This book was released on 2014-10-24 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a world where the loss of sea ice and thawing of coastal grounds in the north, and renewed marine transgression and an increase in the frequency of extreme weather events globally, are becoming commonplace. This volume presents a timely examination of coasts, the geological environment at particular risk, as global warming brings on this new reality. In 23 papers, low lying, mainly siliciclastic coasts are reviewed, described and analysed, under a variety of climates in quasi-stable tectonic settings along passive, trailing-continental edges from Polar Regions to the Tropics. Examples include coast of the Arctic seas, temperate to tropical eastern shores of the Americas, western Portugal, Mediterranean, Persian Gulf, South Africa and Australia. The entire coastal zone (landscape) is considered ranging from geophysical processes and products to biological entities including the adaption of Native People in various climatic zones. Knowledge of the state of the coasts now, and how the coastal plain has evolved since Late Pleistocene, is crucial for any realistic planning for the future.

Book Synopsis Coasts and Estuaries by : Eric Wolanski
Download or read book Coasts and Estuaries written by Eric Wolanski and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2019-01-24 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coasts and Estuaries: The Future provides valuable information on how we can protect and maintain natural ecological structures while also allowing estuaries to deliver services that produce societal goods and benefits. These issues are addressed through chapters detailing case studies from estuaries and coastal waters worldwide, presenting a full range of natural variability and human pressures. Following this, a series of chapters written by scientific leaders worldwide synthesizes the problems and offers solutions for specific issues graded within the framework of the socio-economic-environmental mosaic. These include fisheries, climate change, coastal megacities, evolving human-nature interactions, remediation measures, and integrated coastal management. The problems faced by half of the world living near coasts are truly a worldwide challenge as well as an opportunity for scientists to study commonalities and differences and provide solutions. This book is centered around the proposed DAPSI(W)R(M) framework, where drivers of basic human needs requires activities that each produce pressures. The pressures are mechanisms of state change on the natural system and Impacts on societal welfare (including well-being). These problems then require responses, which are the solutions relating to governance, socio-economic and cultural measures (Scharin et al 2016). Covers estuaries and coastal seas worldwide, integrating their commonality, differences and solutions for sustainability Includes global case studies from leading worldwide contributors, with accompanying boxes highlighting a synopsis about a particular estuary and coastal sea, making all information easy to find Presents full color images to aid the reader in a better understanding of details of each case study Provides a multi-disciplinary approach, linking biology, physics, climate and social sciences

Book Synopsis Cenozoic Stratigraphy of the Mackenzie Delta, Northwest Territories by : Frederick Griffin Young
Download or read book Cenozoic Stratigraphy of the Mackenzie Delta, Northwest Territories written by Frederick Griffin Young and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The authors have documented the distribution of the main lithostratigraphic and biostratigraphic units that evolved during Cenozoic time through complex, but discrete, deltaic sequences, modified by important structural and erosional events and nondepositional intervals. The stratigraphy framework established will provide a basis for understanding the evolution of this Cenozoic sedimentary basin, which has potential to contribute greatly to Canada's future energy resources." --

Book Synopsis Permian and Triassic Stratigraphy of Mackenzie Delta, and the British, Barn, and Richardson Mountains, Yukon and Northwest Territories by : James Dixon
Download or read book Permian and Triassic Stratigraphy of Mackenzie Delta, and the British, Barn, and Richardson Mountains, Yukon and Northwest Territories written by James Dixon and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The area covered in this study extends from the northwesternmost part of Yukon eastward into the Richardson Mountains and under the Mackenzie Delta. The investigation aims to expand on previous stratigraphic studies and proposes formal nomenclature for unnamed parts of the Permian succession in the area. Information is provided on the Permian and Triassic stratigraphy and lithology of the area. Correlations between the various occurrences in the study area are attempted as well as more regional correlations with Permian and Triassic strata in the Yukon, mainland Northwest Territories, and adjacent Alaska. Paleogeographic reconstructions and the economic potential of Permian and Triassic strata in the study area are also discussed.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Study of the faunal events that occurred during the Oligocene and Miocene, focusing on the agglutinated foraminifers because they are associated with deltaic and deep-water facies, which contain proven hydrocarbon reservoirs in the Beaufort-Mackenzie Basin. The study describes their distribution and analyzes mechanisms that possibly controlled their occurrence and preservation and thus their biostratigraphic and paleoecological value using samples from nine wells near the depocentre of the Beaufort-Mackenzie Basin. Approximately 17.4 km of stratigraphic section were sampled. Samples, derived from well cuttings, were studied in 30-60 m intervals from the first downhole occurrence of agglutinated foraminiferal specimens to the total depth of the well.
Book Synopsis Neogene and Quaternary Quantitative Palynostratigraphy and Paleoclimatology from Sections in Yukon and Adjacent Northwest Territories and Alaska by : J. M. White

White and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study provides a framework biostratigraphy for pollen and spores in the Neogene and Quaternary of Yukon and adjacent Northwest Territories & Alaska. This biozonation is useful for correlating continental rocks with rocks on the northern continental margin, including the petroliferous Beaufort-Mackenzie Basin. This framework biozonation achieves an absolute chronology based on the study of many continental sections where ages are determined by independent and absolute measures. The study assembles the biozonation from seven sections and one borehole, and the palynological spectra from 163 samples from these sections were grouped & averaged to produce 21 composite spectra that depict the long-term pattern of vegetation change ranging from Early Miocene to late Quaternary. Pollen and spores are grouped and summed by environmental tolerances and physiognomy of the modern families & genera of plants to which they are related. Using these groups, pollen and spore ratios are drawn to track environmental parameters (temperature, forest canopy cover, and paludification) of the study sites. Biostratigraphic and paleoecological patterns are explained in terms of known changes in the global climate and the climatic effects of regional tectonics. Six assemblage zones and five subzones are proposed to describe the palynological succession.
