Book excerpt: The Arizona Department of Transportation's (ADOT's) SPR-570: Rural ITS Progress Study - Arizona 2004 provided 20 key recommendations for improved utilization of the rural Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) infrastructure. Two years later, in reviewing the outcomes of the 2004 study and the ongoing rural technology deployments, the Department identified several of the key concerns as still being unresolved. In general, ADOT has been successful in implementing the recommendations of the 2004 statewide review, but five areas of unmet needs or unfulfilled potential remain. These five gap areas are the primary focus of this new research project, to fully implement the potential of all of the recommendations from the 2004 study. The five primary focus areas are: ITS maintenance, weather information systems, highway advisory radio, motorist assist patrols, and information sharing. The research team interviewed the project's stakeholders from Arizona's rural districts to identify recent changes in their ITS deployment, goals, and visions for future deployment, as well as current needs and desires since the previous 2004 study. The investigators also reviewed the current practices and concepts of rural ITS among other transportation agencies throughout the country. This included conducting personal interviews with recognized industry leaders, attending industry conferences, and performing extensive research in literature, products (both off-the-shelf and in-development), and on-line. Based on the interviews and state-of-the-practice research components, the investigators developed a list of ITS concepts that might service the rural needs of the Department. Each of the five focus areas contains several concepts that address needs identified as original project goals, or new topics identified during the field interviews. Each discussion section provides a conceptual approach and application of ITS technology or state-of-the-practice development, a breakdown of benefits and challenges for implementation, implementation recommendations and a breakdown of the engineer's opinion of cost. Each concept has been ranked by the project advisory group based on implementation priority. A potential process owner and potential resources for deployment are also identified.

Book excerpt: "Perspectives on ITS" is a collection of the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) writings of Professor Joseph M. Sussman from MIT. Professor Sussman is a long-time major participant in the ITS world, beginning with his work on the core writing team in the original "IVHS" Strategic Plan in 1991-92, and continuing on to the present day. He has worked in a number of ITS area and is a keen observer of the ITS scene in general. The book contains extended articles on various aspects of ITS and perspectives on the future of the field, building on its rich history; organizational issues related to ITS – in particular, regionalism and the transportation / information infrastructure; and ITS’ implications for the transportation profession at large and for transportation education. In addition it contains 14 selected columns from the ITS Quarterly.

Book excerpt: Building around innovative services related to different modes of transport and traffic management, intelligent transport systems (ITS) are being widely adopted worldwide to improve the efficiency and safety of the transportation system. They enable users to be better informed and make safer, more coordinated, and smarter decisions on the use of transport networks. Current ITSs are complex systems, made up of several components/sub-systems characterized by time-dependent interactions among themselves. Some examples of these transportation-related complex systems include: road traffic sensors, autonomous/automated cars, smart cities, smart sensors, virtual sensors, traffic control systems, smart roads, logistics systems, smart mobility systems, and many others that are emerging from niche areas. The efficient operation of these complex systems requires: i) efficient solutions to the issues of sensors/actuators used to capture and control the physical parameters of these systems, as well as the quality of data collected from these systems; ii) tackling complexities using simulations and analytical modelling techniques; and iii) applying optimization techniques to improve the performance of these systems.

Book excerpt: The Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Program is a cooperative effort by government, private industry, and academia to apply advanced technology to the task of resolving the problems of surface transportation. The objective is to improve travel efficiency and mobility, enhance safety, conserve energy, provide economic benefits, and protect the environment. The current demand for mobility has exceeded the available capacity of the roadway system. Because the highway system cannot be expanded, except in minor ways, the available capacity must be used more efficiently to handle the increased demand. ITS applies advanced information processing, communication, sensing, and computer control technologies to the problems of surface transportation. Considerable research and development efforts will be required to produce these new technologies and to convert technologies developed in the defense and space programs to solve surface transportation problems. ITS has been subdivided into six interlocking technology areas. This book addresses human factors concerns for four of these areas: * Advanced Traveler Information Systems are a variety of systems that provide real time, in-vehicle information to drivers regarding navigation and route guidance, motorist services, roadway signing, and hazard warnings. * Advanced Vehicle Control Systems refer to systems that aid drivers in controlling their vehicle particularly in emergency situations and ultimately taking over some or all of the driving tasks. * Commercial Vehicle Operations address the application of ITS technologies to the special needs of commercial roadway vehicles including automated vehicle identification, location, weigh-in-motion, clearance sensing, and record keeping. * Advanced Traffic Management Systems monitor, control and manage traffic on streets and highways to reduce congestion using vehicle route diversion, automated signal timing, changeable message signs, and priority control systems. Two technical areas are not specifically addressed in individual chapters, but many aspects of them are covered in associated chapters: * Advanced Rural Transportation Systems include systems that apply ITS technologies to the special needs of rural systems and include emergency notification and response, vehicle location, and traveler information. * Advanced Public Transportation Systems enhance the effectiveness, attractiveness and economics of public transportation and include fleet management, automated fare collection, and real-time information systems.
