aquatic and riparian communities at multiple scales and to determine whether PACFISH/INFISH management practices are effective in maintaining or improving the structure and function of riparian and aquatic conditions at both the landscape and watershed scales on Federal lands throughout the upper Columbia River Basin. A list of attributes thought to be important in defining aquatic and riparian habitat conditions and their relationship with listed species were identified. The list of attributes was then translated into measurable criteria and compiled to form sampling protocols for both stream channel parameters (Part II) and vegetation parameters (Part III). These sampling methods were tested for variability, and the results are documented in two other publications "Testing Common Stream Sampling Methods for Broad-Scale, Long-Term Monitoring." (Archer and others 2004) and "The Repeatability of Riparian Vegetation Sampling Methods: How Useful Are These Techniques for Broad-Scale Monitoring?" (Coles-Ritchie and others, in preparation). "
