Book excerpt: This dissertation examines the trends of household energy consumption in China during two recent decades and explores socio-economic factors, such as household wealth, urbanization, and lifestyle changes, that influenced the changes. At the national and multi-regional level, structural decomposition analysis of input-output tables is used to calculate and analyze indirect energy use for urban and rural households. This approach enables examination of the influence of key macroeconomic factors of the changes in household indirect energy consumption in a shift share fashion. At the household level, this dissertation contrasts the lifestyles of urban households, rural households, and rural-to-urban migrants based on survey data from the Chinese Household Income Projects. The consumer lifestyle approach is used to link household indirect energy use to household expenditures and multivariate analysis is used to explore key factors affecting indirect energy use at the household level. Structural decomposition analysis indicates that household consumption mainly drove the rise of indirect energy use while energy efficiency improvements in production technology offset most of the increment. Population growth and urbanization played an important role in driving up indirect energy use between 1987 and 2007. Rapid urbanization and population migration from hinterland to coastal regions contributed heavily to regional differences in the rise of household indirect energy use across China. At the household level, household indirect energy use is affected in a statistically significant manner by climate, income, household size, and housing floor area. Several policy recommendations follow from this. First, China should further encourage renewable energy and promote clean-coal technologies in electric power generation. This is particularly important as household move from coal and other fuels toward electricity usage. For space heating, China should gradually switch from coal to natural gas and liberalize its central heating market. Second, China should adopt stringent energy efficiency standards for home appliances and promote highly efficient products by labeling, offering subsidies, tax credits, or low interest loans to households to encourage their use. Last, China seriously needs to consider securing a supply of energy that is sufficient to meet it rapidly rising household demand for energy.

Faced with challenges of energy resource depletion and natural environment deterioration, China has been intensifying its efforts on energy conservation and emissions reductions in the residential sector. In this thesis, I present an analysis of household operational energy consumption in urban China through empirical evidence from Jinan, the capital city of eastern China's Shandong Province. With data from a survey of approximately 4,000 households and spatial analysis of 23 urban neighborhoods, I summarize key household socio-economic and demographic characteristics, dwelling unit physical attributes, appliance ownership, and usage control, as well as neighborhood characteristics of density, mixed use, solar gain, and wind flow. Based on a multilevel regression model, I examine the household, neighborhood, and cross-level interaction effects on in-home operational energy consumption. The research reveals that operational usage accounts for a predominantly large portion of total residential energy consumption in Jinan, and operational energy consumption patterns vary greatly across households in different neighborhood typologies. The multilevel analysis shows that six household characteristics are identified as having a positive, statistically significant relationship with greater energy usage: higher household income, presence of three or more adults and/or a child, larger dwelling unit area, and ownership of one or more air conditioners. Among neighborhood characteristics, higher floor area ratio is found to associate with lower operational energy consumption. In cross-level interaction effects, higher building function mix may weaken the positive effect of household income on operational energy consumption, and higher neighborhood porosity is correlated with higher energy consumption for households living on top floors and/or with electric heating.

From 1984-2000, the program conducted over 25,000 household energy surveys in 45 cities spanning 12 countries and 3 continents. Additionally, GIS mapping software was used to compile a biomass database of vegetation patterns surrounding 34 cities. Using this rich set of geographic, biological, and socioeconomic data, the authors describe problems and policy options associated with each stage in the energy transition. The authors show how the poorest are most vulnerable to changes in energy markets and demonstrate how the collection of biomass fuel contributes to deforestation. Their book serves as an important contribution to development studies, and as a guide for policymakers hoping to encourage sustainable energy markets and an improved quality of life for growing urban populations.

