However, some children with disabilities do not demonstrate the ability to imitate in the course of their natural development. Therefore, explicit instruction is required to help these children take advantage of such a pivotal skill. Much of the research in the area of imitation has focused on observational learning. In these studies, many of the participants are already able to imitate the actions of adults, and are then taught to imitate their peers (Garfinkle & Schwartz, 2002; Venn et al., 1993). Previous interventions for teaching initial imitation skills to young children with disabilities has focused on methoods such as discrete trial training, where instruction is provided by an adult in an isolated, distraction-free setting (Smith, 2001). The purpose of this study was to evaluate an imitation training package, designed to teach initial imitation skills using constant time delay in the context of a preschool classroom. The target children were paired with typically developing peers, and all aspects of the study were embedded into ongoing activities. Generalization sessions were conducted, and incorporated a larger group of children with the classroom teacher providing the model. The dependent variables included the number of correct imitations, and the number of approximations of correct imitations of the adult model. Trials in which the children did not respond, or responded inappropriately were also measured. The effects of the intervention were monitored using a single-subject multiple baseline design across target behaivors, replicated across children. Additionally, measures of procedural integrity, accuracy and social validity were collected. The results of this study indicated that children with severe disabilities could learn to imitate an adult's model in the context of ongoing activities, with a typically developing peer. While the target children learned to imitate the adult model in the instuctional session, they were not as successful in demonstrating their skills in the generalization setting. Although strategies were implemented to promote generalization, very little generalization actually occurred. Social validity data suggest that the target children made notable gains in their ability to imitate.

Previous research has demonstrated the effectiveness of matrix training for promoting recombinative generalization across a variety of skills, but no study has compared the relative effectiveness of matrix training to other teaching procedures. The purpose of the current study is to compare acquisition and recombinative generalization of novel relations across non-overlapping matrix training (NOMT), traditional discrimination training (TDT), and overlapping matrix training (OMT). The three students who participated all demonstrated similar acquisition performance across teaching procedures. A difference in performance across the teaching procedures was only evident when tests for recombinative generalization were conducted. Two of the students demonstrated stronger performance on recombinative generalization tests in the TDT condition relative to the NOMT condition. The third participant demonstrated stronger performance on recombinative generalization tests in the OMT condition relative to the NOMT. Secondary analyses suggested that NOMT promoted the development of stimulus overselectivity. Book excerpt: For many years, Roger Brown and his colleagues have studied the developing language of pre-school children--the language that ultimately will permit them to understand themselves and the world around them. This longitudinal research project records the conversational performances of three children, studying both semantic and grammatical aspects of their language development. These core findings are related to recent work in psychology and linguistics--and especially to studies of the acquisition of languages other than English, including Finnish, German, Korean, and Samoan. Roger Brown has written the most exhaustive and searching analysis yet undertaken of the early stages of grammatical constructions and the meanings they convey. The five stages of linguistic development Brown establishes are measured not by chronological age-since children vary greatly in the speed at which their speech develops--but by mean length of utterance. This volume treats the first two stages. Stage I is the threshold of syntax, when children begin to combine words to make sentences. These sentences, Brown shows, are always limited to the same small set of semantic relations: nomination, recurrence, disappearance, attribution, possession, agency, and a few others. Stage II is concerned with the modulations of basic structural meanings--modulations for number, time, aspect, specificity--through the gradual acquisition of grammatical morphemes such as inflections, prepositions, articles, and case markers. Fourteen morphemes are studied in depth and it is shown that the order of their acquisition is almost identical across children and is predicted by their relative semantic and grammatical complexity. It is, ultimately, the intent of this work to focus on the nature and development of knowledge: knowledge concerning grammar and the meanings coded by grammar; knowledge inferred from performance, from sentences and the settings in which they are spoken, and from signs of comprehension or incomprehension of sentences.
