Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marc Dollinger charts the transformation of American Jewish political culture from the Cold War liberal consensus of the early postwar years to the rise and influence of Black Power-inspired ethnic nationalism. He shows how, in a period best known for the rise of black antisemitism and the breakdown of the black-Jewish alliance, black nationalists enabled Jewish activists to devise a new Judeo-centered political agenda - including the emancipation of Soviet Jews, the rise of Jewish day schools, the revitalization of worship services with gender-inclusive liturgy, and the birth of a new form of American Zionism. Undermining widely held beliefs about the black-Jewish alliance, Dollinger describes a new political consensus, based on identity politics, that drew blacks and Jews together and altered the course of American liberalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reawaken, you awoken wokesters and anti-leftist xenophobes, and get your new bible. The Five Books of Van Gross’s focuses hearkens back to the “Middle Aughts” which is the period that included launching weather crusades, being a "birther" or talking nonsense at Townhall Meetings about "healthcare" (which is really medical care plus a gym membership, glasses and teeth cleaning); here was the mid-Decade of the Zeroes or the zeros, or zorro, the fox so cunning and free, that epoch from 2003-2007, in that Aughts Decade, that Would've, Could've, Should've Oughts Decade, or as some have called it, That Aughtistic Period (or at least an ADD case) demanding an explanation, couched in brain/mind disturbances via satirical essays. This five-volume set containing nearly 500 humor essays opens with They Shoot Lesbians Don’t They? covering most of 2004, followed by Deep Tricksters-From the Felt Man to the Veep Man-November 2004 to June 2005, the executive branch hunting related extravaganza Duck, It's Dick.. Not me Dick, the Duck, June 2005- March 2006 and is followed by Van Gross Misconduct February 2006 to August 2006 and finally Van Maniac September 2006- March 2007. The urgency for this historic volume draws from where we were in the lead up to where we are. Has political and cultural satire dwindled over the century’s first two decades plus? Hardly. And supporting works (essays and poetry) by Van Gross, MD dating back to the Bill Clinton Style impeachment period and post- Five Books works in pre-print that include the pre-teens to mid teen years constituting the sacred Obama period of carefully manufactured total boredom followed by the culminating late teen epoch of Donald Trump which featured our polarization insanity half decade 2016-2020 highlighted by Impeachments Gone Wild. If the country is not formally institutionalized in padded rooms by 2021, the roaring or throat clearing Jabiden ‘20’s should offer opportunities for millions to hop, skip and jump over to their local bookstore or online outlet for Five Books to buttress the smirk packed absurdity that has become the rule in the dawn of this third millennium since Christ sashayed over hills, dales and water staying vigilant for some upcoming Van Gross, MD masterpiece called the Jabiden Chronicles- Crash and Burn by ’29 or Bust, Seems Like Old Times

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the social atti-tudes that distinguish today's youth from their predecessors, identifies the sources of these attitudes in the social experiences of today's youth, and analyzes the stereotype implied in the term "Anti-American Generation." These essays show clearly that the issue between the dissenting, primarily middle-class youth and their elders and most of the working class (regardless of age) is a difference of opinion not about Americanism but about moral behavior and the scope of moral judgment. What distinguishes the generations is not so much their feelings about their country, as' their feelings about what people should do about their feelings and the role feelings should have in the conduct of one's life. The at-titudes of the young are largely in conflict with an older cultural tra-dition that promotes the subordi-nation of impulse and personal conviction to rational control for the sake of common purposes and future acceptability and effective-ness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As one of the people who defined punk’s protest art in the 1970s and 1980s, Gee Vaucher (b. 1945) deserves to be much better-known. She produced confrontational album covers for the legendary anarchist band Crass and later went on to do the same for Northern indie legends the Charlatans, among others. More recently, her work was recognised the day after Donald Trump's 2016 election victory, when the front page of the Daily Mirror ran her 1989 painting Oh America, which shows the Statue of Liberty, head in hands. This is the first book to critically assess an extensive range of Vaucher’s work. It examines her unique position connecting avant-garde art movements, counterculture, punk and even contemporary street art. While Vaucher rejects all ‘isms’, her work offers a unique take on the history of feminist art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Out of Oakland offers a wonderful case study in the possibilities and limitations of transnational organizing. ― Diplomatic History In Out of Oakland, Sean L. Malloy explores the evolving internationalism of the Black Panther Party (BPP); the continuing exile of former members, including Assata Shakur, in Cuba is testament to the lasting nature of the international bonds that were forged during the party's heyday. Founded in Oakland, California, in October 1966 by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale, the BPP began with no more than a dozen members. Focused on local issues, most notably police brutality, the Panthers patrolled their West Oakland neighborhood armed with shotguns and law books. Within a few years, the BPP had expanded its operations into a global confrontation with what Minister of Information Eldridge Cleaver dubbed "the international pig power structure." Malloy traces the shifting intersections between the black freedom struggle in the United States, Third World anticolonialism, and the Cold War. By the early 1970s, the Panthers had chapters across the United States as well as an international section headquartered in Algeria and support groups and emulators as far afield as England, India, New Zealand, Israel, and Sweden. The international section served as an official embassy for the BPP and a beacon for American revolutionaries abroad, attracting figures ranging from Black Power skyjackers to fugitive LSD guru Timothy Leary. Engaging directly with the expanding Cold War, BPP representatives cultivated alliances with the governments of Cuba, North Korea, China, North Vietnam, and the People's Republic of the Congo as well as European and Japanese militant groups and the Palestinian Liberation Organization. In an epilogue, Malloy directly links the legacy of the BPP to contemporary questions raised by the Black Lives Matter movement.

Book excerpt: Hate Prejudice and Racism provides a comprehensive overview of the problems created by prejudiced attitudes, racist beliefs, and acts of discrimination, from the casual racial or ethnic joke to the unrestrained violence of a lynch mob. It addresses such topics as the nature of ethnicity, stereotyping, aggression, and hate groups and individuals who promote ethnic and racial hatred. Kleg's discussion of ethnicity and ethnic groups challenges us to reexamine the meaning of a multicultural society. He traces the history of race as a scientific concept and its use as a social concept designed to stigmatize and subordinate members of minority racial and ethnic groups. Chapters on prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination scapegoating provide a foundation for the chapter on hate groups and haters, which includes in-depth descriptions of beliefs and activities of white-supremacist groups and individuals who promote racism and anti-Semitism. Finally, Kleg outlines implications of hate prejudice and racism for educators and all cultural workers, outlining suggestions on how to approach and study this important and controversial topic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They called themselves the Motherfuckers; others called them a "street gang with an analysis." Osha Neumann's thoughtful, funny, and honest account of his part in ’60s counterculture is also an unflinching look at what all that rebellion of the past means today. The fast moving story follows the establishment of the Motherfuckers, who influenced the Yippies and members of SDS; makes vivid the art, music, and politics of the era; and reveals the colorful, often deeply strange, personalities that gave the movement its momentum. Abbie Hoffman said the Motherfuckers were "the middle-class nightmare . . . an antimedia media phenomenon simply because their name could not be printed." In the few years of its existence the group forced its way into the Pentagon during a war protest, helped occupy one of the buildings in the Columbia University takeover, and cut the fences at Woodstock to allow thousands in for free, among many other feats of radical derring-do. Progressing from a fractured family of intellectuals to rebellion in the streets of New York and on to communes in California, Newmann shows us a view of a life led in rebellion, anger, and eventually a tentative peace.
