Book excerpt: This report presents the results of an investigation into the formulation and application of assumed-stress hybrid finite-elements for bending of multilayer laminated plates and shells. Two families of hybrid-stress-based multilayer plate elements are considered; these elements are denoted as thick plate and moderately-thick plate elements. In the development of the thick plate elements, transverse shear deformation effects are included by allowing lines normal to the plate midsurface in the undeformed state to be piecewise linear from layer to layer in the deformed state. Transverse shear deformation effects are included in an average sense in the moderately-thick plate element family by assuming that straight lines normal to the plate midsurface prior to deformation remain straight but not necessarily normal to the plate midsurface after deformation. Comparison of the results obtained by using the thick plate and moderately-thick plate elements with independent analytical results shows that the moderately-thick plate elements are more efficient and practical for the analysis of multilayer structures having a large number of elastically dissimilar layers.

Book Synopsis Hybrid Finite Element Method for Stress Analysis of Laminated Composites by : Suong Van Hoa

This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has one single purpose: to present the development of the partial hybrid finite element method for the stress analysis of laminated composite structures. The reason for this presentation is because the authors believe that partial hybrid finite element method is more efficient that the displacement based finite element method for the stress analysis oflaminated composites. In fact, the examples in chapter 5 of this book show that the partial hybrid finite element method is about 5 times more efficient than the displacement based finite element method. Since there is a great need for accurate and efficient calculation of interlaminar stresses for the design using composites, the partial hybrid finite method does provide one possible solution. Hybrid finite method has been in existence since 1964 and a significant amount of work has been done on the topic. However, the authors are not aware of any systematic piece of literature that gives a detailed presentation of the method. Chapters of the displacement finite element method and the evolution 1 and 2 present a sununary of the hybrid finite element method. Hopefully, these two chapters can provide the readers with an appreciation for the difference between the displacement finite element method and the hybrid finite element. It also should prepare the readers for the introduction of partial hybrid finite element method presented in chapter 3.

Book Synopsis Finite Element Bibliography by : Gerard De Vries
Download or read book Finite Element Bibliography written by Gerard De Vries and published by Springer. This book was released on 1976-12 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thjs bibliography had its inception in 1967, when the compilers first attempted a comprehensive cov erage of the finite element literature using both manual and computer-based retrieval. Initially, the data base was stored on a card index, but this was subsequently transferred to punched cards and magnetic tape. Computer processing was adopted at an early stage to derive the three index formats from the data base. Over the subsequent years, several versions of the bibliography were produced, with two of these being made available in a report form to other researchers. From the widespread interest in these documents, it became evident that there was a need for a commercially-available comprehensive bibliography in this area. A major effort was undertaken to revise, update, and extend the data base, resulting in this present volume. The bibliography covers the period 1956-1975 primarily, although some earlier publications of histori cal interest are included. The citations are not restricted to the English language and documents are listed in many languages and from diverse places of origin. All publication formats were accepted, so that references will be found to books, monographs, journal papers and articles, theses, dissertations, reports, surveys, and the like.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work an attempt has been made to develop theories for finite element static and dynamic stress analysis tailored for use with composite layered plates and shells in this way it was hoped to provide accurate values of the stresses particularly transverse shear stresses through the thickness, and to perform accurate natural frequency analysis by including non-linear effects such as centrifugal stiffening. Initial derivations were based upon first order facet shell element analysis and first order curved shell element analysis. Subsequently, derivations were produced for higher order element analysis. A programming package has been developed based upon the above derivations, and containing a banded solver as well as a frontal solver, capable of analysing structures build up from uniform or variable thickness layers and with a multiple number of layers having constant or variable dimension. Results obtained with the aid of the present package have been compared with results derived from experimental work as well as with results derived from available analytical solutions. Investigations have been carried out for existing compressor blades, made of isotropic material and layered composite material, respectively. The results obtained from the package have been compared with available experimental results produced by RR or carried out at Cranfield. It has been shown that the above mentioned derivations produce comparable results and the package has proved to be reliable and accurate.

Book Synopsis Finite Element Static, Dynamic, and Flutter Analysis of Rotating Composite Layered Plates and Shells by :
Download or read book Finite Element Static, Dynamic, and Flutter Analysis of Rotating Composite Layered Plates and Shells written by and published by . This book was released on 1902 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis introduces new conforming and non-conforming finite elements for the static and dynamic analysis of rotating composite layered plates and shells. The elements consider parabolic distributions of transverse shear stresses, and based on Lagrangian and Hermitian shape functions. They can deal with variable thickness distributions as well as uniform distributions, and they are fully capable to deal with rotating plate and shell structures, i. e. centrifugal stiffening and Coriolis force effects are considered. Natural frequency analysis, forced vibration analysis, and flutter analysis of composite layered plate and shell structures, employing those elements, have been investigated. A computer programming package based on the developed theory was designed, and it is machine independent and user friendly. A modular approach was adopted in the package structure to allow any further development to be considered. Efficient frontal solvers were adopted in the package for different types of analysis. The developed package has been successfully validated on a main frame computer (VAX), Unix workstations, and personal computers. Several case studies were investigated and the results obtained were compared with corresponding, published theoretical and/or experimental work. The package has proved to be a very useful tool for the design optimization of composite layered plates and shells by means of using different fibre angles for different layers so as to achieve the required strength and/or stiffness.
