Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of genitourinary tumors is an area of recent rapid growth both in the understanding of disease processes and in the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic modalities. During rapid growth phases within any field, it is desirable to reflect on the current 'state of the art'. It is difficult even for experts in reputed areas of advancement to distinguish true advances from false leads, but it is far more difficult yet for those whose expertise lies in other areas to evaluate important advances. Thus, an objective assessment of evolving areas of investigation in the form of a comprehensive review is of considerable value. we have attempted to provide the reader with an over In this volume, view of some of the current areas of investigation in urologic oncology by experts in each area. There often is a tendency for invited papers in books of this nature to lack important critical peer review and therefore, suffer from a lack of objectivity. We have attempted to diminish this problem by the selection of two experts to discuss each subject. We believe that this format has improved the overall quality of the book for two reasons: 1) the know ledge of each contributor that his or her work would be reviewed by a peer 2) the fact that contributions by encourages more rigorous scholarship, and two experts, including the individual insights of each, provides a better per spective for the reader.

Book Synopsis Bladder Tumors and other Topics in Urological Oncology by : M. Pavone-Macaluso
Download or read book Bladder Tumors and other Topics in Urological Oncology written by M. Pavone-Macaluso and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a report of the proceedings of the Second International Urological Course held in the Ettore Majorana Centre in Erice, Sicily from the 4-8 November 1978. The meeting was sponsored by the Urological Group of the EORTC (European Organisation for Research in the Treatment of Cancer), the WHO Collaborating Centre for Bladder Cancer, the European Urological Association, the Italian Research Council (CNR) , Italian League against Tumours, Italian Government and Regional Sicilian Government. Contributions were accepted on the understanding that the editors could make certain changes leading towards a uniformity of style but accepting as a priority the importance of early publication, if necessary at the expense of stylistic perfection. Editorial notes have been inserted at infrequent intervals, sometimes to summarise discussions and at others in an attempt to clarify certain issues or to highlight conflicting opinions. Although the work has been divided amongst the editors and co editors it is only proper to acknowledge that the major role in collating and in correcting much of the material has fallen on Mrs MAske who has also typed the manuscript. We should also like to acknowledge the kindness of the Yorkshire Regional Cancer Organisation who allowed Mrs Aske to devote much of her time to this work, Miss S Barrowby who has also given considerable secretarial assistance and the Department of Medical Photography, st James's University Hospital, Leeds whose staff are responsible for many of the illustrations.
Book Synopsis Treatment Options in Urological Cancer by : Jonathan Waxman
Download or read book Treatment Options in Urological Cancer written by Jonathan Waxman and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer forms a large part of urological practice. Prostate cancer is the most significant and is the second most common cause of male cancer deaths with some 300,000 cases in the USA annually. Cancer of the bladder is also common. While treatment has been primarily surgical, recent years have seen an explosion of new drug therapies for urological cancers. All urologists, whether in training or in practice, need an up-to-date survey of the literature and key findings in this important and controversial field. This book takes each organ in turn (prostate, kidney, bladder, testis and penis) and tackles the controversies head-on by inviting chapters on various (often rival) treatments for each disease. Each section is then concluded by a commentary from the editor which draws together the various strands, outlines the principal areas of consensus and disagreement. Jonathan Waxman is an oncologist who specialises in urological tumours and has developed new treatments for prostate, bladder and kidney cancer and for terminal care, which are now part of standard practice. He founded the Prostate Cancer Charity and helped establish an all-party parliamentary group to improve cancer treatment and research throughout the UK.
