Book excerpt: Continued urbanization, characterized by increased land coverage by impervious surfaces, has led to increased volumes of stormwater runoff and decreased water quality in many previously forested or suburban watersheds. The goal of this study was to assess the impacts of increased impervious area and its connectedness on water quantity and quality in stormwater runoff for two drainage basins in the Rapid Creek watershed in Rapid City, South Dakota. Using a parameter calibration technique incorporating the US EPAs storm water management model (SWMM) and the parameter estimation software PEST, two models were developed to represent the current state of development in the basins. Using a parameter unique to SWMM, the subarea routing parameter, the hydraulically connected impervious areas (CIA) were estimated then subsequently utilized in the calibration and history-matching of the models to closely resemble the data from two years of instantaneous flow. The calibrated CIA parameters were then compared against a previously developed empirical equation used in the current Rapid City infrastructure design manual. This comparison served a dual purpose: to assure that the models represent realistic interpretations of the actual conditions on the watersheds; and to assess where the two watersheds fall on the scale of connected impervious area classifications. The results of this study emphasize that the degree of connection between the impervious surfaces has a significant influence on the volume and peak flow rates occurring at the watershed outlet with increases of 6 and 3 times, respectively, between the two models. The results indicate that disconnecting the impervious area along a watershed surface leads to not only lowered quantities of runoff at the outlet but an increase in the quality of said runoff. The research presents the use of SWMMs subarea routing parameter to represent the connected impervious area, and establishes its use as an important physical characteristic in hydrologic modeling. The parameter calibration technique developed can be used by municipal entities to more accurately represent the connected impervious areas impact on water quantity and quality on urban and suburban watersheds.

Its route continues through Rapid City, SD, completing its flow as it enters the Cheyenne River, approximately 20 miles east of Rapid City. This research focuses on nonpoint source pollutants and their effects on the health of Rapid Creek within city limits. Over a period of two months, the water quality of Rapid Creek was tested at five different sites. Temperature, pH and dissolved oxygen content were the physical properties collected. Concentrations of nitrates, phosphates, chlorides and total suspended solids were also determined. A final analysis of these seven properties was performed to determine if nonpoint source pollution affects Rapid Creek.
