Book excerpt: In a recent paper, Hayes and Marcel developed a finite element method for determining upper bounds on the limit load for perfectly plastic plane stress problems. By means of a finite element technique, they constructed a parametric family of kinematically admissible velocity fields and then obtained a best upper bound by minimizing the associated load multiplier. The present paper describes a complementary method for finding the lower bound on the limit load for plane stress problems. In this case, the finite element technique is used to construct a parametric family of equilibrium stress fields. The determination of the best lower bound then becomes a problem of mathematical programming; the maximization of the objective function, the load multiplier, subject to the constraint that the yield condition not be violated. The lower bound method and an upper bound method similar to that of Hayes and Marcal were coded as FORTRAN IV programs and results were obtained for a number of problems.

Book excerpt: In this dissertation, the plastic theory of limit analysis is discussed in conjunction with many associated yield criteria, which are subsequently used to develop a numerical method for the analysis of upper-bounds on plastic structural failure. These numerical methods involve finite element techniques which are presented along with various element types and their benefits to the problem of upper-bound limit analysis. Minimisation techniques, especially the Simplex method, are discussed with attention being drawn towards the application of constraints and the possible effects of these constraints are outlined. Mesh refinement procedures are then discussed in relation to upper-bound limit analysis and their effects are demonstrated for some analytical problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developments in Geotechnical Engineering, Volume 7: Limit Analysis and Soil Plasticity covers the theory and applications of limit analysis as applied to soil mechanics. Organized into 12 chapters, the book presents an introduction to the modern development of theory of soil plasticity and includes rock-like material. The first four chapters of the book describe the technique of limit analysis, beginning with the historical review of the subject and the assumptions on which it is based, and then covering various aspects of available techniques of limit analysis. The subsequent chapters deal with the applications of limit analysis to what may be termed “classical soil mechanics problems that include bearing capacity of footings, lateral earth pressure problems, and stability of slopes. In many cases, comparisons of limit analysis solution and conventional limit equilibrium and slip-like solutions are also presented. Other chapters deal with the advances in bearing-capacity problem of concrete blocks or rock and present theoretical and experimental results of various concrete bearing problems. The concluding chapter examines elastic-plastic soil and elastic-plastic-fracture models for concrete materials. This book is an ideal resource text to geotechnical engineers and soil mechanics researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last ten years, our understanding of the perfect plasticity and the associated flow rule assumption on which limit analysis is based has increased considerably. Many extensions and advances have been made in applications of limit analysis to the area of soil dynamics, in particular, to earthquake-induced slope failure and landslide problems and to earthquake-induced lateral earth pressures on rigid retaining structures. The purpose of the book therefore is in part to discuss the validity of the upper bound work (or energy) method of limit analysis in a form that can be appreciated by a practicing soil engineer, and in part to provide a compact and up-to-date summary of recent advances in the applications of limit analysis to earthquake-induced stability problems in soil mechanics.

Book excerpt: To predict loading limits for structures and structural elements is one of the oldest and most important tasks of engineers. Among the theoretical and numericalmethodsavailableforthispurpose,so-called“DirectMethods”,- bracing Limit- and Shakedown Analysis, play an eminent role due to the fact that they allow rapid access to the requested information in mathematically constructive manners. The collection of papers in this book is the outcome of a workshop held at Aachen University of Technology in November 2007. The individual c- tributions stem in particular from the areas of new numerical developments renderingthemethodsmoreattractive forindustrialdesign, extensionsofthe general methodology to new horizons of application, probabilistic approaches and concrete technological applications. The papers are arranged according to the order of the presentations in the workshop and give an excellent insight into state-of-the-art developments in this broad and growing ?eld of research. The editors warmly thank all the scientists, who have contributed by their outstanding papers to the quality of this edition. Special thanks go to Jaan Simon for his great help in putting together the manuscript to its ?nal shape.
