Book excerpt: Excerpt from Uruguay's Livestock and Meat Industry Uruguay is a major exporter of wool, meat, and hides and skins. After Argentina, it leads the countries of the Western Hemisphere in exports of beef and veal, even though with Argentina it tends to take either first or second rank among all countries each year in per capita consumption. When this meat enters the list of u.s. Imports, it does so in canned beef form. Uruguay's beef and veal exports have risen faster than production, the former nearly doubling by 1965 over the 5-year average level for 195 6-60, the latter increasing by a little over one-third. Uruguay usually ranks second only to Argentina among Western Hemisphere suppliers of wool in world trade, with the United States and the United Kingdom principal markets. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Argentina's Livestock and Meat Industry Many ranchers vaccinate against the more common diseases, but it is a frequent compla that the vaccines available are not reliable. The government is now helping the veterinar industry to develop standards for foot-and-mouth disease vaccines. In the northern tick zom dipping is commonly practiced. One of Argentina's most hopeful government projects is the control of foot-and-mm disease. The disease is being combatted by quarantining infected areas and bringing these unc control by vaccination of all livestock within these areas. Argentina's cattle and beef industry is based on the productive pastures of the Pam Steers and heifers are put on special fattening pastures soon after weaning and kept there about 12 months until ready for market. Alfalfa pastures are the foundation of this syste although many animals are pastured on rye or other small grains during the winter. Fatten in feed lots, common in the United States, is not practiced. Except for purebred breeding anime Argentine cattle are not fed any grain except when occasionally turned into grain fields ti have failed to produce a crop worth harvesting. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consumers have always been concerned about the quality, and particularly the safety, of the foods they eat. In recent years this concern has taken on additional prominence. Consumer focus on food safety has been sharpened by reports about new risks, such as that posed by "mad cow" disease, and about more familiar sources of risk, such as food borne pathogens, pesticides, and hormones. At the same time, some consumers are in creasingly interested in knowing more about how their food is produced and in selecting products based on production practices. Some of the questions consumers are asking in clude whether food is produced with the use of modern biotechnology, whether it is or ganically produced, how animals are treated in meat and egg production systems, and whether food is produced using traditional methods. Recent trends also show increased consumer demand for a variety of food products that are fresh, tasty, and available on a year-round basis. This has fostered increased global trade in food. For example, consumers in temperate climates such as North America are able to buy raspberries throughout the year, and Europeans can enjoy South American coffee. Trade in processed food products is actually increasing more rapidly than trade in agricultural commodities, further addressing the demand for variety among consumers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the interactions of producers, sellers and consumers of meat across the world, Richard Perren elucidates aspects of the evolution of the international economy and the part played by the investment of capital and the enterprise of individuals. The study utilises the government reports and papers issued by all countries involved in the meat trade, including North and South America, Australia, New Zealand and Britain. Beginning in the nineteenth century allows a comprehensive analysis of how an efficient meat exporting industry was built. The industry required investment, which was part of the general process of economic development. Perren focuses on the nature of the firms involved with the trade, the part played in the industry's development by foreign investment and the encouragement given by governments. Close attention is also paid to the stimulus of war, the impact of animal health and food hygiene regulations on producers and the competing demands of interest groups involved in the food businesses. By taking an historical as well as a contemporary approach, the book contributes to the current discussion on the effectiveness of animal and meat inspection in identifying farm livestock diseases such as tuberculosis and BSE. This study advances our knowledge of the process of food distribution in the industrialising and post-industrial economies, and leads to a comprehensive understanding of an important component of the international food chain.
