Book excerpt: Motivated by practical optimization problems occurring in energy systems with regenerative energy supply, Debora Mahlke formulates and analyzes multistage stochastic mixed-integer models. For their solution, the author proposes a novel decomposition approach which relies on the concept of splitting the underlying scenario tree into subtrees. Based on the formulated models from energy production, the algorithm is computationally investigated and the numerical results are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer Arithmetic Volume III is a compilation of key papers in computer arithmetic on floating-point arithmetic and design. The intent is to show progress, evolution, and novelty in the area of floating-point arithmetic. This field has made extraordinary progress since the initial software routines on mainframe computers have evolved into hardware implementations in processors spanning a wide range of performance. Nevertheless, these papers pave the way to the understanding of modern day processors design where computer arithmetic are supported by floating-point units. The goal of Volume III is to collect the defining document for floating-point arithmetic and many of the key papers on the implementation of both binary and decimal floating-point arithmetic into a single volume. Although fewer than forty papers are included, their reference lists will direct the interested reader to other excellent work that could not be included here. Volume III is specifically oriented to the needs of designers and users of both general-purpose computers and special-purpose digital processors. The book should also be useful to systems engineers, computer architects, and logic designers. It is also intended to serve as a primary text for a course on floating-point arithmetic, as well as a supplementary text for courses in digital arithmetic and high-speed signal processing. This volume is part of a 3 volume set: Computer Arithmetic Volume I Computer Arithmetic Volume II Computer Arithmetic Volume III The full set is available for sale in a print-only version. Contents:OverviewFloating-Point AdditionFloating-Point MultiplicationRoundingFused Multiply AddFloating-Point DivisionElementary FunctionsDecimal Floating-Point Arithmetic Readership: Graduate students and research professionals interested in computer arithmetic. Key Features:The papers that are included cover the key concepts needed to develop efficient (fast, small and low-power) floating-point processing unitsThe papers include presentations by the initial developers in their own words to better explain the basic techniquesIncludes five papers on decimal floating-point arithmetic, which has been added to the IEEE standardKeywords:Floating-Point Addition;Floating-Point Multiplication;Floating-Point Division;Decimal Floating-Point Arithmetic

Book excerpt: Biological and Synthetic Polymer Networks contains 36 papers selected from the papers presented at NETWORKS 86, the 8th Polymer Networks Group Meeting. NETWORKS 86 was held in Elsinore, Denmark, on 31 August 5 September 1986. A total of nine invited main lectures and 68 contributed papers were presented at the meeting. A wide range of important biological and synthetic materials consist of three-dimensional polymer networks. The properties range from very stiff structural materials to extremely flexible rubbery materials and gels. Most polymer networks are permanent networks held together by covalent bonds. Such networks are insoluble but they may swell considerably in good solvents. Polymer networks held together by ionic bonds, hydrogen bonds or so-called entanglements are of a more temporary nature. At long times they exhibit a tendency to flow, and they are soluble in good solvents. The paper by Professor Walther Burchard and his co-workers, 'Covalent, Thermoreversible and Entangled Networks: An Attempt at Comparison', serves as a general introduction to polymer networks. The book contains both theoretical and experimental papers on the formation, characterisation and properties of polymer networks. Two topics were given special sessions at the meeting, namely Biological Networks and Swelling of Polymer Networks.

Book excerpt: "Beyond Wavelets" presents state-of-the-art theories, methods, algorithms, and applications of mathematical extensions for classical wavelet analysis. Wavelets, introduced 20 years ago byMorlet and Grossmann and developed very rapidly during the 1980's and 1990's, has created a common link between computational mathematics and other disciplines of science and engineering.Classical wavelets have provided effective and efficient mathematical tools for time-frequency analysis which enhances and replaces the Fourier approach. However, with the current advances in science and technology, there is an immediate need to extend wavelet mathematical tools as well. "Beyond Wavelets" presents a list of ideas and mathematicalfoundations for such extensions, including: continuous and digital ridgelets, brushlets, steerable wavelet packets, contourlets, eno-wavelets, spline-wavelet frames, and quasi-affine wavelets. Wavelet subband algorithms are extended to pyramidal directional and nonuniform filter banks. In addition, this volume includes amethod for tomographic reconstruction using a mechanical image model and a statistical study for independent adaptive signal representation.Investigators already familiar with wavelet methods from areas such as engineering, statistics, and mathematics will benefit by owning this volume. *Curvelets, Contourlets, Ridgelets, *Digital Implementation of Ridgelet Packets*Steerable Wavelet Packets*Essentially Non-Oscillatory Wavelets*Medical Imaging*Non-Uniform Filter Banks*Spline-wavelet frames and *Vanishing Moment Recovery Functions

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most recent methods in various branches of lattice path and enumerative combinatorics along with relevant applications are nicely grouped together and represented in this research contributed volume. Contributions to this edited volume will be mainly research articles however it will also include several captivating, expository articles (along with pictures) on the life and mathematical work of leading researchers in lattice path combinatorics and beyond. There will be four or five expository articles in memory of Shreeram Shankar Abhyankar and Philippe Flajolet and honoring George Andrews and Lajos Takács. There may be another brief article in memory of Professors Jagdish Narayan Srivastava and Joti Lal Jain. New research results include the kernel method developed by Flajolet and others for counting different classes of lattice paths continues to produce new results in counting lattice paths. The recent investigation of Fishburn numbers has led to interesting counting interpretations and a family of fascinating congruences. Formulas for new methods to obtain the number of Fq-rational points of Schubert varieties in Grassmannians continues to have research interest and will be presented here. Topics to be included are far reaching and will include lattice path enumeration, tilings, bijections between paths and other combinatoric structures, non-intersecting lattice paths, varieties, Young tableaux, partitions, enumerative combinatorics, discrete distributions, applications to queueing theory and other continuous time models, graph theory and applications. Many leading mathematicians who spoke at the conference from which this volume derives, are expected to send contributions including. This volume also presents the stimulating ideas of some exciting newcomers to the Lattice Path Combinatorics Conference series; “The 8th Conference on Lattice Path Combinatorics and Applications” provided opportunities for new collaborations; some of the products of these collaborations will also appear in this book. This book will have interest for researchers in lattice path combinatorics and enumerative combinatorics. This will include subsets of researchers in mathematics, statistics, operations research and computer science. The applications of the material covered in this edited volume extends beyond the primary audience to scholars interested queuing theory, graph theory, tiling, partitions, distributions, etc. An attractive bonus within our book is the collection of special articles describing the top recent researchers in this area of study and documenting the interesting history of who, when and how these beautiful combinatorial results were originally discovered.

Book excerpt: Artificial neural networks are nonlinear mapping systems whose structure is loosely based on principles observed in the nervous systems of humans and animals. The basic idea is that massive systems of simple units linked together in appropriate ways can generate many complex and interesting behaviors. This book focuses on the subset of feedforward artificial neural networks called multilayer perceptrons (MLP). These are the mostly widely used neural networks, with applications as diverse as finance (forecasting), manufacturing (process control), and science (speech and image recognition). This book presents an extensive and practical overview of almost every aspect of MLP methodology, progressing from an initial discussion of what MLPs are and how they might be used to an in-depth examination of technical factors affecting performance. The book can be used as a tool kit by readers interested in applying networks to specific problems, yet it also presents theory and references outlining the last ten years of MLP research.
