"Slippin' into Darkness," "The Cisco Kid," and - of course - "Low Rider." They combined rock, funk, soul, R&B, jazz, and a strong Latin vibe in their music, they have been awarded two Platinum and eight Gold records in their career. Their album "The World is a Ghetto" was the bestselling release of 1973 and was #444 on the list of "Rolling Stone's Top 500 Albums" list. This unauthorized book follows the group from their early incarnations when Harold Brown and Howard Scott met to form the Creators and then the Night Shift, to their partnership with former Animals lead singer Eric Burdon, to a highly successful career on their own with the core original lineup of Brown, Scott, Lee Oskar, Lonnie Jordan, B.B. Dickerson, Papa Dee Allen, and Charles Miller. The story also follows the band through their later, leaner years, the tragic deaths of two members, and the conflicts that led to a fissure and a split of performing entities that continues to this day. Featuring original interviews, archival research, and musical analysis and commentary, "Slippin' Out of Darkness: The Story of WAR" tells the tale of one of the most unique bands in the history of Classic Rock-era music.

Book excerpt: The ultimate book-lover's fantasy, this sparkling debut is a "delight of magic and literature, love and adventure" (Kat Howard) featuring a young scholar with the power to bring literary characters into the world. For his entire life, Charley Sutherland has concealed a magical ability he can't quite control: He can bring characters from books into the real world. But when literary characters start causing trouble throughout the city and threatening to destroying the world, he learns he's not the only one with his ability. Now it's up to Charley and his reluctant older brother, Rob, to stop them--hopefully before they reach The End. Praise for The Unlikely Escape of Uriah Heep: "A star-studded literary tour and a tangled mystery and a reflection on reading itself; it's a pure delight." --Alix E. Harrow, Hugo Award-winning author "This beautifully-written novel is an exploration of the power fiction wields -- the power to inform and to change, even to endanger, our everyday world." --Louisa Morgan, author of A Secret History of Witches "Equal parts sibling rivalry, crackling mystery, and Dickensian battle royale, it'll be one of your most fun reads this year." --Mike Chen, author of Here and Now and Then

Book excerpt: From Black Sabbath to Big Black, a ride through the evolution, diversity, and influence of genre-defying heavy music. It began with the Beatles’ “Helter Skelter.” It was distilled to its dark essence by Black Sabbath. And it has flourished into a vibrant modern underground, epitomized by Newcastle’s Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs. This is the evolution of heavy music. The voyage is as varied as it is illuminating: from the lysergic blunt trauma of Blue Cheer to the locked grooves of Funkadelic, the aural frightmares of Faust to the tectonic crush of Sleep, alighting on post-punk, industrial, grunge, stoner rock, and numerous other genres along the way. Ranging from household names to obscure cult heroes and heroines, Electric Wizards demonstrates how each successive phase of heavy music was forged by what came before, outlining a rich and eclectic lineage that extends far beyond the usual boundaries of heavy rock or heavy metal. It extols those who did things differently, who introduced something fresh and exciting into this elemental tradition, whether by design, accident, or sheer chance. In doing so, Electric Wizards weaves an entirely new tapestry of heavy music.

Book excerpt: Uriah Heep and I had a lot in common. We were both Solicitor's clerks in London. Indeed, I became a Solicitor and had rooms in Lincoln's Inn, not far from where Heep's creator, Charles Dickens, introduced us to his protégé in his 1850 novel 'David Copperfield'. Uriah himself was marked by his insincerity and cloying 'umbleness. Today the fictional character Uriah Heep has become a byword for a falsely humble hypocrite. Trouble is I found a good few Uriah Heeps in the legal profession and on its periphery in my 30 years as a Solicitor over a century and a half later. These 'professionals' had learnt nothing from the lessons of Mr Dickens. Very 'Eavy Very 'Umble was, most fittingly, the first album released by the rock band Uriah Heep - in 1970. The genuinely very 'umble Mick Box is the only surviving member from that first line-up who is still in the band. He was part of the 1972 group that conquered the world with the definitive Demons and Wizards album - David Byron, Ken Hensley, Lee Kerslake, Gary Thain and Mick himself. It was the song 'Paradise and the Spell' that got me hooked and led to my enduring admiration for all things Heep. I had just left my Church of England Primary School in 1969 in Brentwood in Essex when the incarnation of Dicken's Uriah Heep emerged. For many years drummer Lee Kerslake lived in Brentwood not far from the Robin Hood Pub where he'd often be found playing the piano and singing along with the locals. A very upbeat and jovial character who told me outside his bank in the High Street in the autumn of 1984 that David Byron "is finished". Lee's time in Brentwood also came to a premature end - he soon had to sell his home to pay the legal fees and costs in his disastrous litigation in the United States with a certain Ozzy Osbourne and his wife Sharon. All over his time with the band Blizzard of Ozz and his unpaid royalties off two albums. The Prince of Darkness had cast Lee Kerslake into a Hell on Earth and it certainly ruined Lee's health in the long term. His lawyers, in hindsight, needed shooting. Sue Ozzy and Sharon - in the United States moreover - at your peril! I'd love to know the legal advice Lee was given.

