Book excerpt: Recent rural economies in the mountainous area of Western and Central Zagori (Epirus-NW Greece) range from nomadic specialised pastoralism to sedentary agro-pastoralism. Recent large scale pastoralism in Greece depended on several conditions which arguably did not exist until historical times: a market for the exchange of pastoral and arable produce, summer pasture created by upland clearance and consolidated blocks of winter pasture on the fallow land of lowland estates. On the other hand, the existence of an urban market and extensive upland and lowland pastures are less critical to the sedentary agro-pastoral economy. The purpose of this study is to caution against the uncritical use of traditional practices as analogies for antiquity, to suggest that the greatest value of studying traditional rural economies may be as a guide to the questions we should be asking about the past, and to propose a new way with which to approach ethno-archaeological contexts.

The form and character of these landscapes are the consequence of a long history of change. Their distinctiveness is the result of complex interaction between the natural environment and human intervention. Based on the results of an archaeological field survey, this book attempts to unravel the many strands in the evolution of one particular upland area of South Wales, Mynydd Du and Fforest Fawr, part of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The history of human activity in this area can be traced back to the earliest stages of climatic warming after the end of the last Ice Age when Mesolithic hunters followed migrating herds onto the less densely wooded high ground. Seasonal visiting was continued by early farmers until, from the beginning of the Bronze Age, more intensive patterns of land use emerged. After the end of the Roman military presence evidence for mainly seasonal occupation once again becomes widespread, during the Medieval and Post-Medieval periods. This was followed by the intensive exploitation of the area's mineral wealth during the Industrial Revolution and after, giving rise to some of the most dramatic features of the present-day landscape.

As a result of federal mandates for cultural resource investigation, more archaeological work has been undertaken there, beginning in the 1970s, than has occurred at any other comparably sized area in Louisiana or at most other localities in the southeastern United States. The extensive program of survey, excavation, testing, and large-scale data and artifact recovery, as well as historic and archival research, has yielded a massive amount of information. While superbly curated by the U.S. Army, the material has been difficult to examine and comprehend in its totality. With this volume, Anderson and Smith collate and synthesize all the information into a comprehensive whole. Included are previous investigations, an overview of local environmental conditions, base military history and architecture, and the prehistoric and historic cultural sequence. An analysis of location, environmental, and assemblage data employing a sample of more than 2,800 sites and isolated finds was used to develop a predictive model that identifies areas where significant cultural resources are likely to occur.
