Book excerpt: The "masterful oral history" (Globe and Mail) that was praised, condemned, admired, vilified, eagerly devoured and hotly debated. This is the story of UCC - the institution that has educated the sons of the Canadian establishment for almost seven decades. In Old Boys, former students’ recollections are woven together to form a remarkably vivid portrait not merely of a private boys’ school in down town Toronto, but of the evolving society it reflects. Candid and arresting, controversial and revealing, Old Boys is an unforgettable look inside one of Canada’s most prestigious academic institutions.

Book Synopsis Lion, the Eagle, and Upper Canada by : Elizabeth Jane Errington
Download or read book Lion, the Eagle, and Upper Canada written by Elizabeth Jane Errington and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1987-10-01 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Errington argues that in order to appreciate the evolution of Upper Canadian beliefs, particularly the development of political ideology, it is necessary to understand the various and changing perceptions of the United States and of Great Britain held by different groups of colonial leaders. Colonial ideology inevitably evolved in response to changing domestic circumstances and to the colonists' knowledge of altering world affairs. It is clear, however, that from the arrival of the first loyalists in 1748 to the passage of the Naturalization Bill in 1828, the attitudes and beliefs of the Upper Canadian elite reflect the fact that the colony was a British- American community. Errington reveals that Upper Canada was never as anti-American as popular lore suggests, even in the midst of the War of 1812. By the mid 1820s, largely due to their conflicting views of Great Britain and the United States, Upper Canadians were irrevocably divided. The Tory administration argued that only by decreasing the influence of the United States, enforcing a conservative British mould on colonial society, and maintaining strong ties with the Empire could Upper Canada hope to survive. The forces of reform, on the other hand, asserted that Upper Canada was not and could not become a re-creation of Great Britain and that to deny its position in North America could only lead to internal dissent and eventual amalgamation with the United States. Errington's description of these early attempts to establish a unique Upper Canadian identity reveals the historical background of a dilemma which has yet to be resolved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Upper Canada College, 1829-1892: With Contributions by Old Upper Canada College Boys, Lists of Head-Boys, Exhibitioners, University Scholars and Medallists, and a Roll of the School A History of Upper Canada College needs no introduction to the class to whom this book especially appeals, except for the opportunity it offers of thanking many of them for the kind assistance the editors have received in its preparation. The object has been to produce a history of the College, written for the most part by Old College Boys themselves. Among those, besides the Editors, who have contributed to the volume or furnished materials for it, are: The Rev. Henry Scadding, D. D., who entered the College in 1829; Hon. John Beverley Robinson, 1830; William Wallbridge, Sr., 1833; William Wedd, M. A., 1837; W. Thomson, Esq., 1837; C. J. Rykert, Q. C., 1846; N. O. Walker, M. A., M. D., 1847; J. Ross Robertson, Esq., 1850; Rupert E. Kingsford, M. A., LL. B., 1859; Rev. T. F. Fotheringham, M. A., 1863; D. R. Keys, M. A., 1868; W. N. Ponton, M. A., 1870; G. G. S. Lindsey, M. A., 1871; Rev. J. Street Macklem, M. A., 1874; A. H. Young, M. A., 1878; A. A. Macdonald, M. A., 1879; S. B. Leacock, B. A., 1881; J. E. Hall, Secretary of the Canadian Cricket Association. The chapters are classified, and the story told under the regimes of the Head Masters, beginning with that of the Rev. Joseph Harris, D. D., the first to hold the position. It is impossible within reasonable limits to be at the same time comprehensive and exhaustive. It has not been the aim to make the work biographical. The lives of Old College Boys, however prominent, have not been dwelt on save in so far as was necessary to illustrate their connection with the College. Lists of Head-Boys, Exhibitioners, University Scholars and Medallists, together with the Roll of the School from 1829 to 1892, and the Cricket teams during the same period are appended.
