This book was released on 1992 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the basic problems to be solved by geotechnical engineers in regions where earthquake hazards exist is to estimate the site-specific dynamic response of a layered soil deposit under a level ground surface. This problem is commonly referred to as a site-specific response analysis or soil amplification study (although motions may be deamplified). The solution of this problem allows the geotechnical engineer to evaluate the potential for liquefaction, to conduct the first analytical phase of seismic stability evaluations for slopes and embankments, to calculate site natural periods, to assess ground motion amplification, and to provide structural engineers with various parameters, primarily response spectra, for design and safety evaluations of structures. The computer program described and provided in this report, WESHAKE, may be used to accomplish this task. WESHAKE is an adaptation of the original computer program, SHAKE, written at the University of California at Berkeley by Schnabel, Lysmer, and Seed (1972). WESHAKE was created and has been continually modified by WES to keep pace with state-of-the-art technology and provide a user-friendly interface. Computer software, Earthquake engineering, Site response, Soil amplification, Vibration.

Book excerpt: During the 1970s, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) embarked upon an undertaking which has since been termed the Strong-Motion Instrumentation Program (SMIP). The SMIP was designed to allow observation and analysis of seismic waves produced by earthquakes and explosions to examine the effect of these motions on USACE projects. Objectives of SMIP are three- fold: a. To provide insight into the safety of and to act as an inspection guide for existing USACE projects. b. To provide a measure of project performance. C. To act as a database for performance predictions and earthquake research.

Book excerpt: This book presents a one-stop reference to the empirical correlations used extensively in geotechnical engineering. Empirical correlations play a key role in geotechnical engineering designs and analysis. Laboratory and in situ testing of soils can add significant cost to a civil engineering project. By using appropriate empirical correlations, it is possible to derive many design parameters, thus limiting our reliance on these soil tests. The authors have decades of experience in geotechnical engineering, as professional engineers or researchers. The objective of this book is to present a critical evaluation of a wide range of empirical correlations reported in the literature, along with typical values of soil parameters, in the light of their experience and knowledge. This book will be a one-stop-shop for the practising professionals, geotechnical researchers and academics looking for specific correlations for estimating certain geotechnical parameters. The empirical correlations in the forms of equations and charts and typical values are collated from extensive literature review, and from the authors' database.

Book excerpt: Large-scale wind power generation is one of the fastest developing sources of renewable energy and already makes a substantial contribution to power grids in many countries worldwide. With technology maturing, the challenge is now to increase penetration, and optimise the design, construction and performance of wind energy systems. Fundamental issues of safety and reliability are paramount in this drive to increase capacity and efficiency.Wind energy systems: Optimising design and construction for safe and reliable operation provides a comprehensive review of the latest developments in the design, construction and operation of large-scale wind energy systems, including in offshore and other problematic environments.Part one provides detailed coverage of wind resource assessment and siting methods relevant to wind turbine and wind farm planning, as well as aeroelastics, aerodynamics, and fatigue loading that affect the safety and reliability of wind energy systems. This coverage is extended in part two, where the design and development of individual components is considered in depth, from wind turbine rotors to drive train and control systems, and on to tower design and construction. Part three explores operation and maintenance issues, such as reliability and maintainability strategies and condition monitoring systems, before discussing performance assessment and optimisation routes for wind energy systems in low wind speed environments and cold climates. Part four reviews offshore wind energy systems development, from the impact of environmental loads such as wind, waves and ice, to site specific construction and integrated wind farm planning, and of course the critical issues and strategies for offshore operation and maintenance. With its distinguished editors and international teams of contributors, Wind energy systems is a standard reference for wind power engineers, technicians and manufacturers, as well as researchers and academics involved in this expanding field. Reviews the latest developments in the design, construction and operation of large-scale wind energy systems Offers detailed coverage of wind resource assessment and siting methods relevant to wind turbine and wind farm planning Explores operation and maintenance issues, such as reliability and maintainability strategies and condition monitoring systems

Book excerpt: Strength Design for Reinforced-Concrete Hydraulic Structures is written in sufficient detail to not only provide the designer with design procedures, but also to present examples of their application. A review of general detailing requirements, as well as strength and serviceability requirements, create a strong understanding of the strength-design method. Latter chapters feature examples that demonstrate load-factor application, the design of members subjected to combined flexural and axial loads, the design of members subjected to biaxial bending, and the design for shear strength, including provisions for both special straight and curved members.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical handbook of properties for soils and rock contains, in a concise tabular format, the key issues relevant to geotechnical investigations, assessments and designs in common practice. In addition, there are brief notes on the application of the tables. These data tables are compiled for experienced geotechnical professionals who require a reference document to access key information. There is an extensive database of correlations for different applications. The book should provide a useful bridge between soil and rock mechanics theory and its application to practical engineering solutions. The initial chapters deal with the planning of the geotechnical investigation, the classification of the soil and rock properties and some of the more used testing is then covered. Later chapters show the reliability and correlations that are used to convert that data in the interpretative and assessment phase of the project. The final chapters apply some of these concepts to geotechnical design. This book is intended primarily for practicing geotechnical engineers working in investigation, assessment and design, but should provide a useful supplement for postgraduate courses.

Book excerpt: Most of the existing strong motion instrumentation on civil engineering structures is installed and operated as federal, state, university, industry or private applications, in many cases operated as a closed system. This hampers co-operation and data exchange, hampering the acquisition of strong motion and structural data, sometimes even within a single country. There is a powerful need to inform engineers of existing strong motion data and to improve the accessibility of data worldwide. This book will play a role in fulfilling such a need by disseminating state-of-the art information, technology and developments in the strong motion instrumentation of civil engineering structures. The subject has direct implications for the earthquake response of structures, improvements in design for earthquake resistance, and hazard mitigation. Readership: Researchers in earthquake engineering, engineers designing earthquake resistant structures, and producers of strong motion recording equipment.

"Included on the Choice list with the outstanding academic Earth Sciences titles 2008" ... This volume describes simplified dynamic analyses that bridge the gap between the rather limited provisions of design codes and the rather eclectic methods used in sophisticated analyses. Graphs and spreadsheets are included for the ease and speed of use of simplified analyses of: soil slope (in)stability and displacements caused by earthquakes, sand liquefaction and flow caused by earthquakes, dynamic soil-foundation interaction, bearing capacity and additional settlement of shallow foundations, earthquake motion effects on tunnels and shafts, frequent liquefaction potential mitigation measures. A number of comments on the assumptions used in different methods, limitation and factors affecting the results are given. Several case histories are also included in the appendices in order to assess the accuracy and usefulness of the simplified methods. Audience This work is of interest to geotechnical engineers, engineering geologists, earthquake engineers and students.
