Book Synopsis Use of Tire Noise as a Measure of Pavement Macrotexture by : JJ. Henry
Download or read book Use of Tire Noise as a Measure of Pavement Macrotexture written by JJ. Henry and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A procedure is described for measuring the near-field tire noise generated by a treadless tire operating at specified fixed conditions. Analysis of the noise spectra indicates that they are dependent on pavement macrotexture and that certain characteristics of the spectra appear to correlate with skid number-speed gradient as deduced from locked wheel skid tests. Third-octave spectral analyses are shown for a treadless tire operating at 40 mph over seven test surfaces having different macrotextures. A tentative correlation of the sound pressure level of the tire noise for the thirdoctave with center frequency at 1600 Hz, and the skid number-speed gradient is presented. The investigation suggests the feasibility of tire noise measurements as a practical means of pavement skid resistance appraisal in a normal highway traffic environment.

Book Synopsis Effect of Pavement Texture on Tire-road Noise by : David Frederick Noble
Download or read book Effect of Pavement Texture on Tire-road Noise written by David Frederick Noble and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of the potentially conflicting considerations for cost, durability, environment and safety the design engineer must have information on each such subject on which to base his decisions. The great variety of pavement textures for affecting the noise levels generated by traffic on the highway, made the need for information on the effect of pavement texture on tire road noise obvious. Noise measurements were made at 19 sites, including both bituminous (I-2, S-5, S-8 surface treatment) and portland cement concrete (aggregate exposed and grooved) pavements that had a wide variety of textures. A 1971 Plymouth 4-door sedan was used as the test vehicle. Both rib treads and snow treads were used in the tests. The data were analyzed in the linear (dB) and A-weighted (dBA) modes. Frequency analyses were made on ten recordings that were representative of most of the data. It was determined that pavement parameters such as density, type of aggregate, and the flat-mosaic aspect had very little effect on the intensity of the noise generated. The parameter that had the greatest effect was the degree of protuberance. From the analyses of the frequency content of the noise it was determined that the 3/4 inch (1.9 cm) transverse grooved and the dimpled textures generated relatively pure tones in the high frequency range most easily sensed by humans. Recommendations are made concerning the use of the various pavement surfaces tested.

Download or read book Evaluation of Pavement Friction Characteristics written by John Jewett Henry and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2000 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis report will be of interest to pavement design, construction, management, and research engineers, highway safety officials, and others concerned with pavement friction characteristics. It describes the current state of the practice and discusses the methods used for evaluating wet pavement friction characteristics of new and restored pavements. This synthesis reviews models used for measuring and evaluating friction and texture, causes for friction changes over time, and aggregate and mix design to provide adequate friction. Also presented are construction and surface restoration practices for providing good pavement surface characteristics. In addition, considerations of noise and ride quality are discussed when compromise may be required.
Book Synopsis Measuring and Visualizing Tire-Pavement Noise Using On-Board Sound Intensity by : Richard C. Sohaney
Download or read book Measuring and Visualizing Tire-Pavement Noise Using On-Board Sound Intensity written by Richard C. Sohaney and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Concrete Pavement Surface Characteristics Program (CPSCP) has recently developed guidelines and practices for reducing tire- pavement noise. The primary means for doing this is via measurements using the on-board sound intensity (OBSI) technique. OBSI measures tire-pavement noise at the source utilizing specialized microphones mounted to the outside of a vehicle, near the tire-pavement interface. Measurements are performed while the vehicle drives across the pavement being evaluated. To facilitate innovation, specifications have been developed based on an end-result approach. In this paper, a means for how to measure OBSI is provided, along with a means to interpret the as-constructed quality through visualization techniques. With it, the spatial variability of tire-pavement noise, as measured using OBSI, can be readily determined.
