Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During a portion of the 20th century known as the Cold War Era, when the United States feared an attack on its land, our armed forces kept a 24-hour vigil to meet any armed aggression against us. A part of this vigil involved the United States Air Force keeping fighter interceptor squadrons on alert at all times, with a certain amount of aircraft poised in alert hangars, fully armed and ready to launch within five-minutes from the sound of the alarm. This history is about one such squadron, the 60th/337th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron assigned to Westover Air Force Base, Chicopee, Massachusetts. Its task was to guard a specific area of airspace in the northeast from an airborne attack. Their object was to destroy any enemy bombers penetrating U.S. airspace that was assigned to the squadron. The Air Force assigned the newest ‘all-weather’ interceptor, the F-86D Sabrejet, to the 60th in May 1953. Sometime in mid-1956 the squadron began receiving a more advanced version of the Sabrejet known as the F-86L. In 1958, the squadron converted to the fastest interceptor in the U.S. arsenal, the F-104 Starfighter, which they flew until the unit was deactivated in July 1960. You will follow the events of this fighter squadron from May 1953 until its last F-104 departed in June 1960. It tells the stories of the unit’s accomplishments, tragedies that befell the squadron, the personal reflections and feelings of some of the members, some eventful sporting news, a few social events that occurred, and the public relations work involved in helping the civilian population in the surrounding communities to better understand the importance of the mission of the fighter squadron, and the significance it had on the civilian population.

Book excerpt: A history of the 54th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, including a brief history of its predecessor the 54th Fighter Squadron which was active in World War II. Because the mission of the 54th FIS involved nuclear weapons, even in 2015 the majority of the official Air Force unit records were still treated as classified, although they had been officially declassified in November 1978. The author's primary source of information for this history was from content provided directly to him by former members of the 54th FIS who wanted the story of their fighter unit told. Most of this material was previously determined non-existent.

Book excerpt: Director and producer Tim Burton impresses audiences with stunning visuals, sinister fantasy worlds, and characters whose personalities are strange and yet familiar. Drawing inspiration from sources as varied as Lewis Carroll, Salvador Dalí, Washington Irving, and Dr. Seuss, Burton's creations frequently elicit both alarm and wonder. Whether crafting an offbeat animated feature, a box-office hit, a collection of short fiction, or an art exhibition, Burton pushes the envelope, and he has emerged as a powerful force in contemporary popular culture. In The Philosophy of Tim Burton, a distinguished group of scholars examines the philosophical underpinnings and significance of the director's oeuvre, investigating films such as Batman (1989), Edward Scissorhands (1990), The Nightmare before Christmas (1993), Sleepy Hollow (1999), Big Fish (2003), Sweeney Todd (2007), Alice in Wonderland (2010), and Dark Shadows (2012). The essays in this volume explore Burton's distinctive style, often disturbing content, and popular appeal through three thematic lenses: identity, views on authority, and aesthetic vision. Covering topics ranging from Burton's fascination with Victorian ideals, to his celebration of childhood, to his personal expression of the fantastic, the contributors highlight the filmmaker's peculiar narrative style and his use of unreal settings to prompt heightened awareness of the world we inhabit. The Philosophy of Tim Burton offers a penetrating and provocative look at one of Hollywood's most influential auteurs.

Book Synopsis Sierra Hotel : flying Air Force fighters in the decade after Vietnam by :
Download or read book Sierra Hotel : flying Air Force fighters in the decade after Vietnam written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In February 1999, only a few weeks before the U.S. Air Force spearheaded NATO's Allied Force air campaign against Serbia, Col. C.R. Anderegg, USAF (Ret.), visited the commander of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe. Colonel Anderegg had known Gen. John Jumper since they had served together as jet forward air controllers in Southeast Asia nearly thirty years earlier. From the vantage point of 1999, they looked back to the day in February 1970, when they first controlled a laser-guided bomb strike. In this book Anderegg takes us from "glimmers of hope" like that one through other major improvements in the Air Force that came between the Vietnam War and the Gulf War. Always central in Anderegg's account of those changes are the people who made them. This is a very personal book by an officer who participated in the transformation he describes so vividly. Much of his story revolves around the Fighter Weapons School at Nellis Air Force Base (AFB), Nevada, where he served two tours as an instructor pilot specializing in guided munitions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book chronicles the contribution made by the U.S. Air Force to NATO air power in France. From 1950 to 1967 the USAF set-up and maintained bases in France. At peak strength the U.S. Air Force had seventy-seven installations, nine tactical air bases, four dispersed operating bases, a major air logistics depot, off-base weapon storage sites, radio relay sites, radio navigational beacon sites, dependent schools, and twenty-seven hundred family housing units. Fifteen years of work have gone into telling the story of the wings, squadrons and support units that made this mission work under conditions that were often very challenging. A chapter each on the U.S. Army and the RCAF give an overview of their effort as well. The first five chapters cover the geopolitical conditions that brought us to France, the movement and construction required, life in France, and the FRELOC departure in 1967. Twelve chapters are devoted to the history of each base. A 32-page color section displays the wing and squadron patches for all the flying units stationed in France. The book contains more than 400 photographs, an abundance of maps, a base occupancy timeline chart, aircraft tail numbers, and an extensive bibliography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black Watch Diary is the true story of the cocky young fly-boys of the US Air Force 59th all-weather jet figher-interceptor squadron. Their 1950s and 60s Cold War mission was defending Canada and the US from Soviet nuclear bombers coming over the short arctic routes. In 1952 the 59th FIS was moved from Otis Air Force Base in Massachussets, to Goose Bay, Labrador, Canada. Black Watch Diary chronicles the daily life of these 1950s airmen as seen through the eyes of Radar Operator, Lt. Josh Batchelder. The 59th Tigers often had to fly in heavy snow, ice, fierce winds, and sub-zero temperatures. When the scramble alert alarm sounded, pilots and their radar observers climbed into their cockpits, ignited their afterburners and blasted off to intercept bandits and bogeys breaching the Canadian Air Defense Indentificaiton Zone. Batchelder shares his story and those of other with whom he served and brings honor to them all.
