Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive introduction to techniques for quantitative subsidence analysis and visualization with example applications. Subsidence analysis is an essential step to understand basin evolution through geologic time and space in the study of sediments and sedimentary basins. Quantifying techniques have been developed and applied in many basin research projects to evaluate total, tectonic and thermal subsidence. They are also a pre-requisite for basin evolution modelling. Recent studies have applied visualization techniques to understand regional subsidence contexts and trends, which confirmed that three-dimensional visualization of the basin subsidence is highly helpful to gain insight into basin evolution. In this book, we show how geoscience and computer science can be effectively combined in advanced basin analysis, especially in terms of basin subsidence. Each type of subsidence analysis is introduced with example applications. In particular we present a study of the Vienna basin using BasinVis, a MATLAB-based program for analyzing and visualizing basin subsidence. Given its breadth of coverage, this book will benefit students in undergraduate and postgraduate courses and provide helpful information for research projects and industry applications.

Book excerpt: Magnetism is important in environmental studies for several reasons, the two most fundamental being that most substances exhibit some form of magnetic behavior, and that iron is one of the most common elements in the Earth's crust. Once sequestered in a suitable material, magnetic particles constitute a natural archive of conditions existing in former times. Magnetism provides a tracer of paleo-climatic and paleo-environmental conditions and processes.Environmental Magnetism details the occurrence and uses of magnetic materials in the natural environment. The first half of the volume describes the basic principles. The second half discusses the applications of magnetic measurements in various environmental settings on land, in lakes, in the ocean, and even various biological organisms.* Material is broadly applicable to environmental studies* Case histories illustrate key points* Extensive bibliography makes further research quick and easy

This ocean included the richest n

Book excerpt: This monumental synthesis of our knowledge of the biostratigraphy of marine plankton is the work of an international team of thirteen authors, who have contributed nineteen chapters in all. The book covers every aspect of the stratigraphy of plankton, starting with the fossil schemes and then systematically examining the identification of the groups through geological time (from the present to the Cretaceous era). A particular strength of the work is the provision of thousands of photographs and diagrams of particular planktic fossils, making the book an indispensable work of reference in the earth sciences.

Book excerpt: Every four years micropaleontologists from across the globe gather in Houston, Texas for the quadrennial conference of the North American Micropaleontology Section-SEPM (NAMS) to learn, share, and network on applied micropaleontology. Geologic Problem Solving with Microfossils IV was held on April 5-8, 2017 with 130 participants. Fourteen of the 95 presentations were selected for publication, which includes papers on geologic applications utilizing foraminifera (benthic and planktic), calcareous nannofossils, palynology, and conodonts, in studies of rocks and sediments ranging from the Pennsylvanian to the modern.