Book excerpt: Driven by rapid urbanization and increasing household incomes, residential energy consumption in urban China has been growing steadily in the past decade, posing critical energy and greenhouse gas emission challenges. Operations represent the most energy consuming phase in the lifecycle of a residential neighborhood, accounting for 80%-90% of neighborhood lifecycle energy consumption. Although a number of research efforts have focused on operational energy consumption at the household or building scale, few attempts have been made to understand the variation in energy consumption patterns across the neighborhood scale in the China context. This thesis presents research on the operational energy consumption and GHG emissions in the residential sector in Jinan, a medium-size city in eastern China. Specifically, based upon four different neighborhood typologies identified in Jinan - Superblock, Enclave, Grid, and Traditional - I examine the relationship between neighborhood form and two components of operational energy consumption: in-home and common-area. The research follows two pathways. For in-home energy consumption, I use household data collected from nine Jinan neighborhoods representing the four different typologies and apply multivariate regression techniques to examine effects on fuel choice, appliance ownership, and energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. For common area energy use, I develop a deterministic estimation framework to calculate the consumption level and share by different end uses. The research shows that from the operational energy consumption perspective, China is gradually catching up with the industrialized countries, with per household energy consumption levels in the surveyed neighborhoods reaching approximately 1/3 of the U.S. average. After accounting for electricity generation and transmission/distribution, more than 90% of neighborhood residential energy used in Jinan comes directly or indirectly from coal, resulting in considerable GHG emissions due to coal's carbon-intensity. In-home consumption accounts for 90% of total neighborhood operational energy use; the primary influencing factors include household income and size, presence of children, home ownership, living area, and households' awareness towards saving energy. Neighborhood form, on its own, has a moderate impact, mainly through apparent effects on household energy source choice and appliance ownership. The research suggests that the Enclave - featuring moderate compactness, high presence of mid-rise buildings, a relatively organized building layout, and diverse land uses and neighborhood functions - represents a relatively energy efficient neighborhood form in the context of urban China. The Enclave potentially limits on-site coal use, improves thermal efficiency, reduces the demand for space cooling, lowers the consumption by elevators and water pumps, and facilitates the use of solar energy. Additional options for energy conservation and GHG mitigation in urban China's residential sector include enabling flexible control of space heating and accelerating the transition from coal to cleaner energy sources.

This article uses the data of 285 prefecture-level cities in China from 2006 to 2019, and four areas are obtained by a region-partitioning method named "three lines" (the Qinling-Huaihe Line, Huhuanyong Line, and Shanhaiguan Line). The spatial econometric model is applied to study the residential electricity consumption in China and its influencing factors from the perspective of regional heterogeneity. The results showed that: 1) Based on the "three lines", the regional heterogeneity of residential electricity consumption in China is significant; 2) Region 1, which is the north of the Shanhaiguan Line, is significantly different from other regions; 3) Positive spatial correlation occurs in the per capita domestic electricity consumption of urban residents, with obvious regional heterogeneity of each influencing factor, among which household appliances are an important intermediary. Relevant policy implications are put forward based on the findings.

Book excerpt: China and the rest of the world are facing the challenge of meeting energy demand sustainably. Household-level energy consumption is a large ultimate driving force of a nation's energy use. Realizing a sustainable energy future will require behavioral change on the consumption side. In this context, examining the role of neighborhoods is important since neighborhoods are the building blocks of China's urban growth and the neighborhoods we build now will have a long-lasting effect on households' lifestyles of energy consumption. This research uses Jinan as a context for Chinese cities, and tries to understand how neighborhood design influences households' direct energy consumption, including travel and in-home energy use, through the influence on urban households' lifestyle. This research utilized an approach combining qualitative and quantitative methods, and finds that: (1) Household residential and vehicle ownership choice is made as a bundle reflecting the chosen lifestyle, making the combined evaluation of both travel and residential energy use possible; (2) Households belonging to different lifestyle groups have different decision-making mechanisms, suggesting the need for targeted design and policies; and, (3) Neighborhood design influences household direct energy consumption both through the ownership component choice and the usage component. By enabling more lifestyle bundle choices and providing new experiences and feedback, breaking old habits and creating new ones, energy-efficient neighborhood design can "lock in" households' lifestyles for a longer period of time via the lifestyle bundle choice effect. Design, therefore, likely has a larger and more robust impact in the long run than one-time or short-term incentives. This qualitative-quantitative mixed-method study contributes to a bridging of the literatures on consumer behavior, lifestyle, built environment and travel behavior, residential energy consumption, and energy demand analysis. It also provides new insights into the interaction of residence and mobility as a lifestyle bundle, and enriches the empirical findings in the developing world. For policy makers and designers, this research presents a theoretical basis for the development of potential evaluation tools and a standard for energy efficient neighborhood design and offers a pilot method for the selection, and suggested range, of indicators for energy efficient neighborhood design.