Book excerpt: It has been reviled, dismissed, attacked, and occasionally been the subject of Congressional hearings, but still, the genre of music known as heavy metal maintains not only its market share in the recording and downloading industry, but also as a cultural force that has united millions of young and old fans across the globe. Characterized by blaring distorted guitars, drum solos, and dramatic vibrato, the heavy metal movement headbanged its way to the popular culture landscape with bands like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath the 1970s. Motley Crue and Metallica made metal a music phenomenon in the 1980s. Heavy metal continues to evolve today with bands like Mastodon and Lamb of God. Providing an extensive overview of the music, fashion, films, and philosophies behind the movement, this inclusive encyclopedia chronicles the history and development of heavy metal, including sub-movements such as death metal, speed metal, grindcore, and hair metal. Essential and highly entertaining reading for high school and undergraduate courses in popular music studies, communications, media studies, and cultural studies, the Encyclopedia of Heavy Metal Music and Culture offers a guide to the ultimate underground music, exploring its rich cultural diversity, resilience, and adaptability. Entries for musicians include a discography for those wanting to start or develop their music collections.

Uriah Heep are an English rock band formed in London in 1969 and are regarded as one of the seminal hard rock acts of the early 1970s. Uriah Heep's progressive/art rock/heavy metal fusion's distinctive features have always been massive keyboards sound, strong vocal harmonies and (in the early years) David Byron's operatic vocals. Twelve of the band's albums have made it to the UK Albums Chart (Return to Fantasy reached No. 7 in 1975) while of the fifteen Billboard 200 Uriah Heep albums Demons and Wizards was the most successful (#23, 1972). In the late 1970s the band had massive success in Germany, where the "Lady in Black" single was a big hit. With Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin Uriah Heep has become one of the top band in the early 70's and also people like to call these four bands "The Big 4" of Hard Rock. Born in London, Hensley moved with his parents, three brothers and sister to Stevenage, Hertfordshire in 1945. He started to learn how to play guitar at the age of 12, from a Bert Weedon manual. Book excerpt: Few forms of music elicit such strong reactions as does heavy metal. Embraced by millions of fans, it has also attracted a chorus of critics, who have denounced it as a corrupter of youth—even blamed it for tragedies like the murders at Columbine. Deena Weinstein argues that these fears stem from a deep misunderstanding of the energetic, rebellious culture of metal, which she analyzes, explains, and defends. She interprets all aspects of the metal world—the music and its makers, its fans, its dress code, its lyrics—and in the process unravels the myths, misconceptions, and truths about an irreverent subculture that has endured and evolved for twenty years.

Book excerpt: Twenty-something guitarist Aksel stutters when he sings, and the latest reviews say he has the voice of a crow with throat plague. That’s not a compliment, even for the avant-garde music his band Perkeros plays. Aksel is having a hard time keeping the band together, stopping his girlfriend from kicking him out, and not getting eaten by his drummer (who happens to be a cranky brown bear). There are also the rival bands that Perkeros find themselves in battle with to save the city from supernatural forces set loose by ancient music. The key to it all could be in the music Aksel hears in his dreams—if it doesn’t drive him mad first. With a visual soundtrack that blasts off the page, Sing No Evil is a wild ride through otherworldly dangers and the power of pure rock’n’roll.
