Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Carleys earliest memories of Sharon Mountain were of Albert Metz, whose philanthropic ideas gave many young people from all over the world, their musical start. The book describes the building of Fiddlestyx, Mr. Metzs summer music school complete with stage, practice cabins, and farm to provide the guests with food. His next memories were of Bob Metz, Mr. Metzs nephew, a role model for a young boy growing up on a farm who provided him with a positive attitude, comfort, care, and devotion following a tragic accident. Other powerful memories were of his father, a former farmer on Sharon Mountain and a First Selectman of the Town of Sharon, and of his grandfather, a builder, carpenter, and cabinet maker in Sharon. Throughout the book there are stories about things few people know about. Who ever heard of a cowpound on Sharon Mountain, or knew about the reason for the Town Poor Farm? Who knew the town of Sharon had a 3rd District one room school house located on Sharon Mountain? Who has ever heard of swimming pools for pigs? The author writes about simple things of the time such as the three different types of haymaking that dont exist today; about raising calves, working with horses for plowing fields, bringing milk to the milk stands, feeding twenty-two cats at once and about raising a bull calf for a short while before realizing it was a heifer calf, who went on to become the best milker in the herd. Funny things happened in those seventeen years; such things as a black snake he wrapped in a typewriter and a dead woodchuck he hid under the front seat of a friends old pickup truck, a full fledged manure fight he had with his brother, and the throwing of the baby sitters shoes out in the snow. The memories are fun, joyful and historical. This is an account of personal relationships and their effect on the history of the area.

Book excerpt: All his life, Gabe Riley has heard about sightings of ghosts and swamp monsters at Blood Red Pond, but he knows the green, scaly creature that attacks Ray McPherson’s old Buick one night isn’t real. It’s just crazy Rosasharn, getting carried away with his leading role in the horror movie Gabe and his friend Bo are making for their Gifted and Talented project. But it’s not so easy to explain some of the other curious things that start happening in Gabe’s neighborhood. Why is his father more melancholy than usual? What secret is his younger brother, Ethan, hiding from him? Why are food and clothes disappearing from their home? And who or what is behind the strange lights in old Mr. Lindstrom’s supposedly empty farmhouse? Gabe is determined to find the answers to these questions. But Gabe discovers there are far deeper questions involved, and he will have to confront more than ghosts before he understands the significance of the mysterious events. With his trademark humor and flawless ear for the language and concerns of young adults, Daniel Hayes has created an unforgettable cast of characters in a story that is part comedy, part mystery, and part a thought-provoking exploration of friendship, family relationships, love, and death.

Book excerpt: This memoir is a light-hearted social history of life in Story County during the 1940s. The decade of the 40s witnessed the death of small, family farms and the birth of agribusiness, the end of the Industrial Age and the beginning of the Computer Age, and the first faltering steps of television. It was a time of great trauma, yet for a boy growing up on farms near Roland, Iowa, the decade was filled with tranquillity and fun. Growing Up in the 40s reveals a decade with one foot firmly planted in rural small-town America and the other poised to step into the urban atomic age. It was a time when family values seemed as permanent as the great Iowa barns - a time that is now as remote as Scarlet O'Hara's antebellum South.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like The Rings Of a Tree tells a life story of a boy who grew to manhood during a turbulent time in American history. The story begins in rural South Dakota during the drought and depression years of the 1930''s. World War II involved family members in that conflict and changedAmerican life forever. The day by daywork on Midwestern farms of that era is described by someone who has worked with horses, harvested grain, picked corn by hand, made hay and survived winter blizzards. Military service by a draftee caughtup in the Korean War is related. The author takes us to life in tents, death and destruction, and the searing experience of seeing homeless, freezing and starving children. Those events resulted in a life changing experience. An encounter with institutionalized racism is noted,as the author and his fiance find they cannot be married in South Dakota, which like many states at that time, forbade interracial marriages. They were married in a neighboring state, because the author''s bride was an American citizen of Chinese ancestry. Several chapters describe theregion and people in Northeast Montana where the author worked for theMontana Agricultural Extension Service on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation, and how a Lakota baby girl became their first child. This Life story ofaccumulated experiences, Like Rings Of A Tree, depict some aspects of American history through the memoir of one ordinary person.

"—Kirkus Reviews, starred review Two outcast best friends are desperate to survive senior year and break away from their dying factory town in Stacia Tolman's The Spaces Between Us, an unforgettable YA debut. Serena Velasco and her best (and only) friend, Melody Grimshaw, are dying to get out of Colchis. To make things more interesting Serena fixates on communism, eager to get a rise out of their conservative small town. Her Western Civ teacher catches on and challenges her with an independent study of class and upward mobility—what creates the spaces between us. Meanwhile, Grimshaw takes on a mission of her own: to make it onto the cheerleading squad, find a job, and escape the weight of her family’s hopeless reputation. But sometimes the biggest obstacles are the ones you don’t see coming; Grimshaw’s quest for success becomes a fight for survival, and Serena’s independent study gets a little too real. With the future of their friendship and their lives on the line, the stakes have never been so high. Christy Ottaviano Books
