Book excerpt: A flight experiment was conducted to assess human factors issues associated with pilot use of traffic displays for approach spacing. Sixteen multi-engine rated pilots participated. Eight flew approaches in a twin-engine Piper Aztec originating in Sanford, ME, and eight flew approaches in the same aircraft originating in Atlantic City, NJ. The spacing target was a Cessna 206. The traffic display was either a Garmin International MX-20™ (the “Basic” Cockpit Display of Traffic Information, or CDTI) or an MX-20™ modified with features to help the pilot monitor the closing rate, the range and ground speed of the traffic-to-follow, and ownship ground speed (Range Monitor). Two other Equipment conditions were Baseline and Autopilot. Pilots successfully used the displays to maintain the assigned spacing on visual and instrument approaches.

[snip] Pilots successfully used the displays to maintain the assigned spacing on visual and instrument approaches. The spacing deviations were significantly lower when using the displays during visual approaches than when attempting to maintain spacing without a traffic display. [snip] While the traffic display reduced visual reacquisition times, this effect was only found with pilots whose displays showed additional traffic (not only the traffic-to-follow). In general, however, the additional traffic was associated with less time between fixations on the display and higher workload. Subjects appeared to have had difficulty identifying an optimal display range that would simultaneously provide traffic awareness and spacing task performance. The traffic display necessarily requires visual attention and reduces the attention available for scanning the instrument panel and on visual approaches, the outside world. --P. iii.

The spacing deviations were significantly lower when using the displays during visual approaches than when attempting to maintain spacing without a traffic display. The mean spacing deviation during the IFR approaches was less than 0.10 NM for all three equipment conditions (Basic CDTI, Range Monitor, Autopilot), and these mean spacing deviations did not differ significantly. Range Monitor features appeared to particularly benefit the low-hour pilots. While the traffic display reduced visual reacquisition times, this effect was only found with pilots whose displays showed additional traffic (not only the traffic-to-follow). In general, however, the additional traffic was associated with less time between fixations on the display and higher workload. This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several recent high profile mid-air collisions highlight the fact that mid-air collisions are a concern for general aviation. Current traffic alerting systems have limited usability in the airport environment where a majority of mid-air collisions occur. A Traffic Situation Awareness with Alerting Application (TSAA) has been developed which uses Automatic Dependent -- Surveillance -- Broadcast (ADS-B), a Global Positioning System (GPS) based surveillance system, to provide reliable alerts in a condensed environment. TSAA was designed to be compatible with general aviation operations. It was specifically designed to enhance situation awareness and provide traffic alerting. The system does not include guidance or resolution advisories. In addition, the design was consistent with established standards, previous traffic alerting system precedents, as well as air traffic control precedent. Taking into account the potential financial burden associated with installation of a multi-function display (MFD), an audio based TSAA system was also designed to account for constrained cockpit space and added cost of a MFD. TSAA System performance & basic usability was tested using human in the loop studies using a total of 50 general aviation pilots. The studies also evaluated a number of design issues in order to provide recommendation for the final TSAA design. The system was found to be usable and generally effective for all of the encounter scenarios analyzed in both the audio-only and display systems. Performance was significantly improved in the enroute scenarios when a Cockpit Display of Traffic Information (CDTI) was available compared with aural alerts only. In most cases, pilots became aware and responded to traffic earlier when a display was available. Miss distance also increased. Analysis of the audio only system showed that performance improved when alerts were provided to the pilot when compared to performance without a traffic system for a head-on case highlighting the benefit of TSAA. Performance analysis of the final TSAA design showed that 98.7% of all collisions were avoided when TSAA was used. The 1.3% of collisions that did occur were due to the pilots' conscience decision to disregard an alert. The TSAA system was evaluated for functionality and usability. The findings of these studies will contribute to TSAA standards development for the FAA and design recommendations for the avionics manufacturers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Automation in air traffic control may increase efficiency, but it also raises questions about adequate human control over automated systems. Following on the panel's first volume on air traffic control automation, Flight to the Future (NRC, 1997), this book focuses on the interaction of pilots and air traffic controllers, with a growing network of automated functions in the airspace system. The panel offers recommendations for development of human-centered automation, addressing key areas such as providing levels of automation that are appropriate to levels of risk, examining procedures for recovery from emergencies, free flight versus ground-based authority, and more. The book explores ways in which technology can build on human strengths and compensate for human vulnerabilities, minimizing both mistrust of automation and complacency about its abilities. The panel presents an overview of emerging technologies and trends toward automation within the national airspace systemâ€"in areas such as global positioning and other aspects of surveillance, flight information provided to pilots an controllers, collision avoidance, strategic long-term planning, and systems for training and maintenance. The book examines how to achieve better integration of research and development, including the importance of user involvement in air traffic control. It also discusses how to harmonize the wide range of functions in the national airspace system, with a detailed review of the free flight initiative.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was undertaken to investigate applications of Cockpit Display of Traffic Information (CDTI) in the operation of current, conventionally equipped transport aircraft. Since flight decks of the current transport-aircraft fleet probably will nto be reconfigured to accommodate a special display dedicated to this purpose, the weather-radar cathode-ray tube (CRT) is the prime contender for the presentation of CDTI. However, unique problems may result from the use of the weather-radar CRT for CDTI, since the CRT size is not optimized for CDTI applications and the CRT is not in the pilot's primary visual scan area. The primary objective of this study was to assess the impact of display size on the ability of pilots to utilize the traffic information to maintain a specified spacing interval behind a lead aircraft during an approach task. The five display sizes considered are representative of the display hardware configurations of airborne weather-radar systems.
